They even both have the exchange symbol in them with Jiao1 being exchage and jiao3 being dumpling. oh well just gotta keep trying till i can recognize the tone diffrence.
Edit 1: ugh... now having same problem with You2 and You3 I have a problem with the Mandarin pronunciation - the younger girl is often inaccurate in her pronunciations compared to the male and the older woman, who seem to be fine.
Also, approaching the number 2 spot quickly!

For Japanese, is there any courses that help me to learn the hiragana characters? Edit: Got PM'd, thanks

I would suggest two ways: 1. Poll. What feature should be next? What is the most annoying thing on the website? Did memrise help you so far? yadayada. 2. Write suggestions in the thread. After a certain day in the future, which I will tell one or two weeks before, I will collect them all and a) insert them into an extrapoll or b) just collect them.
Number 1 would be my favourite way to go, as polls usually tend to be a lot less stuffed with doubled or useless comments you'd have to sort out later. If somebody feels like he / she desperately needs to add sth to the suggested answers, it can still be posted in the thread while still kinda preventing being flooded by multiple suggestions.

Is Memrise down right now? I have it bookmarked and its not loading, even though other internet pages are (obviously... cause I'm posting here...).
Also, if I didn't post it before, THANK YOU for this site. It's so wonderful. I love learning like this, it really makes it fun.

I really wish somebody would add grammar into the mix as well. You can learn endless vocabulary but have no idea how to use it in Korea, unless you are living there.

wow this is pretty cool! just started using to keep up with my German

Just wondering if anyone is learning tagalog?
I'm not sure of it yet, but I'm sure there is a benefit to two learners chatting.

Does anyone know if they plan on adding short sentences as exemple? Even just one sentence per word would help greatly I think, and wouldn't be fundamentally hard to add.
Also, does anyone know about a "good" list for traditional Chinese? By good I mean: -simple vocab for everyday use (I don't care about learning how to say "calcification", I want words for simple actions, food, transport, express simple feelings, etc) -a lot of words -no bugs/mistakes
Until now I have used the Far East series, but it doesn't have so many words. It's also spread across many different lists, which makes the watering process a little bit more tedious. I'd still recommend this series for any beginner, its pretty awesome. Also, TOCFL is pretty good, but has some quite "irrelevant" vocabulary. Thanks!

Still using memrise since I saw this thread and it's the best free vocab website I've used. Thanks TL and memrise
Also, encouraging sentences showing contexts for words would be great. I saw someone's meme for the word even to be an even number when I'm 99% sure it's more along the lines of meaning "even though". Worst part was people had thumbed it up...

I guess we may as well start posting our feedback now then? Once enough people reply we can add polls for what's the most important.
Feedback for Memerise.
I’ve been using the site since this thread started, and built up enough feedback to hopefully be helpful. Overall a great site, and I love it and tell everyone about it.
Slow connections:
Probably my main problem with memrise comes from me having a slow connection (I’m living in China, and picked the wrong ISP). Often I will try and water my plants, and it will take a long time to load. So I click away and do something else, click back, it’s still not ready, click away, then a minute later I’ve missed my first word.
Any of the following would be great: 1: A loading bar, so you know how long you’ll be waiting. 2: Instead of starting straight away, give us a ‘ready?’ or ‘go!’ button to confirm we’re there. 3: Make the page flash/play a sound, or otherwise get our attention.
Another problem for slow internet connections is that it often seems to take a lot of clicks to get where you want to be, or to get through a session if you have multiple gardens. It would be great to have a (pick all gardens and all flowers that are wilting) button. Or a way to customise your homepage, decide which gardens you want to prioritise appearing on the front page.
I don’t know if it is feasible, but an offline version would also be wonderful, and I’d be very happy to pay for it.
New users:
For me, Memrise has come at the perfect time: I spent last year teaching in China, just working on my speaking in free time. This year I decided to knuckle down and learn the characters, and was making slow progress until I found your site. It’s made a huge difference and I love it. For others it’s probably not so ideal.
I tried to introduce a friend to memrise, a teacher who has been here a long time. He started and then left. He had two main complaints:
The first was that there was no way for him to jump in. He knows at least 1000 Chinese Characters, and was sad that he had to go back to basics – it didn’t seem worth it to him to be drilled on stuff he already knew. If it was possible to add lists or characters as ‘already learnt’ I think a lot of people would appreciate this.
The second was that he got bombarded by emails from the site. Now for me this isn’t a big deal – actually the early high fives encouraged me. But for some the email inbox is a sacred domain, so giving people clear options about how many emails to receive straight away, instead of having to edit the settings, is probably a good idea, as you do send a lot of emails.
Mems
I created a couple of mems, which on reflection weren’t any good at all. I’d love to delete them but can’t find out how. Of course mems help the site, and it would be a shame if good ones went for whatever reason, so you could say that any which get 10 up votes are public and can only be deleted by site owners.
Testing
When you are answering the meaning in English you are flashed the pinyin on completion, which is great. But when you are answering with the pinyin you aren’t given the English. I would really like to be able to see it.
I’ve been having a bit trouble with words which have the same character. Some pairs it only seems to accept one, so it’s 50/50 each time. Another pair accepts either, which means I only land up practicing one.
There seems to be some bug with certain characters. Most frequently when I'm taught a new word, some characters won't display, either just showing a square or a bolded B.
I’d like a way to mark certain words as ‘troublesome’. Often there is a word I’m half guessing each time, particularly if it is similar to another. If I could mark such words as troublesome, and have a special session where I just review these (not impacting their main algorithm) it would be nice. I guess I could get words deliberately wrong If I’m not sure on them, but that goes slightly against the gaming spirit.
Overall interface:
A ‘what’s new’ page would be cool, as there have been some significant changes recently which came as a surprise: e.g now ‘almost’ counts as a fail towards your correct percentage, and there’s a new time attack style test where answers start disappearing.
The site is visually very attractive and elegant, but the gardens themselves are slightly disappointing. The plants just aren’t good looking or interesting, which seems like a missed trick. Having a beautiful garden to view after some hard studying would be cool. Or even an expansive field with your various gardens and other peoples too. Would be a nice incentive to learn words over drilling the same ones again and again, which a lot of the top leader board people seem to do. In the far future it could even be expanded with different areas, so your garden becomes your own memory palace.
New additions.
I really like the new pages which let you study countries and capitals and the Chinese Politburo Standing Committee. Both are things I want to have memorised. With the countries adding a map to the testing would make it amazing. With the party members I’d like a wider range of pictures of the same person, so you get used to recognising the person, instead of that specific picture.
Non-English learners
Although this is probably a way away, my girlfriend would love to use the site to study English. Changing the whole site to Mandarin might take a while, but she wanted me to tell you.
Hope all that helps, and thanks again for the site

I'm currently learning Spanish, but the words do not check for accents (ie. "el puré" is right but so is "el pure" according to memrise). I find this highly frustrating, because after some time I sometimes forget where exactly the accent used to be, or I simply learn the accent at the wrong place and it never notifies me of that. Is there a way to make it check for accents? If not, I'd really like that option, as I am simply learning "wrong words".

I'm learning spanish. I'm half French, so if some spanish guy learning french wants to practice and the other way around pm me

Just signed up as TL-Quails. I'll be doing quite a few languages. Have decided to start with basic sets, even in languages I know if they have gendered articles, because drilling those is always helpful.

I just signed up as TL-Cirno.
Any hints or tips on where to begin or what to do?
Clicked Korean and taken to http://www.memrise.com/topic/Korean/wordlists/ but do I just begin at the top basic one or is there anything better for a beginner with zero knowledge?

I've just checked and from what I can tell it registers accents that are in the wrong place but not missing accents. Until that gets fixed, you should probably try adding an accent wherever you are unsure to check.

Hey, have any of you created your own course? I just uploaded the excel sheet as suggested, and 43 of the words were ambiguous. It tells me to pick which one I want, but clicking it just takes me to that words page, and then I can't go back to the 'post upload page' at all.
Am I missing something, or is it not possible to upload a lot of words if they don't have just one meaning?

Congrats TL-Hotshizz for making the top 100!
You're an American living in France? are you studying there?
I've been lingering around near the bottom of the 100 for the past month since I've been trying to focus my time on learning French grammar -- have to put all those words to use eventually :p

Does anybody else currently have a problem with watering wilting plants? The dashboard shows me - for example - 1 wilting plant in wordlist X that I haven't yet learned completely. Instead of giving me the wilting plant to water, it redirects me to learning new words :/

That's just a weird bug... if you think it is all good, but one just popped up, go back to your dashboard, should clear it if there aren't any that really need watering, happens kind of often...

^^ Thanks! Yeah, actually my wife was a foreign exchange student in Ohio, then came back to the US with me for 5 years, and we just decided to go to France to see the other side of the family a bit... been here since April (when I created my TL account hence the France thing on there) As awesome as this list is, nothing is as good as just speaking that language every day! If you need any help with the grammar, let me know!

Ah ok, thanks, was just wondering if it was something common or on my end... I just quit and went back to the dashboard then always, as you said. Sometimes it needs to be refreshed several times to stop showing the wrong words.
