Given that whole “the best way to cure a gangrene bullet wound is with a bone saw” methodology espoused by Civil War doctors, I’d say Mr. Sherman was on to something. Trying to play any sort of RTS game on a console gives credence to the General’s brash claim. Playing RTS’s with a controller gets me in touch with my inner Civil War amputee, mostly because the clunky controls make me feel like I’m missing a hand.

Nothing many of us have not experience already but nicely written - still it raises the question, will we ever see a decent interphase (controller) for RTS from a console? As consoles acquire more and more PC functions, and PCs get smaller it will probably end up happening.

Just design a console with mouse and keyboard support. But then you'd need a chair and a table to use them... and you need to place the TV on the table to see shit...

I hate console controllers, the inaccuracy of them is outrageous imo.

I don't think it really counts as a console if you have a keyboard and mouse for it really.

I agree. Totally.

Sure, for an RTS console controller you could have buttons to switch your mouse to minimap, hold a button down to drag, another joystick to move the cursor, hotkey buttons, etc..........
BUT THEN IT'D BE THE SAME AS THE KEYBOARD. And obviously, no keyboard shortcuts. Imagine clicking the unit portrait with your JOYSTICK every time you want to build something. People would have to spend massive amounts of time simply practicing clicking on units then reverting back.

No one would play a RTS on a console so we don't need controllers.
PC games ftw.
No dough, no go. And no mercy.

POint taken, you cant. so dont say that you can.

I could never imagine playing a competitive RTS or FPS or MMORPG on a console And those are basically the only games I play so... By the time the consoles have gained all the features that I want my gaming station to have they will already have become computers so I don't see the point in consoles at all ._. They were fun back in the days of NES/SNES.

Hahaha my brother and I had a conversation with a guy some time ago. He said something kinda similar to this (he was a war3 fan, btw).

We made a prediction that eventually all RTS would have such advanced AI that simply by pushing a button, all your workers would do a perfect split at the beginning and build more workers!
Then you push another button for a build you want, say mutalisks. You can just watch as your hatcheries get some mutas.
After that, you press another button. All your mutas stack up, and do some GOSU JULY micro against the opponent. Like, flawlessly.
(we weren't under the influence)

Me and my brother thought it would totally degrade RTS and eliminate skill differentiation completely. The war3 fan said, "No, that will only cause RTS games to get more intense and exciting.....BUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY."
No dough, no go. And no mercy.

^ sounds like starcraft 2. anyways.
I can only imagine playing an FPS/TPS on a console only because I have although going from mouse to controller is mad annoying. BUt i really can't see playing a RTS on the console...i guess we'll have to see how Halo Wars does.

I can't imagine RTS on a console :O, too much mouse dragging and selecting, too many hotkeys, on top of a lack of controller accuracy and speed.

The accuracy required in RTS and FPS is dramatically different.
For FPS, you are aiming for one small matrix, given the head.
The accuracy you need is to gauge how fast to press the joystick and in the correct direction.

In RTS, you have to drag boxes, click on masses of, albeit larger, matrixes, though very many smaller ones, not to mention move them in the right places.

Imagine dodging lurker spines on a XBox 360.

lol, exactly, that is the trend blizz is going down. eventually just type mutas and it'll do a perfect build order. i have no idea why they want to eliminate skill in their games. it's as if you are playing a chess computer game, and instead of moving the individual pieces you typed in 'play' and watched your pieces get moved like a grandmaster.
