Anyone who has actually eaten real ramen in asia knows that it's futile anyway, adding eggs and shit won't make it taste like actual ramen. I dont think anybody agrees that ramen noodles are the best tasting food in the world. What people are posting in this thread for is trying to spice up a $1 meal to make it taste better. Well, when "spicing up" means adding 3$ worth of extra ingredients and 4 times the effort of cooking it, one should probably ask themselves if it's worth eating a "1$" meal at all. White person spotted. It's the other way round that's unusual: I doubt many Asians regularly eat just a plain block of instant noodle with only the flavouring. You're supposed to add stuff and cracking in an egg/putting in some kimchi/chinese leaf/sliced meat/etc isn't really that much effort anyway.
Even white people can understand this ghetto, make the most of your food concept. More like "ramen noob spotted".

The guys who are defending instant noodles and try call them ramen as if it was the real deal are calling other people noobs? Did I miss something or is this thread actually not about ramen but some weird American noodle dish?
|
Where does one find the not instant noodles form of ramen? The closest thing I've been able to find at my local supermarket was fedelini, which is basically a thin spaghetti. Asian Grocery stores where I live basically just have walls and walls of fancier instant noodles lol. I guess I could investigate more closely to see if they have any giant packages of ramen without the freeze dried veggies.
|
If you mean fresh ramen packs it's technically still instant since you just heat them up but yeah it's a huge difference from dried noodles. Also you tend to get some decent broth with it and not just powder. I'm yet to see any of this outside of Japan. :/

My favorite method of preparing Ramen is to 1. Cook some strips of Beef and broccolli in a pan, suing sesame oil 2. Add bullion(beef) to the ramen while it is cooking 3. Add kimchi 4. Combine everything 5. Watch a stream while having the best meal ever.

What's the closest kind of noodle to ramen that you could find at a western grocer?

In the United States, this is what has been popularized as "Ramen." You can even see on the first page that a lot of people consider "Ramen" and "instant noodles" synonymous with each other.
Assuming you read the first post, it's pretty clear that we're talking about spicing up a cheap dish of instant noodles, not trying to create actual Ramen.

Uh, try K-Mart if there's one near you, they tend to carry some pretty good products.

I eat the block uncooked with some of the powder sprinkled on it. I started doing this in the military when we didn't have enough water to put the noodles in. Haters gon' hate.

I throw the egg in last right before I think the noodles will be done.

Your Welcome.

Ive tried lots of stuff, but in the end I always settle for just adding egg and some hot sauce. Everything else is too time consuming for such a simple and efficient meal.
|
I tend to keep it simple.
1. Boil water. 2. Put the soup in boiling water. 3. Put the noodles in broth. Cook for 2-3 minutes. 4. Pour contents into an appropriate-sized bowl. 5. Put in egg in the bowl right afterwards. 6. Stir, then enjoy.
I do step 5 because it cools the ramen down enough for immediate consumption without it being too cool. It also mellows out the flavor if you can't take too much spice.
|
Even simpler :
You will need : - Bowl - Water - Kettle - Ramen
I'll let you do the math.
|
I put it in a glass bowl with water and a lid and put it in the microwave for 5 minutes then let it sit for another 5 and they get sooo soft its delicious. As a vegetarian I cannot use the majority of their sauce packets so I've concocted a little spice packet of my own. I add hot sauce and some tony's and a little bit of chili powder. Let me tell you it is the most delicious thing I have ever eaten. Perfect cheap alterative to other expensive ass vegetarian dishes.
Edit: I'd take instant ramen over real ramen anyday, bro.

It is like a description of a noodle... they're all basically made of the same stuff, but have different shapes which work with different kinds of dishes. For example, ramen is very convenient to eat with chopsticks in soup. Spaghetti probably would not be.
