BW is still the #1 esport in korea no? LoL is #1 according to kotakus opinion?
Well, LoL is very popular currently in Korea, but the piece itself is just saying it's #1 because the prize pools for the two tournaments are huge. Which really isn't the best way to say what e-sport is the biggest in Korea. GOM gave away a gigantic amount of money last year and Brood War was still bigger in Korea.
If you had actual, you know, ratings and showed that LoL on OGN was much better than the Brood War ratings then you could say it's taken over the #1 spot.

Hey guys guys, if you look closely, then you can see that kotaku is "k" + "otaku", and otaku is an evil thing therefore these news are wrong.

typical Kotaku sensationalism. I wish you'd stop giving them hits for shit like this.

Is this depressed me greatly. Greatness is dead...

The issue with SC2 not being popular in Korea was more of the failures of Blizzard to properly market SC2. I mean, starting off with pushing a lawsuit against kespa didnt do any favors, and they just kind of in general created an early animosity because of said relations with kespa that kind of made sc2 hard to establish.
Good for LoL on getting established in Korea and good luck to it.

Kind of want to see top BW players in Starcraft 2 more now.

LoL is just a shadow of DOTA. The 2 DOTAs coming out will take over from them I hope.

Not a Kotaku fan at all...but this is very, very sad and depressing.

That's what should have a happen with SC2 a year ago in korea It's good for LoL and esports in general but i have to say i don't like that game and i would have prefer DotA2 or even HoN being picked over LoL but you have to go with the most popular game...and today its LoL

Blizzard is to blame for this.
Riot = supports LoL as an e-sport, helps promote the game as much as possible. Blizzard = sues OGN/MBC for royalties and takes them to court.
As much as I hate MOBA games, Blizzard deserves this for being greedy pricks.

This is all Blizzard's fault. They refuse to properly support SC2 and waged war against Broodwar.
LoL's developers totally support LoL, putting up millions of dollars in tournament prizes and very heavily promoting the game with stream links on the login page of LoL.

meh, stupid lol. i guess while the rest of the world will be slowly overtaken by dota 2 after its release (hopefully), the koreans will be isolated once again with LoL :D
|
Bah this makes me sad

i play lol alot but its not an esports game.... you cant watch it and be entertained. its almost impossible.

The problem with free games like LoL is that they can lose popularity just as fast as they gained it. And while it's great that Riot puts so much money back into the tournament scene, they do that because they need to buy loyalty from their players - otherwise they will just switch to the next good free game, or even the next MOBA game. They know they need to build a strong foundation because DOTA2 and Blizz DOTA will hit them like an earthquake.
edit: not to mention, kotaku is gawker so their opinion on ESPORTS is about as valuable dirt.

i can sum the game up as sending your ability power carry mid your attack damage carry bottom with a support with some sort of solo top and jungleing ganker to the forest...
How is that a fucking esport? Sure the games fun and I have played 300 games of it with friends but fuck...

I really hope that Blizzard stops being so terrible at supporting SC2 and do something to compete with LoL.
Give us clan support and group replay viewing. Sell us microtransaction name changes, language packs, and other server access. Embed Twitch.tv streams of tournaments into to splash page after logging into Battle.net.
Taking those steps will make the game more popular, make SC2 eSport more popular, and make them more money. The fact that they haven't done this yet means the people running SC2 at Blizzard just don't care.

I'm actually feeling a little depressed now. T.T
