I wonder who's going to be the last to change over?
Compiled reasons why the Metric system (*cough gay*) sucks and why Imperial is better.
1) When I measure, I measure like a man. Not like some girly European socialist. "Ooh, let's have some crumpets and walk a kilometer holding hands!" Pfff.
2) Kids love Fruit By The Foot. You want to give kids Fruit By The Meter? We already have an obesity epidemic you insensitive pricks.
3) Would you rather have your circumcised dick measured in manly inches or centimeters? That's what I thought.
4) Would you rather say you drank a fucking GALLON of Red Bull or 3.78 liters of English tea? Pfff again Europeans...
5) One meter is equal to the distance that light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. WHAT IN THE ROYAL FUCK? An inch is about the length of your thumb, and a foot is about, you guessed it, your foot. You can put away your particle accelerator now.
6) One degree Celsius is equal to the fraction of 1/273.16 “of the thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water.” .... I... just... No. Fuck you celsius. Fuck you.
7) "Cause I would walk 500 kilometers and I would walk 500 more, just to be the man who walked 1000 kilometers to end up at your door." Hey, that's catchy!
8) I know what pounds per inch means. It makes sense. Who knows what the fuck a "Pascal" or a "Newton per meter" is? Enjoy having your tires blow out while you try to figure it out. That's tyres for people with small dicks.
9) Hey, Metric lovers. When are you gonna switch to a base-10 clock to measure time? Hypocrits.
10) Edit: Actually, no. Fuck number ten.
11) How many apostles did Jesus have again? 10? Even God uses Imperial.
12) "OMG it's SO hot, it's 38.4 degrees outside!" Again, fuck you celsius.
USA, Liberia, Myanmar 1-0 Rest of the world.

We use 1, 2, and sometimes 3 liter bottles in the US all the time, its the standard for soft drinks.
As I said earlier the world often uses Imperial-type measurements without even realizing it. Like 1 AU, 1 light year, etc...
These are developing sciences.

Precisely. This is the history of why we chose what we chose.
Base 10 is just a really nice fad we have going on right now.

First of all,
Now that that's out of the way, I'm looking forward to the dainty metric rebuttal!

Buried deep in this thread is my argument for base 12 number system to be used.
|
And in about 200 years we are going to have threads on the Neo TL with stuff like
"I cant believe those earth guys still use hours/days/min/years. God how could they use a system of time so arbitrary that relies on how many times there planet rotates the sun. Why did they ever use such a stupid system".
LOL us mericans need Fruit By The Meter, foot is not enough anymore.

At this point wouldnt Hexadecimal make more sense?

There will never be any man that can ever convince me that the imperial system has any pros going for it, ever. Not in comparison to the metric system, no sir.

it sucks to be an engineer in the us since you have to learn and use both systems >.>

It's because base 12 is divisible by 2 3 4 6, base 16 is 2 4 8.
Ease of use in head is all.

The only granted pro is in ease of remembering everything. Outside of that it's entirely circumstantial. There is no logical argument either way past that, if ease of remembering is all you're looking for then you're sold outside of that it's just as arbitrary in some instances but useful in others based on defined forces that aren't accounted for.
Btw do people use Gradians seems just as pointless to me.

Imperial, not even once.
Temperature, is far more accurate in Imperial terms, that's about the only thing I'd give credit to.

I use Fahrenheit unless it's less than 48ºF, then I switch to Celcius. Anyone else do this or just me?

Out of curiosity, why do you do this?

Most thing I use metrics with. Imperial is just awkward when you have to do a conversion. Reminds me of Harry Potter currency.

I think gradians are something that the military used/uses. I guess it just seems more nice and round (how did 360 degrees get chosen anyway?).

Ancient (e.g. Babylonian) number systems often used base 60 (which is where we get 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 360 degrees in a circle, etc.) because 60 is evenly divisible in many, many ways (many different factors and a large quantity of small prime factors). It made doing geometry and fractions and other primitive math very easy to do.

By 1 digit, do you mean that you're now going into the single digit values? Because 50 degrees F is 10 degrees C, so I would think you would switch below that (or use that as your benchmark).
Also, how does that better express how cold it is than consistently decreasing your current degrees by the same scale (rather than converting)? Or is it just like "single digit Celsius = frickin cold imo, but everything else I prefer F because that's the norm here"? (If the latter, why not "below 50 degrees F is frickin cold here"?)
