It does no good to anyone if that awesome desktop you posted doesn't come with a source! If you've forgotten the source, use a website such as TinEye to identify the source (or to find a higher resolution of the image). That measly thirty seconds you spend linking the source can make a lot of people happy, so there's no reason not to.
2) Remember to use the "Upload Image" function on the top-right corner of your posting box when posting your wallpaper (as displayed in the below spoiler). + Show Spoiler [Elaboration] +
This one is important; if you don't use the resize tool, your image may be cut off and will not be fully displayed, and that makes it difficult to appreciate your desktop. The Upload feature resizes the image to follow TL's format, so please use that tool every time you wish to upload a wallpaper. It's easy to do and makes everything more legible.
3) When posting multiple wallpapers in a single post, please put them in spoiler tags to keep the page from overflowing with images. + Show Spoiler [Elaboration] +
Simply put, if you post multiple wallpapers without spoiler tags, you're cluttering up the thread unnecessarily. You may have a bunch of desktops that you think are super cool, but it's pretty annoying to other people when they're forced to scroll down for five minutes to see other posts. Be respectful, and put your wallpapers in spoiler tags to save space. Obviously, if you're only posting a single image, feel free to dispense with the tags.
Many people like to use the Rainmeter program to customize their desktops. While it's not required, if you have a particularly awesome Rainmeter setup, it'd be great if you explained how you got that setup, since odds are you'll be asked about it anyway. For those who don’t know what Rainmeter is, or would like to use it for their own desktops, please follow this link to reach the Rainmeter website.
Many people have shown distaste at some of the female-focused wallpapers in previous threads, due to the suggestiveness they present. Most of the complaints stem from wallpapers with anime-style girls on them, and I agree that some cross the line. However, I feel this also applies to the various wallpapers with real-life women on them, since to discard the anime-style while preserving the real is setting a double standard that we can do without. Therefore, this and subsequent threads are to be treated as “safe for work” (SFW). This means that any wallpapers that exhibit excessive bare skin (defined as bare breasts, asses, or any other sort of pornographic exposure) or risqué poses (defined as convenient censoring of the genitals, blatant panty shots, or similar things) are forbidden from being posted without spoiler tags.
This doesn't mean that you can't post girl wallpapers; I'm not a prude by any means, and I'm sure that all (most?) of us are adult enough to handle stuff like that. However, please show some restraint for what may and may not be appropriate in a workplace setting, and use spoiler tags for NSFW material.
6) There is to be no arguing about the merits of anyone's wallpapers, especially those that feature anime-style characters. + Show Spoiler [Elaboration] +
ALL discussions of the sort that have occurred in previous threads have only served to start unnecessary controversy and hostility. Nothing is gained from those sort of debates. Warnings and bans have been handed out each time, which speaks for the productivity of such talks. Therefore, no such arguments shall occur about whether or not a user's desktop has merit, and this goes double for arguing about the display of anime-style wallpapers. You've been warned.
There have been some slight issues with people continuing to post in earlier desktop threads, even though the thread for the current month has been made. In lieu of having to bother a mod to ask people to direct conversation to the current thread, I'd like to make it known in the rules. When a new month's thread has been created, please direct all desktop and Rainmeter discussion to the new month's thread, instead of posting in the prior thread. If you have a specific question about someone's wallpaper or Rainmeter setup from a previous thread, PM the person instead of making a post about it in said previous thread. It helps to avoid clutter and confusion as to which thread to post in.
As an addendum, I post new desktop threads based on KST (Korean Standard Time, the timezone that TeamLiquid has adopted. This means that I will post the next month's thread around 00:00 <month> 1st KST. For those outside of Korea (the majority of TL users), it will appear that I've posted the thread too early. No, I haven't; I'm simply basing the cycle around KST.
Finally, TL user Mortal has composed a guide for crafting the ideal desktop. Be sure to give it a read, if you'd like.
This will be a detailed and organized guide of how, as well as why, you should modify your desktop. There will be links to separate websites that rely on YOU to do the research and image-searching. As you do this more, you will get better and more well-versed in what it is you should look for and how to find it. Practice makes perfect!
Websites
tineye.com - Search for wallpapers you want. See a desktop without a source? Don't ask, just check on TinEye! If it yields no results, try the following:
wallbase.cc - A collection of wallpapers rivaling any source on the Internet. If TinyEye does not give you what you seek, search something in the photo on wallbase (blur, lightning, cake, sexy, etc.).
rainmeter.net - The first step towards success. This tool is vastly more user friendly and versatile than any other available (more detail in following sections).
deviantart.com - A great source for wallpapers, Windows themes, skins, and icons.
stardock.com - A dock to replace the Windows toolbar (my personal preference).
cdartdisplay.com - An amazing program used to do exactly what it says, display album art. Customizable skins and displays.
foobar2000.org - A media player superior to WMP, WinAmp, and iTunes.
dafont.com - The stock fonts for both Windows and Mac are terrible. Get some shiny new ones!
Lomo - This method of photography has caught on in wallpapers. It allows for a mellow vibe and lends itself to a more laid back feeling, like pictures from years past.
Blur - Pretty self-explanatory. Relatively simply put, it's images of colors blurred together. Use these in minimalist and simple desktops.
Resolutions
Using an image with a smaller resolution than that of your screen looks absolutely atrocious. NEVER do this. You will notice a big difference in the quality and appeal of your desktop if you change this immediately.
Square monitors - While absolutely awful in every way, shape, or form, these monitors are highly used. Refer to these resolutions if you're looking for a square monitor/desktop/wallpaper.
(Some laptop resolutions will not match these. CHECK FOR YOURSELF!)
More to be added. If you have questions, toss me a PM. (TL user Mortal)
The Do's and Don’ts of Desktops
As mentioned previously, NEVER use a picture that is below your desktop's resolution. The loss of pixels and quality is an absolute sin in the world of customization. If you can't find a proper resolution, it wasn't meant to be. Also, making an image that's larger than your monitor SMALLER will never make it better quality. Your monitor only has so many pixels. Shrinking an image doesn't magically make more appear.
Whenever possible, avoid ANYTHING stock. This can be said for Rainmeter skins, program icons, program settings, and OS themes. Your desktop is your own space, so make it reflect that in every way possible!
Laziness will reward you with sub-par satisfaction and visuals. If you spend hours a day on your computer, shouldn't it be as beautiful as it can be? You wouldn't just throw pictures around onto your walls arbitrarily, would you? Unless you have no sense of internal decor, and if you're arguing that, you're beyond help here...
NEVER hesitate to ask questions. If you've expended all resources provided in the aforementioned sections, there is no shame in admitting you don't know something. We are all new to things at some point (even me)!
Regardless of what anyone (including and especially me) tells you, however you want your desktop is exactly how it should be. If you want a color scheme, theme and icon setup that someone doesn't agree with, that's their opinion, and you have yours. Discuss it, and don't make anything personal.
Consistency is key! If you use a gray or black theme for Win7, make your wallpaper, desktop, and icons reflect that. If you can make a cohesive product, it will not only make you feel accomplished, but it will look rather sexy!
Be resourceful. If you think you can't find what you're looking for, you probably haven't tried hard enough. There are thousands of themes, skins, and wallpapers at your disposal using the links above. Get good at using them and you will be rewarded!
Less is more. Despite what you may think, having a ton of meters, clocks, etc. is absolutely unnecessary. If you have a simple date/time/weather display, you don't need anything else (unless you use a laptop and would like a battery display). Minimalism is in the now, and simplicity is (simply) beautiful.
RED FLAG: This is by far the single most important rule for everyone. Never, EVER have icons, files, or program-launching icons on your desktop! This is the most common and upsetting problem people have. They're unsightly and unnecessary.
As of now, that is all the information necessary to get your desktop from stock and ugly to personal and awesome! I am always accepting questions, suggestions, and extra information. Thanks to Aeres for making the desktop threads on a monthly basis, thanks to all the people on all of the sites mentioned for making their content and allowing all of us to use what they have given us.

random question, but how do you people navigate stuff on your desktop if you don't leave your files and your icons on your desktop? tried fiddling around with rainmeter in the past but i realised how inconvenient it was to lack folders and icons..

I just have a generic Olivia Wilde background. but the cool part is I have Zmatrix running in the background so that the matrix is always running down the screen with Olivia Wilde reflected through it. I'll edit my post when I get home to my desktop and show a picture but I enjoy it a lot. And you don't really get the full effect from a still shot.

Oh.. i see. watched through the video already. but im a little confused, when some people post their desktops in the thread, there are some of them with absolutely clean desktops and just rainmeter stuff. Is it just that they minimised the dock to make it cleaner?

For some reason I have a ton of wallpapers I like for my 1900x1200 screen but I have a harder time finding good ones for my smaller screen... I guess the quality just shows much better when there's nothing else on the screen to destroy the look.
Going for a progressively colder look... next month I'll probably have something with ice.

I keep stuff I actually need available on my taskbar, there's Rainmeter launcher skins, you can even make them invisible until you mouseover. You can hide your taskbar. There's various ways to keep a clean desktop and still find stuff easily.
In fact, it's easier, back when I used icons, I left everything on my desktop for when I'd need it, and could never find anything with 50 icons to dig through. Quick search is much easier, or windows key + "r" to run.

So easy to organize everything. In XP I had my own folders that organized everything on my desktop but it's much more convenient now.

You can autohide the dock so it only comes up when you mouseover, personally I just found a rocketdock skin and icon pack that fits in well with my rainmeter stuff and my background. I keep my downloads/documents folders and desktop icon on there along with frequently used programs like steam and starcraft, just search for everything else.
I've just started messing around with rainmeter a bit for the last couple of weeks and this is the first desktop were I feel I could keep it for a while. I'll 100% be adding/changing things in the future, but may as well post it now. The idea behind it is I want a very simple combination of picture/skins, clean, crisp, and easy to navigate as it says in the desktop guide in the OP
Clock/Date, System Vitals and RSS feed (BBC news) from the '2019' rainmeter skin pack. Notes skin (Quotes) from the 'Space' rainmeter skin pack. There's nothing special about this particular 'notes' skin, it's just one that I had modified already and so put it on my current desktop. Taskbar is the ObjectDock (free version) as in the OP.
For someone asking earlier, I have the normal windows taskbar on 'auto-hide', so when I touch the bottom of the screen with the cursor, the taskbar comes up as usual.
Perhaps I'll have a complete desktop by the December thread ^_^
Yay, as I pointed out in last month's thread; my rainmeter stopped working so I had to fix it... Now, with the new thread I can finally show the results, yay!
The rainmeter skin = ABP
Top left are the shortcuts (because we hate files on the desktop), after that some RSS feeds (note how I carelessly and coincidentally had Team Liquid open) and underneath an imagesideshow.
Top center are a clock and direct-google-searchbar.
Top right; local weather, beneath it a tab with agenda/to do lists and on the bottom right some PC-info.
I made this when I was really bored and hanging with my team Someone was watching that Arnold Schwartzeneggar movie where he says "You're fired" and then kills the guy, and I instantly imagined this Arnold instead for some reason.

It SHOULD work on any widescreen resolution, unfortunately I haven't tried yet so I can't say for sure. It could just look realllly bad on anything that isn't 1920:1080 or anything with the same ratio of 16 : 9.

I have a question, anyone here with a girl on his desktop has a gf/wife?
Yes. Been married 3 years. Coming up on number 4 pretty soon, and this has been my desktop ever since I saw it in one of these threads :D
Don't you guys feel like it's cheating? At least peek in private, no? Is your girl comfortable when she is around seeing some half-naked ass as your wallpaper?
No. It's not even remotely equivocal to cheating. Looking at porn isn't even cheating. Cheating is when you go out, bang some person then come home and fall asleep next to your girlfriend. + Show Spoiler [expanded] +
I usually don't have naked women as part of my wallpaper rotation (fucks up the productivity of my day) but I wouldn't date someone that was so easily offended or uncomfortable around a wallpaper. For one thing I can imagine the sex would just be terrible and awkward.
What you're asking is completely unrelated to the framework you put the question in. Is a inappropriate fantasy with pictures of a woman going to cause trouble with your relationship or scare off someone you want a relationship with? Yup. But a picture of a hot girl because she looks hot isn't supposed to be some deeper thing. It's your wallpaper (or in my case weekly rotation, I have a program to change backgrounds every 20 minutes) because you want to look at something pretty. Like a waterfall or a rainbow or a great rack lovable face.
Look short and sweet- I don't date quiet and embarrassed girls I date ones that ride their own motorcycles and aren't too picky about little things like wallpapers. edit- i don't mean any undue hostility by my tone, it's a bit much to compare a picture to cheating.
Anyway this is my wallpaper for the next 20 minutes

Ya unfortunately I'm not sure how to adjust it properly to scale since sc2 would just get rid of the space on the sides and let the menu take up more space. I'll see if I can find a way to make it so it works to some degree on non 16 : 9.

Wow...that's incredible. Who are the players? And do you have more like this?

as a terran player I can only say poor newly constructed tanks, they'd never find their way out of that base arrangement T_T
New Mac user here.... I miss the PC already, there aren't as many inspiring desktop mods (i.e. there are a ton of rainmeter awesomness). Does any one here know any inspiring mac mods/setups?

Geek Tools is the rainmeter equivalent, and magnifique is the tool for theming I believe, icons are easily moddable too, just google some instructions. Hopefully that's enough to get you started. Drag thing is a dock I found useful when I had a mac.as well.

Thanks, but this is exactly what I mean. I checked out Magnifique and the developer of that is pretty much gone, his website's not even up any more and you can't download any of the themes. Most mac theme/gui sites seem to have disappeared after 2009. http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/shapeshifter

Shameless self-plug, but I made some blogs about similar high-res screenshots (example) a while ago:
My god. That's awesome. I'm assuming the photo is from MLG Orlando where it was noted he put in more hours than anyone practicing.
With as much as I despise the design imbalances in the game right now, namely Terran ones, I can NEVER not be a Boxer fan when he's that kind of person. FUCK YEAH

Holy mother, does this all really happen at the same time?? I got nerdchills when watching that painting (no it's not a picture anymore, it's a piece of art)

not sure what you want... like another poster said it's just a white/grey wallpaper with some textures. unless you want the rainmeter config? in which case that's a slightly bit more annoying for me.
So I want the white/grey wallpaper with some textures. I'm a wannabe nerd, but it looks awesome and I want it
It's a Phyrexian Crusader from Magic: The Gathering. I've been using this one recently because the image reminds me of something that happened in middle school. Not sure why, but I think I'll keep it as my background until I remember.

well you could probably just take multiple screenshots in pause mode (or something similar so it doesn't gray out, maybe time the screenshot key with replay time and restart again and again) and then just shop them together. but i'd assume there's an easier way x)

I think you can do it with the map editor, but I'm not sure about it because i've never used it.
It's been a while since I've contributed(seeing as almost 99% of the wallpapers I have come from these threads :>), but I finally have another one that I didn't steal from this thread! As such, time to share! ^__^
New wallpaper, probably going to keep it for most of winter.
Looks awesome and has the cold look I wanted. Plus I'm addicted to Skyrim for the next few weeks at the least.
My only qualm is that I can't find an awesome Rainmeter skin that looks great (bored of this one) and has all the functions I want; this one only shows temps for 4 cores max...kind of stupid but I'd like to have all 6. But it's mostly that I'm tired of how it looks.

I loved the original, but wanted something a little more "me". I edited it in ms paint, so I guess there's no source found on tineye The blank canvas is from: http://cl.ly/B1PC The quote is from his autobiography: http://boxerbiography.blogspot.com/
I made it myself, I have used as a refrence for the posture of the DT a scene from the campaign videos... you know the one with Kerrigan and th hydras?
I'm a minimalist at heart: this has been my desktop for months and months now (my previous desktop was a Colo II TvZ spread I pulled from TL a year ago or so).
source: http://i.imgur.com/HCrmP.png centered on a white bg (or simply search "501st Legion" if you don't like mine, IDK any more where I found this at first).
