1) Lincoln never freed the slaves and waited to make a toothless proclamation about it until after another bloody draw in order to secure his relection. 2) He could have called up slaves to revolt against their masters and reward them with the land they work, 3) he could have started military units staffed with former or current slaves promising land and citizenship in exchange for service to manage his manpower issues instead of drafting from new York.

4) The amendment never outlawed slavery it just solidified the institution in the state instead of in private hands. 5) He never gave a shit about what would happen to the slaves after they were freed and never gave truth to the order of 40 acres and a mule. 6) The way to break the south forever would be to create a class of people who were militantly against what the confederacy was about. Black militias In the south armed with the castoffs from demonilized units after the war would have solved the nation's ills.

1) It wasn't lawful for Lincoln to proclaim all slaves freed by executive order. But the Emancipation did free Confederate slaves captured by the U.S. army, so it was far from toothless.

2) With what weapons?

3) I can't really speak on this in detail, but is Lincoln really a tyrant because a certain logistical idea either didn't occur to him, or did but was deemed impractical?

4) Lincoln didn't write the Thirteenth Amendment, nor was he singularly responsible for passing it. But it did result in thousands of people being liberated from chattel slavery, so it was a net good even if the bit about "except as a punishment for crime" is unfortunate.

5) He certainly did, but unfortunately he was assassinated five days after the Confederate surrender at Appomattox and wasn't able to implement his grand designs.

6) Is it really fair to call Lincoln a tyrant because of the mistakes of his successors?

Many of them already tightly control public opinion and don't need a war to help with that. In the few that don't, a war would be convenient, although it's pretty tricky to start one without a great cassus belli if they don't already have a stranglehold over the media and Internet access. The rise of ISIS was immensely convenient for Erdogan, if you're looking for other examples.

MSNBC doesn't appear to have Kornacki on this at the moment, but it seems pretty good for Mamdani (and New Yorkers generally) so far.

Zohran Mamdani -- 362,789 ----------- 43.9%

Andrew Cuomo ---- 294,826 ----------- 35.8%

~76% of votes counted

Mamdani winning would be the perfect birthday present for me and I don't even live in NY.

Edit: if I'm reading this map right, looks like he's doing remarkably well in the predominantly Jewish neighborhoods. Glad to see the bad faith accusations of antisemitism didn't work.

Seems like it comes down to the people that ranked Lander first which should break Mamdani's way.

Hearing a lot about how Cuomo could still run in the general, which would really put the "vote blue no matter who" centrists in a tough spot. Really wouldn't surprise me for them to encourage Cuomo to run as a spoiler, but I'm hoping I'm just being overly pessimistic.

I had an interesting chat with my boomer MIL about the general idea of running a moderate third party if a socialist wins. She was super against the idea. It was interesting to hear how she viewed adherence to the process as important from a conservative angle even if it meant voting for a socialist. She was basically like “can’t just take the ball and go home, that’s not how this works”.

Big city Democrats apparently haven't learned the lesson of De Blasio, Brandon Johnson, or anyone else. Wonder who they'll blame when he doesn't succeed, either. Oh well, feel bad for NY but I guess the rest of the country will get yet another reminder of why they are moving out of blue areas.

What does "succeed" mean to you in this context?

It means making people's lives better as they understand it. Controlling crime, implementing policies that make life cheaper to live, improved public services, the things people normally want out of mayors. If he's serious about absurd things like city run grocery stores then he's in for a hard time. Or if he tries to follow De Blasio and change school admission policies to artificially lower the number of Asians in the best schools. I don't know how power is shared in NYC but I wonder how the city council will interact with him. And i wonder if Eric Adams is liking what he sees.

I mean, all the reasons you’ve listed are still dogshit no matter what state you live in. Have you seen the infrastructure in the United States? It is a disgrace.

The only real difference in “red” states are typically lower taxes. Which only really means anything if you’re a property owner who can basically insulate themselves from the rest of the state with schools, neighbours, etc by using their money.

Sliwa is not a particularly strong candidate from the Republicans which looks like a missed opportunity. With Adams potentially splitting votes it could have been a situation chaotic enough to make a serious play. Next chance is NY governor next year. Since Zeldin started closed the gap some last time vs. Hochul in the gubernatorial race, as people see the results of IMadMan's socialism play out in NYC the rest of the state may revolt more at having to foot the bill for state level services that cover NYC while NYC falls into a deficit the next few years if they don't manage correctly.

Republicans practically conceding the former home of the Twin Towers to a self-proclaimed Muslim socialist in 2025, without a fight, could have been the opening premise for a blockbuster semi-apocalyptic horror movie/thriller in ~2002 (Silwa would have that hat too lol). Except for that it might have just been too implausible.

I don't have a lot of hope for electoralism, but this is about the best you can ask for from it at the moment.

How Hochul and Mamdani get along will be an interesting dynamic to keep an eye on.

Imagine thinking declining property values, declining GDP, and declining tax revenue would be a win because hey, rent will be cheaper.

GDP is a dick measuring contest of the top 0.1% unless the lower classes have access to that extra cash. In the US, they don't even get a glimpse of it.
Likewise property value and tax revenue, it all doesn't mean anything without such context.

I assume high property value is really nice for those people who own that property. Sadly not really something that is possible for most people of our generation unless we inherit it.

Exactly right. It results in misused or underutilized property, where it would benefit the working class a ton if they had access to it (i.e. for rent/ownership, as a workplace, etc.)
A lot of assets are just sitting there. Second/third/fourth homes/mansions. Empty office space. It's wild how much money is dusting away. Nobody benefits - oh but GDP go brrrr, so it's fine I guess.
