Don't do this, it was supposed to be a "recommend-free-software-thread" not "list-everything-that-you-use".
At least give some proper descriptions as to why we should use what. I don't wanna be mean but come on, WinRar isn't even freeware.

Also how is SuSE 11 or Kubuntu 8.1 or Ubuntu 8.1 not user firendly enough? No drivers to install, no antivirus needed, comes with tons of software preinstalled, easy codec installation for all the players, all the programs have intuitive GUIs... Just fucking click and go...

I've tried GIMP but I cant get use to it, I have the same problem with moving from PS6 to CS4. But basically no one uses GIMP for pre-press or design of some sort. The old pro's dont have time to experiment with new software

The thing is that X.Org and KDE can run on any unux-derived distribution, so there is completely no need to ever design any window-based OS GUI because there's already one that is open-source. The best thing you can do is try to improve it, but honestly, it's good enough to satisfy all the user-friendliness needed, it's well-proved by KDE 4 which doesn't provide anything fundamentally new other than instability.

Great thread, went straight for my bookmark.
Although after testing all of the browser I've sticked to Chrome because it's way faster than Opera. Maybe it's just a personal choice, but I feel it's the best free choice.

Orbit If you're using firefox, you can download flv videos en mass from youtube with a very quick download speed too. I don't know about HD and HQ vods though.

comodo firewall
the freeware version combined with avast (also free) is the best protection u can get. it's like trojan+durex at the same time.

93MB thread bookmarked.
And yeah, utorrent should be in there but indirectly contradicts the OP's purpose. Also, another vote to SCiTe and Foxit Reader.

I'll give you a moment to collect yourselves after this shocking news... Yeah, it redirects you to thepiratebay.org. Don't be *quite* so paranoid.
Just in case dude, just in case, but the point remains, alot of people DONT like losing money to these Torrents, therefore invalid links are Dangerous. Lucky this one redirects to the REAL dns.
Im jus lookin out for u guys, trying 2 inform of a potential risk for the members. It definitly wouldnt be the first time ernu's come out with something stupid so it was worth saying, just incase

Sweet links, thanks. GIMP runs on OSX, correct?

That was a really nice post in your vulgar runon way.

erm.....dude you often say: program A is better than program B because i like it more. Remember ur opinion is just an opinion and not a fact.
I'm not saying all ur replacement programs are wrong but please show some facts, rather than just say "its better"
for example the opera case and xvidcap + camstudio.
kind of unrelated, but i just want to leave that here: Vista is great

Opera doesn't have the level of Add-Ons and community support Firefox has. If you doubt me, check out the Opera Widgits Page and then check out the Firefox Add-Ons Page. As you can see, there is a huge difference in content. You may be crying that "Add-Ons are useless" and that they "just slow things down" but items like 'Adblock Plus' and 'Customize Google' help you out enough to more than cover up for the little bit of speed boost that Opera provides. Besides, there are ways to improve Firefox speed as well (about:config has a lot of features people don't even know about).
If you use Firefox without Add-Ons, you're a chum and should go with Opera. If you use Opera knowing about Firefox's ridiculous number of Add-Ons, you're a punk and should get your head checked.
