I've been playing since Red/Blue and if anything, Pokemon taught me how to have respect for all of the pokemon in the game. Hell, I've even loved all the animals period because of pokemon.
This hype will die down soon I hope.
Very nice counterargument, totally forgot about that... also it's very important that not only do the trainers love their pokemon, but the pokemon love them back (and if it's one sided love, the show has spent episodes conveying how it's wrong to, for example, a trainer to keep a pokemon that doesn't want to be with the trainer)

How about the episode where they save charmanders life when its flame is going out because the trainer told it to wait on that rock and it stayed there until ash and friends came along? Or when he steals misty's bike because pikachu is dying in the storm and he needs to get it to a hospital?

It's just a game and a tv show that isn't based in reality. The pokemon in the show love to fight and want their trainers and other allied pokemon to win so it really isn't cruelty.

So, can we assume Michael Vick watched a lot of pokemon in his late teens?

Well if i recall correctly, in pokemon you pretty much live like a hobo and train animals to fight kindof like dogfights. So all in all, if you think about it carefully it's pretty effed up. Then again it's from japan so obviously you wouldn't expect it to be logic, and should take this with a grain of salt. But all in all pokemon was quite fun ... and so are "pseudo" realistic war games, and thrillers with serial killers involved, etc etc ...
But yeah i mean, if you're PETA and you want to do some PR stuff to gain attention your choices are kindof limited, you don't make an announcement to an announcement or a trailer for an announcement to a future announcement on teamliquid. You try to shock people and "act offended" etc etc ... All is well and logical

The most recent Pokemon, Pokemon Black+White 1, was pretty poorly written. The bad guys were saying "We shouldn't enslave pokemon and make them fight eachother, just to heal them up and make them fight again."
The bad guys were completely right. Pokemon is great as a fiction, but that game tried to really look at the ethical heart of Pokemon, and the truth is, if we enacted Pokemon in real life, it would be a crime. I didn't care about the ethics of Pokemon until the most recent game, where they completely dropped the ball and basically said, "No. Forcing animals to fight to within inches of your life is fine."
It was a bonehead move by Nintendo and Gamefreak.

The worst part of it is that the peaceful moves do nothing, so they are station that only violence can solve what they perceive as problems. Also it looks like they actually had someone who played the game make this, that's kind of ironic.

Yes - Pokemon horrifically teaches people to care and love their animal friends. This incredibly realistic show where - just like in the circus - the animals are vapourized into a red light and compressed into tiny spheres in no way promotes establishing a loving and nurturing relationship between humans and the other species that also inhabit our planet.
Similarly - Looney Tunes promotes unsuspecting violence towards animals. When children see Bugs Bunny surviving shotgun blasts to the face they become encouraged to try such behaviour on their friends unaware of the actual consequences (see story below).
Friend mistaken for Daffy Duck
Also - some of the so called "attack moves" used in the Pokemon show are incredibly inappropriate:

It was a bonehead move by Nintendo and Gamefreak. Pokemon and animals were never a direct equivalency for me, even as a kid. As far as I was and am concerned, Pokemon are a species of fantastic being that is altogether unique in such a way as to render their reflection on real life interactions totally ridiculous.

I'm really glad that PETA has finally solved all issues that real animals are facing, so they have the time and energy to promote rights for imaginary animals.

But there's no Sea Kittens in Pokemon... (please tell me someone gets this reference)

Does anyone even take these guys seriously anymore? I know I never have.
