Sigh im not surprised at all by this and after this post im going to look a lot more into this bill. I really want to do some V for Vendetta shit in this country. I mean revolutions have been happening every hundred or so years for last five century's why should America be any different, whatever just talking out loud. We shall see what happens!

I think it's also worth noting really quickly that Google and Facebook (Along with Twitter, eBay, Mozilla, Yahoo and others) are on it. I just saw this posted on The Hill's website.

If this thing ever passes I'm going to never stop talking about the land of hypocracy. I hope some people that actually use the internet can talk some sense into these guys.

rofl that would be the most dumb law ever.
just to make sure i get this, in theory I, as dutch non artist Internet user could for example place links on forums owned by, let's say warner bros, to movies owned by some other company and then make them take the site down?!
or is it just a select few that can force those sites to go down.

whats next going to prison for spoiling the ending of sopranos, because of lost revenue for those people not watching the last eps

The law's text won't say that but it will work like that.

Look, I understand the seriousness of it and all, but (no offense to our Chinese posters) this isn't China.

The sheer amount of hypocrisy this would cause, along with massive complaint in addition to the actual problems we should be dealing with (hai debt) would make the government look utterly foolish.

This would crush SO many US sites, while so many of you guys are arguing that it's a ploy for money, don't you also realize that equally vast amounts of money would be lost with the amount of sites that would be impacted by this?

Come on now guys, take deep breaths.

It's not getting passed.

It has gotten fairly far, which is kind of the concern. While ultimately it may be vetoed, there is no reason to prevent action on the chance that it can. It makes more sense to stop it before it gets to the last possible position that it can be eliminated.

No matter what happens, and as slim as the chances may be in the end, isn't it still right to talk about it? That's not hurting anyone. Take everything with a grain of salt, yes, but that goes both ways. Even though I'm not in the line of fire as american internet users would be, it still is an idea of shit-storm-epic proportions that can and should be discussed. Anti-internet piracy still has a lot of question marks that run deep.

Anyway...I can see the likes of Anon spreading these "illegal links" over every goverment (-related) page they find when this passes ;D

I get the concern, I just hate seeing things blown out of proportion.

Many retarded laws have gotten this far that many people don't know about.

Still, take the 2-3 mins (I did) to e-mail your local or state reps, because this bill cannot pass.

Yea, everyone needs to be concerned about this. It's not just affecting the US, this will affect the entire world. There are provisions in the bill the allow OUR government to completely block sites based anywhere in the world, with no legal process. Without going into any details, basically it allows our government the authority to control the entire content of the internet with site owners being powerless to defend themselves. It completely strips away any legal protections of free speech on the internet, and removes due process. Its an abomination.

Also, you NEEED to do your part to make sure your representatives know what this bill is. Cuz some of them have no freakin clue what theyre voting on (might not be news heh)

My major question is, and bear in mind I'm speaking hypothetically here

IF the bill went through, isn't it totally possible for the major companies to basically pack up and move to a country where this isn't an issue for them? Yeah it would cost a fair bit, and is not ideal, BUT at least they could operate as they want to

No, this bill grants control to the US government to affect the worldwide infrastructure of the internet.

It's designed to "[enhance] enforcement against rogue websites operated and registered overseas".

I just wanted to get a copy of this posted over on TeamLiquid, the article seems very vague on exactly how close this is to passing, but apparently it's very under the radar, and if what i read is true this law could end up getting sites like TeamLiquid blacklisted for copyright infringement even if the post in question was years ago.

Google knows it. Viacom knows it. The Chamber of Commerce knows it. Internet democracy groups know it. BoingBoing knows it. But, the Internet hasn't been told yet -- we're going to get blown away by the end of the year. The worst bill in Internet history is about to become law. Law is very real here in the United States and legal language is often different than stated intentions -- this law would give government and corporations the power to block sites like BoingBoing over infringing links on at least one webpage posted by their users. Believe the EFF, Public Knowledge, Google when they say this bill is about much more than copyright, it's about the Internet and free speech everywhere.

Full article here

You can not be serious. This can never happen, it would completly shutdown every forum based website there is!

The pint is that they wont be ... but it gives free reign for government to do what it likes ... so this is a bill that will pass.

The uk has a similar one in the pipelines.

It only gives worldwide authority in the countries that like to suck the usa's member. The US cant tell antoher country what to do unless they ahve a legal agreement with that country in place ... they can talk and reach an agreement ... but its not ordering.

The problem with packing up and moving is that if you want to do business in a country you have to be registered and go through legal hoops. So packing up and moving for most companies is not possible as they will be location dependant in some way.

How to develop a stalinoid state/government:
1) build prison camps
2) censor the internet

good job, America!
How pleasing europe has neither "a hollywood", but also more serious stuff to take care off. I'm happy not to be threatened living in a new-age North Korea.

I don't pretend to be a legal expert but this bill is certainly concerning. It didn't seem that there was a lot in the way of guidlines for what constituted a site dedicated to the spreading of US intellectual property. Perhaps the terms used in the bill have more set definitions in legalese, I am not sure. Nonetheless, the precedent is extremely disturbing

It was cute seeing the US government still trying to fight that hopeless, immoral War on Drugs though, A for effort guys

How is that even possible?

It can't possibly be made legal to give one country worldwide censorship...

You forgot include a form of teaching that uses authoritive texts as a form of knowledge.

you dont want to teach them how to think for crying out loud then all that hard work burning the books would of gone to waste.
