It's weird, since the coronvirus landed in occidental countries, we don't see as much as desinformation and instrumentalization from our media like https://www.lemonde.fr/idees/article/2020/03/02/coronavirus-a-wuhan-on-transporte-les-cadavres-dans-des-sacs-emportes-sur-des-charrettes_6031465_3232.html . Basically, from an opponent of the regime, it is saying there are a lot of trucks which are carrying corpses, informations which have been contradicted by the WHO since then.
Now in France, it's more like "we hope our wealthfare system can take the hit". The sad thing is our dear politics have gradually reduced the hospital's means (and especially the caregivers' numbers) during the last decades. There were already social conflicts in my town's hospital because the effectifs are always lower, I wonder how they can dealt with it if there is a big epidemy. Another concern I have is the migrants. They are a lot in my town (a desintualized one, one of the poorest of France) which already leads to conflict and a heavy mistreatment against them. Now, there are rumors they are spreading the coronavirus, this xenophobia is worrying me.

Good news in my state, people can get free testing without insurance thanks to a letter urging it from a local rep and not a completely ass governor, bad news, they might be jobless/homeless after a quarantine because they can't get PTO if they test positive (so most of the people around me are probably not going to be able to afford to get tested still)

FUCK! Wash your hands often and don't touch your face while you're out of the house. Eat healthy, don't drink too much and you'll likely be just fine! Don't forget to wipe your phone screen like once a day... or at least more often than most of us probably did before, which is never. Need to make sure you're not potentially getting your hands dirty right after you washed them.

China is claiming they are seeing an increase in the recovery rate and decrease in new cases, but I don't trust a single number coming out of that country. Have any other countries gotten to the point where new cases are going down?

I would expect it to be a bit before other countries get to the same point where new cases are going down.

I would love to see the Chinese data on their therapeutics! Kaletra, chloroquine, arbidol, the bunch!

Have anyone read about Mao and Sparrows? https://www.thevintagenews.com/2016/09/26/1958-mao-zedong-ordered-sparrows-killed-ate-much-grain-caused-one-worst-environmental-disasters-history/
It is an interesting historical factoid that accurately describes the kind of results the Chinese goverment can mobilize in society. WHO have made hopeful statements about corona virus because it is the first pneumonia (in the lower respiratory airway sense) virus that has been contained without vaccines using only quarantine and disease tracing.
The context would be that if China was late on the ball with tens of thousands of people already infected then surely western countries can handle the effects of a few imported cases and the infections they cause in turn.
I do not think the Chinese goverment lies about the numbers (but I could be wrong).
But I am also not sure that any western goverment today has the power to drive their population of sparrows to extinction by issuing a decree.
edit: I should say that ai think that we can and we will contain the virus since we know it can be done. We just need the right will for it first. And I also think that it will not be that bad be regardless if it is contained or not.
It is just an observation of the fucked up things Chinese goverment can achive on unimportant things versus them not telling the world the whole truth.

I think it's already failed. 80+ countries infected, and lots of them don't have excellent health systems, or the population may not comply. Either you get a good vaccine later on, either the virus dies out due to the time of year (but if it's already worldwide, there's little chance of that... Since we have 2 hemispheres.
My guess is that's it's endemic until at least a vaccine. France reported +50% cases today.

Hawaii had first confirmed case today.

In lighter news, the great toilet paper shortage of 2020 is providing some entertaining moments over here.
A truck carrying a load of TP caught fire on a motorway a couple days ago and the entire city went into mourning.
A family accidentally ordered about half a ton of it a few weeks before everyone went mad, were wondering what the hell to do with it, and are now sitting on a very respectable investment.
One of our newspapers decided to do their bit by including several additional pages conveniently marked to be torn up and deployed in emergencies.

As much as I feel China fucked up in the initial stages of the virus, I think what they have done now is pretty good. I'm actually more worried about Italy and other European countries because I don't think they are capable of enacting any strong measures to combat the spread.

Yeah I gotta admit that China's draconian policies are required for something that is this contagious and deadly. The alternative where probably double digit percentages of the population get severely sick over the next few months, and the country runs out of caregivers, medicine, etc. is not pretty. Would easily be millions dead.
There's no way to contain the virus any more in a lot of countries(Iran, Italy) without emulating China, but it isn't too late to slow it to a point where the healthcare system can handle it without collapsing.

Is there any special usage of toilet paper?

I talk to myself in public a lot more because of the mask.

I mean the main use is important enough, right? :D

I work in the entertainment industry as a stage tech and my entire next week was cancelled. Concerts, seminars, exhibits. The clients are claiming "Force majeure" so I`m losing lots of money on this damned virus. Should have been a disinfectant salesman. Yesterday I had a job at an exhibit that hosted 20k people. Hope none of them sneezed.

I never understood why people hoard toilet paper in times like this. It takes up a huge amount of space and you dont need that much to last a while. It would be one of the last things for me to worry about.

As long as you have running water you need none of it. Its just a bit more icky.
I assume sales of Bidet style toilets have skyrocketed as well if people worry about paper.
