The act of toggling Vorpal Spikes is not a spellCAST. Attacking with Vorpal Spikes active doesn't count as a spellcast. But if you are hit by Vorpal Spikes, the damage is labeled spell damage.
Rylai's doesn't slow on spellcast, it slows if an enemy takes spell damage:
UNIQUE: Your spell damage will slow the target's movement speed by 35% for 1.5 seconds

Similarly, spell vamp works off spell damage. That's a different concept than spell cast.

As a result, Singed's slow shouldn't apply the Rylai's slow. Confirm/Deny?

There was a patch where they explicitly stated that Vorpal now counts as spell damage, btw.

why isn't grog soaked blade spell damage? toxic shot? is it the toggle? oh but wait, relentless assault is spell damage, and it doesn't toggle. zzz, I dunno, I just think it's stupid that there isn't a clear line in the sand on abilities that add damage via on-hit effects. I guess I never had a problem with despair/poison trail because they're not adding on-hit effects and instead doing their own damage, they feel more like a spell to me than an attack enhancer. I just think it's dumb that there are rules that apply to all magic damage that applies to on-hit effects (that this is not "spell damage") EXCEPT for vorpal spikes and relentless assault.

Off topic question (off the topic of tiamats and spell vamp, since this is the general thread =D): What's your guys' opinion of hexdrinker? I've been getting it a lot lately on noct and jarvan in the jungle if the other team has a really strong/fed mid ap carry, and I'm liking the shield since those two characters tend to be right in the midst of all the damage going down in teamfights.

However, would it just be more effective to get a negatron and a faster big offensive item (ghostblade)?

I get it if I need MR but I don't want to let up on AD, otherwise as an MR item it's pretty bad.

Edit:
It's significantly cheaper than getting a Nega + something else, obviously. Again think of it as like a 2k gold item (relatively cheap) that gives you AD first, and a little bit of bonus MR.

1) On-hit procs are avoided if the target dodges or the attacker is blinded (though many on-hit spells get around this by being un-dodgeable). Vorpal still goes in either case, even though the autoattack damage doesn't go through.
2) On-hit procs apply simultaneously to the attack. If you play as Cho'gath, you'll notice a pretty clear delay AFTER your autoattack when the spines are fired.

I lane Pantheon vs. AP carries a lot nowadays and I STILL don't get hexdrinker. I just think it's a bad item. I'd literally always rather have Wit's End or Banshee's or FoN or QSS.
