PURGE 2008!
Short Version: - Don't post like an idiot, - Don't insult people, - Don't judge people based on post count, - Read over all your words before you hit post,
and you wont get banned.
Long Version:
We here at teamliquid are sensing some undesirable trends lately, and we are about to put a stop to it.
The average posting quality is going down, people are becoming to comfortable with bad manner, and the amount of quality, effort-laden threads is drying up.
Remember this analogy:
Imagine your friend invites you to somebody's house for dinner. You would probably be polite right? Then, once you got to know people you relax a little bit. TeamLiquid is just like that. If you are new, show respect, be polite, and have something to contribute. There are many people here who have been visiting this house for a long time. Respect that too.
People who break these rules are removed from the site, much like an unruly house guest.
There is a second part. Some people stay in the house for a long time because it is too much of a pain in the ass to ask them to leave. Well, you may now be asked to leave.
Think before you post. We have purged periodically in the past, this is merely an extension of that.
Exhibit A: LetMeBeWithYou
stalker shit.
Sup. Called it.
Go watch it in theater, shithead
You're a faggot and you use 4chan meme.
No, you're a fucking idiot.
etc. etc. etc.

Bonus points for the purge icon.

As a person with a very low post compared to rest of the TL community (even though I've been visiting the site for years, and only just registered)...
I'd like to say thank you.

I totally remember last year's purge. FOR TEAMLIQUID!

O________O
Time to read my posts.
|
Uh Oh, time to keep a low profile. Hopefully this'll blow over soon.
|
Thanks for the warning.
|
Will this apply to haji? :p
|
So is this like a mass banning? *trembles in corner*
|
THis is so applying to me.
Does this apply to blogs too?. Because if not..
|
Good news. I always hated seeing every other thread with someone replying with just "QFT" to raise post counts.

thank god, ive been noticing the bm and ass comments everywhere. felt like it was becoming some elitist zone, where the dumbasses ruled. very good news
|
Yeah I remember getting banned in the last purge. But now I'm cool.
Sup.

Aw crap, I'm pretty sure I've broken the first rule a few times, but I've followed everything else very well imo so I hope I'm safe
...
|
I have been visiting the site for years and I, too, have noticed the quality of threads and posts has diminished over time. I dont post often, but I do enjoy reading what everyone else has to say, unless its some stupid one liner or something of that nature. Kudos for taking action, teamliquid

Quality posting usually comes from the religious or science related threads lol

I'm pretty sure the people that could be affected by this already know who they are. It's just a matter of whether or not they're gonna actually post better heh.

finallllllly. i hate how people give other people shit too, and it pisses me off.

For many posters this will change nothing, I'm sure. But if it causes the other group to make better posts, then I'm happy to support this new purge.

I was wondering what was going on when I saw the thread title in General then refreshed only to see it disappear.
So admins, how big do you want the bribes to be. I'm scared now
Does this purge count on the overt use of vulgar language.

Or there will be considerably less posts. If you go back to the oldest news posts, everyone who posted is now a moderator and there were 2 comment newspost threads.

LOL that made me laugh pretty hard. Hmmm... to my knowledge doesn't purge just slow a person up a bit?
"Removes all buffs from a target unit, and slows its movement speed by a factor of 5. Purged units will slowly regain their movement speed over 15 seconds. Deals 400 damage to summoned units. Purge does not slow friendly units when used on them and causes units to stop for a brief moment when first cast."
So those caught in this purge lose their cool icons (if they have any) and have their teamliquid slowed for 15 seconds? Or can this apply to the mafia game too? If you get purged its like getting sabotaged/400 damage to dead posters.
|
If the problem you're trying to solve is that a few insightful posts are buried in heaps of garbage, maybe it makes more sense to have some sort of rating/digg system for each post.
Banning lots of people will be pretty effective, but it's not an optimal solution because it fails to account for the fact that some mostly bad posters can have good posts, and some mostly good posters can have bad posts.
|
damnnnnnnnnnn
I've been posting a bit immature too lately (sometimes), but I guess I should be careful now, so I don't get purged ^^
|
After reading the op, i think it is mostly bm posts that make the mods angry.
But are one liners bad ?
I try to make longer posts in strategy section or in " serious " threads, but a lot of my posts in blogs, or stupid topics are one liners .

Well they gave examples in the OP. My interpretation is that one-liners are something they want less of. But if you're actually contributing with your one-liner, I'm sure you'll be fine. Maybe you could expand and try to get at least say 3 sentences. If your one-liner is a superfluous joke, it better be a good one.
BTW, do blogs count in this?
|
Well now theres an upside to me spending the next month learning how to read and write chinese with no internet connection.... now I dont need to ask for a temp ban
|
How would you judge someone like Dronebabo then, he has to be the worst poster here
Or lets say SayaSP, who almost excusively posts a sentence tops and never says anything of importance except for his reaver song?
Oh man, and Haji?
I'm not accusing here, just being honest
You haaaave to be consistant with this; like you said Manifesto it should be less about post count and more about quality posting and should apply to everyone, no?

I expect new posters to respond to a thread in the way the thread has been going. That means if the there's a lot of long timer posters making one sentence non-sequiturs that a new poster would try to do the same. I have to agree that you can't demand a different set of standards from new posters. After all, there really just trying to fit it.
I'm not trying to justify bad posting, just that the quality of new posters posting is going to roughly mirror that of the average, and if a lot of old-timers are posting one liners, that's what to expect

Your just trying to start a fight, Out of all the crappy posters you could've named (not that his choices are crappy), you picked some high-profile posters who clearly will have the admins on their side. You should stop before this escalates into you getting banned for a moot point. Its been said many times leeway is giving to previous quality posters.

This is going to get really really dirty.
For some reason that excites me
|
The problem is less in the point itself than the manner it is raised - short one liners which look more or less as an attempt to start a fight than to (ie, me-tooism) than trying to constructively point to posters you feel are getting off too easy. Now, I do believe that the point of the TL 10 commandments has somewhat been missed by people (ie, that people who may are fundamentally not posting very 'good' material can often be acceptable if their record of posting good content has been proven justifiably before), and that's fair enough. When this is combined with the proven track record of the staff to have faith in posters of an acceptable quality (and this is only my opinion on the issue), if any one member is going to single out someone as a 'bad poster' and it's a gray area/leniency has been given, they should put together a pretty good analysis/walloftext which tries to be reasonably objective about analysis of someone's posting standards. In that manner, not only can we clearly see members who feel they have a point to make, but if any staff wish to explain their decision then they can choose to do so.
Otherwise it looks like trolling.

Dude, the people (good ones) of TL respect the "nobodies". Some of the quietest people out there also qualify as the coolest too, they aren't busy trying to prove it. You'll find that out when you get together with some people outside of the forums, it's awesome.

Also, "nobodies" who make thoughtful posts and comments are usually the ones who have been stalking the site and reading threads for ages either before they signed up, or only comment when they think that there is a point that needs to be made.
And of course, the good players don't need to make posts at all.

it is OK to post one liners as long as you have something to contribue once in awhile, do not insult people for no reason, is relatively open-minded, etc, etc, basically just not an idiot. You'll be surprised at how mods can tell who is an idiot or not based on what someone writes....

That's not really surprising at all. It's not that difficult and if someone acts like an an idiot repeatedly it's quite easy to pick up. I used to frequent the Something Awful forums a lot, but it got to the point where pretty much everyone except the people who had been around the block once or twice was an idiot. So there'd be weeks of permanent bans instead temporary bans, because people weren't even reading the rules or the stickied thread at the top of every forum. You'd think people would be more careful because they had to pay ten bucks, but no. I don't even know how much any of it helped, because I began to understand the subculture of a subforum that had the hobby of going through other forums and finding stupid stuff people would say and getting others to know about it.
At that point I started to understand the forum way too much for my own good and just stopped going, because it wasn't even worth it anymore. I don't think TL is nearly bad as it was there, but it never hurts to be on top of things.

Yeah I'll probably get banned for this but whatever. That was after twenty million other people each asked twenty million times whether the replays would be released and then asked for an explanation and then attempted to argue over it. And that's a lot of times to be asked which is why Mani gave you that answer. And you don't get banned for challenging tl mods. Simply ask them why they acted as they did, rather than tell them they are wrong. More often than not when you hear the whole story, instead of just looking it at from the perspective of a single thread, you'll agree with their decision. It's a question of tone.

If I remember correctly it was his first reply to the first question about this, which pissed off a lot of people who continued to ask for a reason, and it wasn't until then did they explain that it was due to sponsorship etc. Anyway, not trying to make a big deal out of it just telling it as it is.

Because his question can be answered in that post, so I suggest he read it. Why should I have to answer every question 500 times when the answer is already in the document that every new user is linked to?
In practice, this policy means a user who has 1000+ posts may be able to get away with a few minor transgressions in etiquette with just a warning. If you're at 50 posts and you try the same kind of stunt, then we may just ban you. Harsh? Yes. Unfair? Most definitely. But that's the way life is. Learn to live with it.
This also means you should think twice before calling that guy with 5000+ posts a jackass. If the guy's been with us that long, chances are YOU'RE the one being an idiot. Some battles are just not worth fighting - just move on.
And about the replays, I actually said this:
On May 11 2008 20:46 Manifesto7 wrote: Replays will not be released. It is part of our sponsorship deal. End of story.
From this thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=71174¤tpage=All
So that was a decent explanation no?
Finally this:
Yeah I'll probably get banned for this but whatever. Is the lousiest crap ever. It makes you look so weak, giving an opinion and hiding behind the martyr shield.
Thank you for wasting my time.

This site takes itself wayyy to seriously or should I say the staff do, this thread is proof. It could be worse like gosugamers.. I havent vistied that site in probably a year because unlike here where there is just some faggots everyone is a complete faggot there. You guys not to long ago banned 8882... are you fucking retarded? He contributed a lot.. yet you leave faggots like newbcontrol who is the biggest douche this site has ever seen. It doesn't make sense. Removing Rekruls modship or whatever it was definitely was a good idea but that took way to long. Sure he has some intereting stories and I probably have more in common with him than other members here but he was such a ban happy faggot it should have been way earlier.
|
Incontrol submits lots of replays thats why he is appreciated.
|
Prodigy: Would you rather they occasionally ban the wrong people, while keeping the rest of the forum clean? Or would you rather they let everyone roam free, calling people "Faggots" and telling each other to "stfu".
This is supposed to be the best StarCraft forum on the net and has more recognition from Blizzard and the pro gamers than any other website.
I applaud manifesto and the rest of the staff for doing their part, they may not always get the right guy or be the fastest but they keep it clean and that's the point.

Ahh yes, 8882 the man who spouted such gems as:
he is not polish. he has polish citizenship. I speak german, does it make me german? lol
and if someone was black and played for korean football team, would it make him korean? no you dumbass, he would still be black
some random nigger from africa got the citizenshp too and played for our football team, but he still is a random nigger and definitely not polish
hmm I think a typical korean male wakes up, eats a dog, goes to work/school, comes from work, eats a cat, plays starcraft, goes to bed I think that's why korean woman find the korean man unatractive and Rekrul said they have small jajis (how did he learn that???)
personally I believe that jews>arabs actually I dont like arabs at all
but NOONE GIVES A FUCK ABOUT THEM
and on and on and on
See you in two weeks.

I agree with this post almost 100%, but I'm going to always say TL > GG, and even trying to relate this site to that one is not fair to TL.net. That site ruins my day when I visit. TL.net brightens mine instead . And besides with TL Mafia I've been viewing more threads periodically. It seems like some of the content has changed, but I also noticed that there is always a good flow of stuff to read. I can't really complain about the users though most are cool too. Granted I just look from afar.

Prodigy is definitely not 8882. And if you're using "hi ___" as an insult, get some better insults.
About moderation and TL.net taking itself too seriously, I really do think there have been way too many bans in TL.net's history. I say if a person has a long history on a site, or is an important part of the BW community, they should only be put on probation. If they act up again, put them on probation again. If you think this would be too much work, just hire one new "stalker mod."
The strange thing is I think the moderation strategy I outlined above has been applied to me.
8882 has spammed and contributed, and been around BW and the community for a long time. I say probate him. I mean chill out guys, it's a video game forum...
...But whenever I say that I remember I'm seriously arguing about moderators taking the forums too seriously. I'm lame.
Anyways, if you're just reviewing the past month, I posted once besides this. If you're looking the last few months before that, shit posts and probations abound.
EDIT: Is that mod (manablue??) still signing his posts with
--faggot
if so, ban ban ban ban!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Not sure I understand the point of this thread. Is it just a warning that mods will get more severe for now on? Or is it an interactive thing like "name who you think deserves it and we'll check"?
Anyway, hope you guys do get more severe. TL.net mods are way too kind imho :p If I were a mod, it would be a blood bath. \o/

Prodigy you're a complete fool. "It could be worse, like gosugamers." Exactly. thats why those morons need to be banned. Rekrul losing his modship was the first thing wrong that happened, making something like this necessary. This site is frequented by many awesome people exactly because they take is seriously, and you say it like its a bad thing. Tlnet(mods) shouldn't need a reason to ban people, and them going too lightly on people that should have been banned is the only reason this is necessary, because they need to catch up on the garbage around here and feel a need to let everyone know why.
8882 was a troll from the start. The fact that he lasted as long as he did is a credit to mods' collective leniency.

I'm moderately shocked at how many stupid ban worthy posts there have been in this thread.
I'm also somewhat puzzled by this purge in general. The OP implied that posters who don't contribute will be banned, while subsequent posts seem to indicate that it is douchebag posters who will be banned.
Douches can be helpful posters and non-douches can be total time wasters.
Hopefully I'm both non- assholic and occationally helpful- I'm just wondering for clarification.

QUICK! Jump on the bandwagon to insult Youtube commentators because its okay to insult them as the majority of the mods dislike them (or give the impression at the very least). funkie, you're better than that and jwd has a point.
