I did (and embarrassingly still do) play pokemon, and love the game, but PETA isn't trying to say you shouldn't play pokemon. They're saying that the way pokemon are treated would be terrible if it was done in real life, and that it is indeed done in real life with real animals.

If we accept PETAs premise, we are in a world where certain animals have essentially super powers, a pokeball is a clever thing, the pokemon aren't uncomfortable inside them... ffs the ball is about 1/20th the size of even some of the smallest pokemon...... surely they understand that ITS NOT REAL. Pokemon actually encourages you to treat pets well, if you don't they get unhappy and don't fight well.

Nothing more needs to be said, if you can't tell the difference, you are a piece of shit like PETA. User was banned for this post.

No one ever played pokemon and then tried to stuff their cat in a little ball and expect it to not bite them... ok well someone probably did but anyone with half a brain wouldn't do it.

PETA is not saying you shouldn't play pokemon because pokemon are real creatures and suffer because your gameboy is an Ender's Game like device that control real animals. They're saying that if pokemon were real it would be clear animal abuse, and in some cases animals in the real world are treated like pokemon are treated in the fictional world.

But how do they know that? I think one of the premises of Pokemon is that they aren't like real animals. How many animal species are you aware of that can transform into a red light/gas and compress into a tiny sphere? We don't even really know what goes on in there - only that they can rest. If Pokemon were real involving real animals without an extensive modification of their physical properties then yes might be abusive - but then - half of action movies would be highly immoral if they were real. Harry Potter would have been a genocide. The main point is that it's fiction. The second main point is - within the universe of the fiction, respectful and caring treatment of Pokemon is promoted.

If Pokemon was real, HUMANITY WOULD PROBABLY HAVE GONE EXTINCT, I mean they are giant ultra-powered beasts of death. Its not even a remotely sane comparison because Pokemon defies reality in so many ways. And like I said, PETA making the comparison between Pokemon and animal abuse is just idiocy, mostly because of the way they approach it. They approach it like an attention whore. If they focused on the legitimate issue of animal abuse and didn't parody popular children's games then maybe their messages would be taken even mildly seriously, but I think at this point they don't expect anyone to take them seriously, all they seem to want is to garner some attention to themselves. Shit, read DarkPlasmaBalls post in this thread, PETA is really in no position to be parodying Pokemon.

But you're just flipping 1's and 0's. It's not real. Animals are treated poorly in the real world. So what? What does that have to do with the fictional world of pokemon? What does that have to do with games that, if you actually read the dialogue, promote a healthy relationship with companions? Your whole purpose in the first two games is to keep Team Rocket from turning all pokemon in the world into mindless slaves. Sure, you fight with them. But what people don't remember is that it's an RPG. All RPGs have some sort of combat in them, and they almost always include beating up on wild animals, tamed animals, machines, etc. If PETA wants people to take them seriously, they will have to choose to attack a different industry. However, PETA doesn't care if you take them seriously or not. They just want to stay alive and relevant.

To put things more simple : people confusing pokemon for real life animals are the problem, its not the fictional series that is at fault.

Is it legal to use those pictures? Trademarked names and characters that look nearly the same. Don't some Japanese company own those images and are they protected from lawsuits?
