That's right, Robert Altman.
One of the greatest film directors in American history passed away Monday night.
Director of such films as Short Cuts, MASH, Nashville, Gosford Park, 3 Women, The Player, Tanner '88, and my personal favorite, The Long Goodbye, Altman ranged from epic to intimate but never lost his ability to show that people and situations are never as simple as they may seem. His take on interaction rages from the comically dark to overwhelmingly sprawling to uncomfortably close and familiar.
While not as revered as Scorsese, as technically skilled as Lumet, or as "cool" as Tarantino, Altman's style has left an indelible mark on American cinema, and he will certainly be remembered as one of the best ensemble directors of all time.

Here's his IMDB page, take a look through and see which films of his you may have seen, and let's talk about them.

I've only seen the gingerbread man. But none of the movies he's made seem to stand out for some reason, I've only heard about a couple others. Is this because he wasn't the blockbuster type of director, or maybe because movies weren't like that so much. He doesn't seen to have gotten better with age tho, latest ones are all unknown to me. But maybe I should go watch a couple more of his movies and then judge...

Indeed, let's.
Altman is one of the key figures who influenced me to make a living in the film industry. He did what he did in Hollywood, yet he was un-Hollywood to the core. He really changed the lanscape of cinema, as stupid as that phrase sounds.
Watch Nashville, MASH, The Player, Short Cuts, and The Long Goodbye.
I was so very saddened to hear that he passed away.
RIP.

M.A.S.H = no thanks.
I'll take your word for it on the other stuff though.

I thought the film MASH was quite excellent. Hell, the opening song of the film was good enough for me to call it an excellent film. This is beside the fact that it was very funny, but also managed to 'make me cry.'

i've seen the company. read the description of three women a bunch of times on my digital cable but never watched it for some reason. i think. the company was good. it stands above most movies for me but i tend to appretiate alot of movies on a more non-schallant level.

The Long Goodbye!!! I love the book, Marlowe is my favorite detective ever. How good is the movie? The actor playing Marlowe didn't look good to me at first sight (poster at imdb).
How can i watch it? Torrent maybe?

Bonanza and M*A*S*H were good watches. Still enjoy reruns on dutch television.
But yeah, didn't really leave a lasting impression on me. Just made a bunch of enjoyable things to watch and laugh about, but nothing that really thrills me.
But even the talented and great among us have to pass away some day.
