Yeah seems like people are trying really hard to get points, but they probably didn't learn anything lol.

I also brute-force the voabularies, but after the 2nd or 3rd repetition they are in my mind:D For the hard ones I need to make memes though. I also stop if I notice that my percentage of correct words is too low^^
I noticed that the things in my garden are really in my longterm brain, while the 60% of the things in the greenhouse need ~2 repetition before i can remember them correctly. Don´t know if this if optimal, but I learn a lot of words really solid

Also very important: The more a word is connected to other known words or things in your head, the easier it is to recall it later. Sometimes it´s better to think about a word than to rush

Wow dude thanks a lot for this webpage because I'm studying french but getting a list of verbs and repeat them in my head is so boring that is slowing me down but this type of memory exercise is very very good.

I recommend www.livemocha.com too, but the excercises there are pretty boring, it helps though.

This site is great, will spend so much time on it. However it would be great if there was a way to practice pinyin to english and the other way around. I would also want to choose which words to plant as new seeds.

There needs to be an option for ignoring or removing specific words whose translations are incomplete or just plain wrong from your list. There's a pretty big difference between "ball" and "measuring tape" and "orange" isn't necessarily the same as "orange colored". There are also some words that are correct but have a specific situation to be used on, so added context to the translation is necessary.

Not necessarily. I cracked the top 100 and most of my points come from trying to score 100% on my 28 word Korean seeds. One mistake meant that I would finish the set and try again. The writing part is what made it hard. Try not messing up one character, whether by accident or failure to remember.
It's been 7 or so hours since that session and I can guarantee you I remember at least 20 of those words with correct spelling.
But anecdotal evidence is anecdotal. Can't speak for everyone .

So I've been trying to do this a lot over the pass two days. Strictly for learning and not for points. I've found some personal problems with it though.
The first problem I have which it isn't a big deal. I do understand that it's still pretty early in development but I still think I should mention that it's glitchy. Once in a while it will just say that I was correct when I leave the written questions blank (might be compatibility issue with Opera though).
I've started and deleted about 6 of the korean word databases. It seems that none of the words have any mems yet(again, I understand its still super early) and it's making it hard for me to follow (compared to the mem'd words).
It might be my technique but I just can't see myself getting into a routine with this. I want to stay with the same group of 15 words instead of being bombarded with more everytime I click the harvest/planting/watering/grow button (or what ever its called). I could just be in the wrong state of mind but I'll never get the written questions right because of the amount of words being added every time.
If I'm doing this wrong, please let me know because I 1. Want to be able to use this and 2. Will edit this post for others who may be in the same situation as me. For the time being, I'm trying really hard to get into this because I love the idea of simple in browser practice but.... I simply can't.

this looks pretty interesting. I only did 1 round of planting seeds but this is definitely going to help my reading at the very least. I will play around with it more later. TL-KazeHydra.

I'm going to keep using this, regardless of my criticism; however, it's a shame that the word rotation seems quite poor. I've decided to take only a few new words today and go over the words I did yesterday, but I tend to get the same cluster of words and I tend to get the same word(s) multiple times in the same test. It's convenient this program works the way it does as I prefer this greatly to notecards / writing out lists, but I suppose I will have to supplement with them until the kinks in the program are worked out.

TL-qrs has been busting the french mnemonics.. We seem to have completely taken over the place.

Absolutely loving this so far. A few glitches like babyfactory has been saying, but I like the way you can load different 'packages' depending on your level.

It really does feel like once I get words into my garden, they're solidified in my mind.

There's a "More learning options" button on the wordlist screen (the screen where you can change between seeds, greenhouse and garden). You can change to new words only. Ideally I'd like to have a slider where I can set the exact ratio of new and old words but it's better than nothing.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think in "garden" mode the algorithm tends to focus on words it's less confident you know.

Yeah, I've been toying with it and I still run in to the same problem. I expected the "garden" mode to focus on words I'm getting wrong / taking more time with, but that isn't the case for me. It's not a huge complaint but I'd prefer less of a randomized approach as it seems that I'm getting bad word selections as a result. I think it's best when it simply quizzes you on everything you've done, but it seems to have a cap of 99 words at a time.

I've also noticed that if you type faster then the program can load the audio clip of the previous word the counter at the bottom stops and you are no longer being timed. If this happens either pause and unpause or continue entering answers normally as it eventually starts counting down again.

This is very neat. I think it does have some potential. However, personally I find Facebook integration to be annoying. I wish that there could be an iphone app or android app that I could play with this on.

Just an extra tidbit of information since this thread seems to be inclusive of all language learning programs / methods:

For those learning Spanish: http://www.studyspanish.com has been a useful tool for me and I would greatly recommend looking in to acquiring Spanish with Michel Thomas.

I've found that for Romance and West Germanic languages that Rosetta Stone goes at an agonizingly slow pace and feels quite tedious. If you're considering Rosetta Stone for Spanish, French, German, or Italian (just the more popular choices), I'd highly recommend looking at Michel Thomas as it is cheaper and focuses on the meat of the language and supplement with foreign films with English subtitles.
