I'm Dutch too and in international trade with both China and Italy
We're very worried for the economic ramifications. Apart of course from human suffering... but can you imagine a huge economic crisis again?
I was just starting to forget the last one that impacted our societies so much and ended not so long ago. That crisis removed so much wealth and livelihoods for everyday people... I'm saying since that crisis buying power etc decreased immensely, taxes raised significantly and so much job hopping for me. It's the common man that paid for the crisis.
I can't handle another one

One major conference that was scheduled for this weekend outside my particular wheelhouse went fully virtual at the last minute.
Ones I have abstracts submitted to are happening in May/June (Chicago/Boston) and then August (Berlin), but many typical attendants are old enough or international so I am not sure what attendance will be like if they happen at all. Maybe by that point it will be either contained or accepted as everywhere, but maybe not.
If the August one goes down it will really suck since I was hoping to use that as a way to look for jobs. Then again, if they do happen tickets and hotel rooms will probably be pretty dang cheap for once.
All danish researchers employed by our regions (so nearly all doctors) are forbidden from participating in conferences until at least March 20 with a high likelihood of extension at this point.

Apparently some swedish girl visited my fathers office last week. When she got home in sweden, she tested positive. So the whole office is closed for 10days, and my father is now locked at home taking his temp twice a day for 2 weeks. The sooner the better i guess

He probably means that he hasn't been able to leave the house to buy the bananas in question due to the circumstances.

Every time I buy bananas they ripen so fast and I end up having to eat six of them a day. And you can't even put them in the fridge to make them last longer cause it'll do the opposite.

can always keep some to make banana bread or put them in a frying pan to cook them with sugar

Belgian media reporting 133 new deaths in Italy today. That’s wild. Why suddenly so many deaths?

A friend who works at the PNW hospitals has mentioned he's received a few corona scares, but no one has actually been positive with it. He also mentions that we're not equipped to deal with a crisis if it does balloon up.

There was a documentary here on tv a while ago, about a banana producing country in africa. They did intervieuw some of the locals and you know what? None of the locals had ever seen a yellow banana. All the perfectly yellow bananas are for exports. Green banana is fine, they will ripe and turn yellow in a few days.
slightly off topic,i will leave it at that.

Cooling bananas in the fridge will not prevent them from turning brown, but it will stop them from becoming mush.

I love how over half of the posts on this page are about bananas :D Brightens the mood of the conversation a bit but yeah..
Slightly off topic

I find it strange that with so much more time to prepare for the virus, Italy and many other countries appear incapable to contain the spread. Maybe it's because I'm too used to my country's efficiency and effectiveness, maybe because I have zero grasps of the issues big countries have (Singapore is soooo small). But surely much more could have been done?

Very few countries are truly prepared to handle a disproportionate part of the country suddenly getting sick, and only some of those countries will have a very large outbreak. For reasons that aren't always under anyone's direct control, some countries are just going to get hit worse than others, and some that would do very poorly simply don't get hit too hard.
Of all the nations that have actually gotten hit, only Iran seems to be straight up failing. Everyone else just got hit and is dealing with it.

Hope everyone and their loved ones are safe - what's the group's take on how this pandemic is going to turn out? Anything y'all are doing to prepare?
My fear is that while the situation in China and South Korea give optimism, the situation in Western EU is fast deteriorating, and the situation in the USA is a fiasco. In that case, one country fucking up and letting the virus run rampant will continue to endanger the rest of the world.
If the direct deaths from this virus weren't bad enough, its indirect impact might be more devastating - triggering severe global recession and overwhelming health systems.

I don't know how to make my comment not political, but Singapore is very unique in terms of economy, respect and enforcement of the law.

To be fair, of the countries that have had a lot of cases, Iran was already the weakest one (compared to China, SK, Italy, etc.) - it's economy was already heavily weakened by sanctions, and there was political unrest and vulnerable leadership after the Solemeini affair and the downed airliner in January.
