Matthew’s study found that women were harassed four times more than men, and 63% of women reported being called a “c*nt, bitch, slut, and whore.” Others reported they were threatened with sexual assault, or asked for sexual favors, and stereotypical comments regarding female gender roles were prevalent as well. We’re assuming these comments include, but were not limited to: ‘go make me a sandwich’ or ‘get back in the kitchen and make me some pie.’
Many insults hurled at the women, according to the survey participants, also included derogatory comments regarding their weight or general physical appearance.
“Women were also much more likely to quit playing a game because of sex-based harassment than were men,” says the report. “35.8% of women reported having quit playing temporarily because of sexism, and 9.6% reported that they quit playing a certain game permanently because of harassment.
“The numbers for men in the same areas were 11.7% and 2.6% respectively – about a third of the percentage for women in each case.”
A new Pew Research study found that 40 percent of all Internet users have experienced some harassment online, and 73 percent have witnessed others being harassed. But even though online harassment has become a ubiquitous experience, the way it is experienced differs radically between men and women. The Pew study determined that women are more likely to be victims of its more severe forms, including stalking and sexual harassment, while men are more likely to experience less severe forms, such as name-calling.
"sex based harassment", how about harassment in general? the only reason women get sex based harassment is because they respond to it, fueling the fire. Sex based harassment don't work on guys, so usually the target shifts towards their mothers, and shit.
So basically its women's fault they get sexually harassed because they respond to it? You are like one step away from saying "She was asking for it."
lmao. no.
i'm saying they're going to get harassed severely REGARDLESS of their sex. the only reason the harassment shows up as "sex based harassment", is because they respond to it.
For example, if we got an American black female gamer, and somehow trolls find out she's black and female. After "why are you gaming in the kitchen?" insults don't work, they'll start using racist insults instead, or some combo of sex based and race based insults. If those don't work, they'll start combining American police-state politics with the fact that she's black to insult her. etc etc.
The evidence shows otherwise, that not only do they receive the same amount of harassment as men, but the harassment increases once the harassers find out she is a woman.

And once again, I have to ask: so what? I don't understand why people keep bringing that up. If you're being sexist with an ulterior motive, that doesn't magically make the sexism go away...

The point is that its not some evil patriarchy keeping women down. It's just your average trolling. The troll will use whatever insults get a rise out of their target. If racist insults work, that's what they'll use. If sexist insults work, that's what they'll use. If ethnic insults work, that's what they'll use.
Don't like the trolls? Stop feeding them. Use the mute/block functions of whatever game you're on. Report the trolls if it's bad enough. Go to a better server. Making this issue a big circus is exactly the opposite of what you should do.
People who play online games can be real jerks. Women are every bit as capable as ignoring/handling these morons as men. To suggest they need special treatment to protect them from these evil words is sexist.

You keep acting as if we don't get that. What we don't get is what you think this has to do with the conversation.

No one has made the argument that women cannot deal with sexism.

Seems to me that people are suggesting they can't handle online insults, otherwise the argument would be that being a dick online in general is the issue. Anyways instead of complaining about it, why not think up solutions?
How about games include one server where "trash talk" is allowed, and another where you get suspended/banned/whatever if you start calling people racial slurs or telling them you're gonna bang their moms? People of both genders can choose whether they want to subject themselves to civil conversation or not.

You and others have though. Every time you or others say that men cannot understand how it feels, you're implying women are special little snowflakes who cannot handle harsh language and must be protected from such vulgarity.

Of course they handle it. Many handle it by not playing games as much, or at all, anymore. You just have to ask yourself if that's a result you are comfortable with. Also, you conveniently ignore that it isn't all harsh language but literal stalking and threats of rape or death. We're just trying to say there is a better outcome to all of this than women being forced out of gaming because people are assholes on the internet. We could, you know, stop being assholes on the internet. A lofty goal, but one worth striving for, don't you think? And infinitely better than just resigning ourselves to the fact that the internet will only get worse and the only way to navigate it is to don your iron skin and ignore half of the people who talk to you in what is supposed to be a social experience.

If we want to talk about ideals, I rather live in a world where speech isn't restricted, whether it's by laws or social pressures to only speak in niceties and useless platitudes.

I'm not sure I see why this is a realistic connection. It is one thing to say that experiencing society as a man is different from experiencing society as a woman. This is a position that quantitative and qualitative observations, as well as certain trends in contemporary social theory, support very strongly. It is something else to assert that noting a difference in experience must imply that women are "special little snowflakes who cannot handle harsh language." There seems to be an underlying assumption at play here, which is that either men and women have the same experiences or women need protection. This assumption seems difficult to support.
My understanding of the documentary---again, based on the article---is that it encourages women to get more involved in the gaming industry, not that it asks for some kind of special treatment. Getting more women into the industry is suggested as a way to work against harassment. This is, in fact, very much distinct from seeking special treatment. It is encouraging women to go into an environment to assert their own right to be there.
Determining how effectively the documentary makes this claim seems challenging without watching the documentary.

Why take it all the way to that extreme? A world in which people aren't horrible jerks to other people on the internet does not necessarily have to have restrictions on speech. It's also troubling that you seem to think the only alternative to acting like a dick is by speaking in niceties and useless platitudes.
If you want to live in a world where there is no societal pressure to be nice to other people, I don't know what to tell you except that you are most definitely in the minority. Good luck with that.

You make a decent point but your writing style is really obnoxious. Get to the point, you aren't writing a law textbook dude.
Women are treated very differently than men in gaming and the world in general. In gaming it's just toxic though. We all take a lot of shit our way because that's unfortunately the nature of the beast as it is right now. Which is a systemic problem that tbh needs to be changed otherwise we're all just sifting through shit online when you just want to come online to have fun.
Misogyny is just rampant in men all over the world in general, it's just extra pathetic seeing it online on a day to day basis. The sad thing is that there's very few people who speak up against it when it's happening. Which is also pathetic. When I see someone online who thinks of me as a friend being a retard, I let them know I don't stand for their retardation. More people need to do the same.
I think blaming it on age in gamers is sometimes valid, but mostly a sad excuse because at some point the 20 year old man children have to not act like they are 12.
This is what I hate. When people think the CoD online community is an accurate or well-represented population of the gaming community as a whole. I've played the game about 3 times and seen friends play it. It's pure fucking cancer full of immature children that want to shit-talk behind a mic. I don't get why anyone would want to deal with it at all. Why speak to them through a mic? If you're not a girl, they'll find a way to shit-talk you and make you feel like shit.
But hey, what does it matter. SJWs don't give a fuck about blanket statements that shine a negative light over gaming as a whole.
Remember guys, when it comes to kids and games, the idea of "think of the children!" is a joke. Toxic game environment is a non-issue when it comes to 12 year olds and trash talking each other.
But the second females gets trash talk, "think of the women!" is actually a serious topic. Do people really think that lowly of female gamers?
On March 09 2015 01:05 travis wrote: I really don't think the immature kids that talk to girl gamers like this are going after girl gamers. I think they are being dicks to everyone. Most guys, especially ones over 12, LOVE to have girls that play their games too.
In general this "defend girl gamers!" thing is ridiculous. Everyone has to deal with the shitty little immature trolls, not just girls.
The "defend girl gamers" thing is mostly because girls are just starting to play games. Trolling is not a new thing in videogames. So the social justice crowd, who's only experience with videogames is angry birds or candy crush, assume the trolling is about girl gamers, when really its nothing new.
Haha xD angry birds and candy crush, too dam funny but its true.
Ideally this wouldn't be an issue. Personally I tend towards Millitron's 'misogyny is the mechanism rather than the motivator' line of reasoning, for the most part. There are genuinely misogynistic assholes out there, but the majority I would surmise use a female gamer's gender as the stick to beat them with while trash talking, rather than it being the reason behind it. Likewise racist insults, likewise other. I don't really care myself for such trash talk, but once it became clear I was Irish I got a lot of abuse tailored towards that and I believe much of this is in a similar vein.
Frankly I'm fed up with this kind of fucking shit. Gaming's 'toxicity' is at worst a symptom of general societal misogyny and not a fucking root cause, these kind of articles and discussions lead nowhere.
Want a world without this kind of blowback? Stop making celebrities out of women solely because they're hot, stop picking apart womens' physical flaws for the sake of copy, stop defining women by their attractiveness in the media culture. Stop placing those on a pedestal who have these rarified characteristics to the detriment of those who don't. An entire industry operates around pointing out flaws in beautiful women and then playing on the physical hangups of those who don't measure up to these archetypes.
Oh but yeah fuck me gamers are such dicks for being unpleasant over the internet.
Also fuck any girl who uses her gender and sexuality to gain a following in eSports/Twitch and then who subsequently complains about sexism if it's negative. Sexism isn't just negativity, it can be 'positive' - witness the idea of chivalrous behaviour which perpetuates sexism just as much as negative BS does.
I hope no one is going to try to equate rape threats, stalking, and sexual harassment on the same level as other forms of harassment. Let's not be illogical here. http://fatuglyorslutty.com/ And before anyone tries to say use the example of someone saying "You got raped" when a one sided game happens, my sister made it clear that there is a huge difference between someone saying you got owned in a vulgar and immature way compared to saying "I will rape you" upon finding out the person is female.

When I played PSO with my sister, many of the guild members I was with would give all these gifts to her (some of which I got to keep ) due to the fact that she was a girl and would keep on insisting she has these gifts even when she refused. This certainly is better than being called a bitch, but to somehow call this patronizing behavior "positive" is a step too far. Polar opposite treatment is not always better.
To really oversimplify things, part of the issue for me is illustrated in the hypothetical example following, and how each would be perceived and reported upon:
Destiny gets DDoSed - People dislike Destiny so are dicks to him. Prominent female streamer gets DDoSed - People dislike women so are dicks to women.
Like I said it's simplistic, but that's how these kind of things tend to be discussed. I place DDoSing above abuse actually because it can actually impact on one's livelihood if you're a streamer, but it's just a hypothetical example.
I say this from a privileged position, being a white caucasian straight male, people tend to like or dislike me based on my own personality, my likes and dislikes etc. We need to move to a world where that is applicable to everybody, and genuinely I feel my own personal demographic is pretty much the only one that benefits from this kind of appraisal. Everyone else for some reason has to be appraised through the prism of gender, sexuality or race (to some degree) and it's fucking counterproductive.
