What's that? I think its a pic that highlights that essentially America and only a few other countries use Imperial instead of metric. This though is a vast simplyfing of it. For example here in the UK we officially use Metric, but I don't know many people who could tell em their height in meters, and most people would still use stone and pounds for weight. A lot of it comes from parents. They used imperial so always weighed/measured us using that system. I personally use both a lot of it depends on the distance. eg if someone was close I would say they are a couple of feet away. if they were across the room I would say they are 10 meters away, and if they were across the country I would say they are 100 miles away. I think it will all over time move to metric though. It will just filter down through generations. Yeah that map's awful. Canadians use imperial as well. Every Englishman I've spoken seem to prefer to use mile, pound etc instead of kilometre and kilo. It seems to show how far the metric system has spread in any way shape or form, rather than which is primarily used where. What do Australians and Indians use? Australians use metric. Some people (usually older people in my experience) use imperial for height but thats about it. Some people prefer to use imperal measurements but they will also know metric, the reverse is not true

Wow how did this thread reach 66 pages... Is the imperial system really that funny to people?

Yes. People think it's hilarious to say things like: "The imperial system is fucking stupid! Why would you ever use the imperial system? It sucks. Why does the US still use this terrible system?" because they aren't wise enough to realize that nobody actually likes it. It's just not reasonable to make the change when you build an entire country on an inferior system.

Metric is standard .

I love it when I'm at work and I say: "wow, that person is 140 kilo's", and they say: "how many pounds is that?"
just double it and add a bit! we've had metric since 1980

1. Standard goes more naturally with fractions - quarter of a pint, half foot, etc. Technically, you don't say half meter but rather 50 centimeters or 500 millimeters.
2. Standard units are more practical and convenient. No one goes to the grocery to buy 400ml drink, instead, they buy it in 12 ounces. No one buys 5 meters of wood, instead, they buy it is 1x1x12, all in feet. Me and everyone else around me says half a meter and 5 meters of wood. And you know why? Because USA is not the center of the world, stop being so arrogant and open up your mind. The reality is that there are zero pro arguments for the "standard" ( lol ) system

Edit: Also people say half a meter, half a kilometer, etc, all the time. but then it is not technically appropriate, because the metric system is designed to have specific measures for fractions, like 500 meters or so. saying half a kilometer borrows from the logic of standard system, though there is nothing wrong with it wtf?
"half a" is a mathemical term for "divided by 2". Its not borrowed from anything...

Then again, if imperial system is so bad, why can't the US just change it? I'm obliged to think it's more than practicality.

I use standard/imperial since I'm in the US. I'd much rather use metric since it's used in science and the conversions are more practical, but I'm obviously just more familiar with imperial.

Too hard to make the switch, it would confuse people and some probably wouldn't know what metric is or how to learn it.

tbh i don't think converting to metric has anything to do with how hard it is to convert over to metric for the states. Here in the states we tend to be.. how to put it.. stubborn i guess would be close. We have our way of doing things and don't really give a rats ass about how the rest of the world does it. There are other instances of this like American football compared to the rest of the worlds football for example.

The Imperial system is pretty stupid if you've used any sort of CAD program.

lol this wasn't a debate but a poll about who uses what. You are also missing the military dating system xD
year-->month--->day
|
Month: 1-12
Day: 1-31
Year: X-X
day range/month range/year range 1-12/1-31/0-9001
Thus, the American format is small/medium/large too. Thank you and good night.

Also, there are actually 3 countries left in the world that still use the Imperial System, not just one. The other two are Liberia and Myanmar. I'm not going to make a "countries that matter" joke here.
