We'll try and fix that soon. I figure you guys know more about game design than pretty much anyone else, so can I throw a general question out to the floor. Our leaderboards are getting pretty intimidating - I have a hard time getting in the top 50, even on the daily list. Do you have any ideas for how we could restructure or scope them to be friendlier to new users?
I think there were some good ideas thrown out before, but I'd like to add a few more... I know right now the word lists can be made by anyone, but I think if you get more official ones, or at least officially sponsored and verified lists, like the French or German demo lists, it would be neat to attach an image or badge or something to them that you unlock as you complete the list. Take for example here on TL, as you post more and better posts, your icon changes from an SCV to a probe, drone, zergling, marine, etc etc, (look to the little yellow icon next to each persons name, there are actually a number of various pictures) it is a visual representation of your accomplishment and dedication to the site.
I also don't think that you should take away the capability of farming a little, because if that keeps people coming back, then awesome for you all. Maybe limit it to five or ten runs through a list per day, but keep the points, the farmers will get bored eventually, or they wont... if every day your top ten or ten of the top twenty are farmers, then maybe it will need reconsidering, but I know at first I would run through the list every time I harvested new plants just to get myself really sure of everything (doing French Italian, German, Dutch, and English all at the same time, and three of the languages were new to me, so I wanted to make sure I was really capturing everything) and getting a few thousand extra points was neat. Now I have too many words, and I am quite confident for the most part with what I have learned, but every once in a while I still run through just to test myself.
Last point. I think that the ten or fifteen correct in a row thing is awesome, but it would be neat if you got like 50 bonus points or 100 points or maybe just an achievement to say you did it. Also, instead of just 15 correct questions in a row, maybe have a question for Fifteen different words in a row, etc.
TL;DR Some kind of badge for completed word lists, allow farming, but limit the number of times per 24 hours you can run through a specific wordlist before points are cut, achievements and points for #correct in a row.

All i'm hoping is that by being top 5 on the days i play, that bomber will finally win a code S. This is the equivalent of me praying
EDIT: to the guy above, how do you know if someone is farming or not? What if other people have much different learning strategies to you?
Personally my daily routine is:
Morning: I wake up, run through my word list, and because i have more than 100 words, i have to do it twice for it to do all the words. So it goes a 99 word list, then a random short one (whats up with these?), and then I do another 99 words, to get the ones i didn't encounter the first time round. So thats just the warm up part. At this point, i learn between 20-40 words. Then i go back to do the word list once.
Afternoon, i come back and harvest the words. then i do the 99 word list twice, so i get all the old words and the new words.
Then usually, if i see that i'm 6th or 7th or something, I will farm to get to the top 5. I don't see the problem with that. If anything, its just reinforcing your memory and probably explains why i haven't achieved a percentage south of 100% in a while.

Hey gregdetre,
I would really really like to have a way (directly on site) of seeing all the words in a wordlist. I'm only interested in the most basic words atm and there are several wordlists with assorted words and i'd like to ignore those instead learning 10 new words and seeing the next 10 are the most obscure things making me delete the entire wordlist. Maybe even add option of hiding/marking wordlists with comments so you don't have to browse all of them again when you want to search for a new wordlist.
Would be also awesome to view monthly top 100 X language learners and see what wordlists everybody is learning (past month or lifetime) and clicking on a name to see stats like wordlists ordered after time of planting / how much it took to harvest all the words in that particular wordlist/ total known words at that time(at harvest)/ average total words learned/day(at each harvest).

It's not an ideal solution, to be sure, but it works well enough.

Great website, I've been doing it at least once a day (7 new words) since a week ago. It started off easy (so few words to memorise) but now it's getting harder and harder!

Not sure if this has been mentioned before since I haven't read the whole thread, but it'd be great if when you make a mistake for it show what you wrote and the correct answer on the same page. This way, you get to see exactly what you did wrong and how to correct it.
Awesome website! I've been using it a lot to memorize vocab words for my Korean class and it's been really helpful!

I don't really see a problem with farming either, if you want to do a list 10 times a day that's fine. I used to do that same style, but now I am up to over 800 words, and there is no way ever I could have enough time to do them all, so I just stopped, unless I am really feeling like I'm missing something. But I agree, if that's how you learn, awesome, because the whole point is learning new words.
Anyway, there were some people that were really just farming. Less than 20 words learned all time and top 5... but that's fine, that's why I think they should have a points list and a words list...

Would be interesting to know why they are farming that hardcore. Whether its really just because they want to be on top of the leaderboard of whether its really their way of learning. I am not sure if he reads this topic but I am looking at you TL-swAMi ^^ . This is not meant as an attack, I dont really care that much about the whole farming thing, it just baffels me
Edit: Oh and I think adding mems that others find helpful should definitely give some points, adding content for others should always be rewarded in some way I think.

Not sure if this bug has been reported already: If you're asked to type a word, and you enter the word in English, it will stop the timer. This can give time to people to look up the word on google, or a dictionary, etc.

But why would someone do that? The whole point is to learn a language effectively. Even if you just wanted to earn points, it'd be quicker just to skip over the word you don't know.

Yeah, "farming" like that kinda defeats the whole point of spaced repetition though, which is one of the big parts of memrise. The point is, that once your plants are in your garden, you shouldn't have to revise them except when they're wilting, because memrise only wilts a plant when it predicts you're about to forget that word. The point to all this is that you can spend the minimum time learning the maximum number of words, because you don't waste extra seconds testing words you are already 100% confident on.

how do you know when you're 100% confident on the word? Confidence and instant recognition only comes through sustained practice.
I'm certainly not advocating farming, that is, continuous repetition of a small number of words, but if you have over 100 words, i think you certainly should be doing your word list more than one time just to somewhat ensure that you are capturing every word and working towards instant recognition.
In any case, having two leaderboards would be good, but again, the main aim should be learning words to benefit yourself, with the secondary aim of promoting STBomber

Im trying to learn the letter symbols, because I think it is the first step to learning korean because otherwise its just recognizing symbols with no meaning which I think will slow me down. anyway IM trying to find a good thing to associate the letters with. Its difficult to associate with phenomes because I honestly dont know the phenomes. maybe this is just the downside to self teaching.
Perhaps we should make a korean learning skype channel?

Aha. Firstly, the purpose of spaced repetition is to make sure you are "capturing every word", making sure you can recognise them with close to 100% accuracy, but with minimal time investment. This avoids you going through your full word list, so you can spend the freed time to learn other words instead. It is, to pull some numbers from the air, the difference between taking 2 minutes to fully learn a word, and taking 4 minutes - when you're learning the thousands of words it takes to achieve native fluency in most languages, that's a difference of hundreds of hours.
Your point about instant recognition is more debatable, but I believe flash cards are not a good way to achieve this. It is more effective to learn instant recognition through contextual practice (listening and reading to full sentences/stories in your target language). After all, flash cards will only train you to recognise words in isolation, but instant recognition is primarily useful in context - when you're listening to fluent speech, for instance. I primarily use flash cards to avoid the use of a dictionary when I'm practicing reading and listening to Chinese.

Gregdetre,
I don't know if this has been said before but the Russian font looks weird. A и looks more like an italic u making me think it was ц. I know very little Russian so it may actually be common but I suggest using a more easily recognisable font to display Cyrillic.
Edit: Found this
![[image loading]](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c0/Special_Cyrillics.png)
The following table shows the differences between the upright and italic Cyrillic letters of the Russian alphabet. Italic forms significantly different from their upright analogues, or especially confusing to users of a Latin alphabet, are highlighted.
Oh those were just italicised.... Please change it to the standard one because it confusing. Or let us choose between the 2.
Thanks lot for your work on the site.

Just started this, should be a fun way to brush up on my german and spanish and maybe actually finally start Russian like i've wanted to for a long time.

TL-Rimstalker, clawed my way up today to about place 7000, doing Spanish so far, but will probably soon go for some specific English dictionaries, if there are any.
Is anyone else having trouble uploading pictures?

Strongly agree with your contextual practice bit: My mum told me to make sure I know how to use them in sentences so I end up practicing that as well
