For me - I'm not sure. I don't think that I'm a happy person at all, really, just someone who goes through the motions of living life as I should. Each day is just.. another day until I die. Maybe I can get some ideas from you guys on how to make these days bearable until I do.
What makes you happy?

i really love getting high at the end of a day. and hugging gf, that's also soothing and relaxing. both in combination is ideal. watching a great movie makes me feel wonderful. (really if you like watching movies you should really make an effort to watch good ones. I never really realized until pretty recently how big the difference is.. bad / average movies are just a timefiller. great movies don't always make you feel great, but they always make you feel something, and just witnessing greatness / something capable of emotionally affecting me sorta fills me with awe. ) hanging out with friends whom enjoy my company and whose company I enjoy is also a terrific activity, there's a huge difference between just hanging out with people and hanging out with friends though. this point is pretty essential to be consistently happy I think. it's probably possible to be consistently content without this, but I'm not sure about consistently happy. eating a great meal makes me happy. however, this has to be a great meal; and this is something which you cannot derive pleasure out of too often, or it stops being as pleasant. the whole theory of diminishing returns might not apply to anything else as strongly as it applies to food. eat good food as often as possible, eat great food very occasionally. (and while I am not particulary wealthy, I really feel that spending $200 on a great meal for one person, if it is something you do twice a year at the most, is one of the best ways one can spend money. ) doing that too often makes you less capable of enjoying all kinds of food though and you'd essentially end up spending way more money on a comparable experience. the first time you eat truly great food however, you will be blown away. great music makes me happy. but honestly, only in combination with being high. otherwise music is pleasant, but I have to admit I am never really touched or moved by music while sober. if im drunk i might want to dance, which is fun and makes me happy, but it's not the same. this is pretty impossible to plan ahead of time because sometimes the combination of your high and the music creates an absolutely wonderful feeling in every inch of your body. the last episode of futurama makes me happy, if nothing else, simply because it shows the potential of man. if we can create anything this good, we can do anything else. watching a great sports event makes me happy. for this to truly truly happen, there are a couple factors that need to apply : whomever I am cheering for must be the underdog, and they must win. when rosenborg beat valencia 2-0 in the champions league just recently, that was one of the happiest occasions of my recent memory. I watched it by myself in a pub with 100 other strangers and that was probably the most joy-packed place in trondheim that day. walking home I would randomly yell YESS and clap my hands when I walked past people whom appeared to have been watching the same game. when norway beat brazil 2-1 in the worldcup, the same thing applied. when rosenborg won the norwegian league for the 12th year in a row, nobody really cared. this only makes me truly happy if it's not expected, otherwise it's more like it makes me content. I also become happy those few days I accomplish something. practicing the law of diminishing returns, I try to make this happen rarely. right now im writing some term paper in history and I will feel very happy once I am done with it. it's pretty good right now too though, if nothing else, simply through having spent the last 10 minutes thinking about what makes me happy. =]

To all of people saying starcraft, girls, food... you dont know shit. Those are things that can perhaps make you feel good, but happy? and me? making people feel good about themselves makes me happy. Seeing people smile(especially the ones who were sad) makes me happy.

I don't think that I'm a happy person at all, really, just someone who goes through the motions of living life as I should. Each day is just.. another day until I die. That's certainly not uncommon. I think it's important not to dwell on where you are right now and instead try and see where you want to be in a few years. Then you can do a little something each day or whenever to help move yourself towards that goal. Even if it's only self-dillusion, the idea of progressing and growing somehow as a person can be enough of a daily reward to keep you on the up and up.

AKA, I've always felt this way, I just go through the motions of doing what is expected of me. I'm sure the pressures of life and school may be contributing, but.. I've spent the last.. 10 years feeling like this? (somewhere since early high school...)

I know what makes me feel 'good', but those feelings are fleeting. Everything that I do seems ephemeral and I always wind up coming back to this feeling as though I'm stuck. Well, obviously there has to be some kind of light at the end of the tunnel. If you're coming back to the feeling that you're stuck, then maybe you aren't really progressing towards anything you can imagine happening. Maybe someone has the plan to go live in Europe for a year. So they spend the next year or two in their dead-end job in the States - but they pick a place they want to go, they read up on it and the culture, they take some courses and learn the language, they figure out what kind of work they want to do when they get there and do some training. Yeah, they're still 'stuck' at the moment, but they are consciously putting effort into things each day which will help them get to some place in their life they want to be. I dunno, just an example. But I'm just kind of talking out of my ass since I don't know you at all and every situation is somewhat unique, isn't it? I guess it just sounded somewhat familiar because I often feel the same way - stuck, heading towards nothing, and ultimately not really doing anything about it. I touched on this in my first ever blog and have been working on fixing it ever since. But these are personal questions you aren't likely to find solutions for on a StarCraft forum. I like making other people 'happy' because I don't ever want them to feel how I do. But as even in helping others, I don't do it for me because it just doesn't really gimme that "ahhh, I've done good" feeling, rather it's like.. "oh well, there's another person." Bah, I dunno. Sorry to get all emo - maybe I've been talking to Jamie too much. ![]() Don't trust the Red Coats. Edit: Anyways, there's no build order for life - everyone is different. Anyone who tells you there is a 10 step plan for fixing your state of mind is probably trying to sell some shoddy, poorly written book of his. I think it's just a matter of figuring out what you want in life and setting in motion some kind of plan to maybe get there. Some people want wealth - so maybe they should go to school and work as a stock broker. Some people are hedonists and really need nothing but beer and women. Me, I realized that what I need is complete personal freedom to be happy - not easy to achieve in today's world but worth a try regardless.

Working out doesn't really make me that happy because I don't enjoy it that much. I just do it because I have to do something for my body I guess. Mountainbiking makes me happy though. Might sounds really cliché and tacky, but christmas/new years eve is something that makes me really happy too. Just eating great food, having this great atmosphere in the house just makes me feel happy. Also when I'm free of any pressure from school, like right now. I just had the presentation of my project on school so we're at the brink of a new project (the last one because after this one I'm due for my 'exam-project'). Just the feeling that you don't have school pressuring you because you don't have a lot of time left and stuff makes me happy. Just knowing you don't have much to do and I love teh free time. Can't think of much else right now.

Plus almost everything in this thread that people have mentioned is just fleeting happiness and feeling good. Obviously I like friends, girls, sex, food, beer, etc. but all of those things are just fleeting happiness. I guess being with a girl I really like is probably the closest I've come to any happiness. That never lasts too long though, at least it hasn't for me. And I like my friends and everything and I wouldn't want to lose them but they don't really give me any 'happiness'. I'd say some of the only things mentioned here that are not (hopefully) just fleeting happiness is a spouse and family and a job you love. Personally I can't really think of any jobs that would actually make me "happy". When I accomplish something like a good test grade that's only fleeting happiness as well, for like maybe 5 minutes. I do of course enjoy the little things and that's what keeps me going. Are you saying Susie that you don't even enjoy all the little things like a good meal, beer, friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, computer games, etc.? Aren't those the things that get you through life at the end of the day? Even if you aren't actually happy you can still enjoy stuff for fleeting moments. If you get to the point where that fleeting happiness isn't enough then that's when it starts to suck; I've definitely been there as well multiple times. So anyway, maybe my little story here can make you feel better about yourself, or at least not alone.

![]() Ok it doesn't make me HAPPY, but it contributes a tiny bit to it by being funny. I guess happiness comes from many small things... and you just notice the one thing pushing you the final way into it. I like to feed a lot on attention. Hmm. Of course, it's gotta be attention I reciprocate, getting it from people I don't like/value is a hassle. An exception which is alas no more valid, is weed. I could be in an extremly depressive mood and hate the world hate myself hate everything which can be hated... And then roll up a J and take a few puffs, and just lose all the negativity. All my worries would fade, either away or into a positive "not a problem, a challenge" light. It was usually combined with some euphoria. I'd go outside and just marvel at the beauty of everything alive or seemingly alive, like wind. Birds, sunshine, you name it. It was a great feeling. One of the greatest things I've felt in my life. Edit: By the way, my old marijuana highs' effects are very unusual, haven't heard of anyone get even close to them. So, kids, don't do drugs. Drugs are bad. ![]() Since my "new" (more than a year) marijuana highs are impossible to compare with what they once were, the only recent times when I've felt that mood was when I was extremly tired, like after not having slept for over 18 hours. Maybe because all the thoughts running wild in my head would just shut down for once, and I was experiencing the peace of truly living in the moment? Maybe.

I have to continue to create and make things to look forward to so that I can deal with being so dismal all the time but even that's starting to take a toll on me. But it's nice to see that I'm not the only dissatisfied person out there.

Sorry if this has been said, but I don't feel like reading 5 pages of responses.. For me, having a goal helps avoid that feeling, I think. The key is not to let uncertainty stop you from pursuing something. If you don't know what to pursue, pick something you are maybe thinking about and just do it. It took me a few years to decide to go to grad school and get a teaching credential.. because I had to figure that out for myself. But eventually I decided "fuckit, even if I'm not sure, at least I'll try it and find out if it's what I want to do... if I decide it's not, then it's a learning experience and no harm done." I may not end up teaching for my career, but at least I'm working on it and the experience of the challenge of becoming one is fulfilling.

Maybe I can get some ideas from you guys on how to make these days bearable until I do. Have you tried setting for yourself some worthwhile, long-term goals?

If it's any comfort, I find it's a fairly common malady for students who are set to graduate to fall into a contemplative rut about their next steps. Reading more of what you wrote, I had a couple other thoughts. It seems like you might need to do something drastic to get out of your rut. Not necessarily drastic in action, but drastic in change of.. viewpoint, I guess? Like... it sounds as if you're kindof stuck being used to being a certain way, and you might need to force yourself to break out of it. All this takes, though, is just that... force of will.. Just make yourself be determined not to take the mediocrity any more, and you will have succeeded. Have some faith that you will have a great life, and make yourself believe it.. I don't think I'm making much sense, and I'm sorry. I guess I'm just saying will yourself to have some passion, even if not for anything in particular, and I think that will help you break out of your lull. Now, this may be easier to do if it is accompanied by something drastic in action as well... Such as, like I said before, I had to force myself to stop wavering and go for something. Well, part of this was that I decided to take a trip to Ireland. I said to myself "Fuckit! I'm going to go to Ireland, damnit! I don't care if I only have a plane ticket and arrive on the ground broke with nothing, I'm going to go and there's nothing that can stop me!" Everyone thought I was crazy for going without any plans or hostel reservations or anything, but I did it anyways. Now, I'm not saying this is revolutionary or anything, but what happened is that by forcing myself into a completely different experience, I was taken out of my norm, and that allowed me to make some decisions that I was too uncertain to make while I was in my comfort zone. Okay, I'm still not sure I made any sense in that, but hopefully at least I've given you something more to consider. Also, on an unrelated note:
On November 07 2007 06:30 fgsvsd wrote: Fortuities like this. ![]() ROFLOL!! Also, Ketchup and eggs are the bomb, yo. Or, a variation, omlette with salsa, is even better.
Heh, to be honest, I think that this is great advice. I've followed it several times before. Usually drastic actions on my part though, is an escape from the norm, which ultimately means that it brings me back to where I was before this drastic action. I've traveled a bit during college, I moved out to Korea after graduating the first time around. While there, I met a boy and followed him out to where ever he lived (at the time) when I got back to the States. I can BE drastic, but that doesn't necessarily, again, mean that I am happy after I do. Even though I have no money, I will on a drop of a dime, take weekend trips just to get away from everything that I had built up in my current position. The idea of taking a huge trip is wonderful, but currently, I don't have the means or the time. Maybe that's one reason I feel suffocated. But that's another matter. Now, your point on having a drastic change in will makes sense, but how does one will themselves to a different outlook? Or will themselves to having passion? Passion, for me, anyway, is something that is innate I can't just MAKE it happen. God, I really am pessimistic. /wrists.

I disagree. When you say you were happy when you qualified for Wcg, its not starcraft that made you happy. It was the achievement of a goal thats very hard to acomplish. When you just say girls, it usually means a short term shallow relationship. If you actually mean that true love makes you happy, its not the girl thats crucial here, its your relationship. A girl, starcraft or whatever is only the instrument that can help you reach happieness, just like ANY other thing in the world. Saying that Starcraft made you happy when you qualified for WCG is like saying that some airplane made you happy because at the end of the flight, the person you love very much was waiting for you at the airport.

I'm really trying to think of other things that I look forward to after work on a daily basis and its nothing really. Going out with friends to drink or whatever is depressing to me most of the time. Not the act itself but later when I think about it, its just a waste and i'm hurting my body etc. Makes me feel like I have to be drunk to have a good time aka loser.

It owns e-z. Good Korean BBQ places here in Australia - although the ones in Korea will of course shit on them. The good ones are in Strathfield or Eastwood here, in Sydney - it's a predominantly Korean place..all signs are in Korean etc. So I'm sure it's at least half-way authentic, but I want to go to Korea of course and try the real stuff.
