Additionally, it'll most of the time discredit you in topic experts' eyes (unless we're talking about a forum where these experts discuss, ofc).

Really depends on the topic. Mathematics, sure. A reasonably intelligent person can learn many math topics a lot faster on the internet than in a classroom (hell, most advanced math at a lot of schools is “taught” by teachers who either can’t teach or even speak English (at least in the US) meaning that you learn almost entirely from the textbook anyway. Physics (and honestly a lot of sciences) can fall in the same boat, though as much as you move away from abstraction you also move toward stuff where hands-on things can be helpful (experiments etc.) Programming is learned online by lots of people, and people who do program often go online regularly to learn/remember how to do shit. Politics is tricky, because sure, you can learn political theory pretty easily that way, but it’s hard to get a real understanding of what people believe and why because of the internet’s sampling bias etc. Want to learn about politics? Volunteer for a campaign and spend some time going door-to-door. That said, most experts do at this point get most of their info from the internet, which, incidentally, is why nobody predicted the rise of Trump. Psychology is an infant science so you can definitely learn stuff on the internet, but half the time you’re better off just talking to people. There are plenty of fields that are harder to fake though. Medicine gets pretty hands-on, for instance. Writing well is best done with the help of real-live human beings. Religion you can get a good handle on theory, but you really need to spend time with adherents of whatever you’re studying. Romance you're really better off doing the opposite of whatever the internet says.

I'd agree that if you are a reasonably smart, determined person, you can probably learn a lot about mathematics online. Going to a (university) library is probably still a better idea, text books do actually work pretty well. What you don't learn is actually DOING maths. There is a large difference between knowing about maths, and doing maths. Knowing about maths is understanding proofs, knowing concepts, and understanding what other people do in maths. Actually doing maths is completely different. You need to rewire your brain in a very strange way to be able to think in a way that sucessfully doing math requires (I can greatly recommend it, though, it is amazing how it changes how you think about stuff.) The question at hand is do you actually want to be knowledgeable, or look knowledgeable to someone without any knowledge of what they are talking about. If it is the first, it is hard work. If it is the second, just learn a few big words related to the field and throw them around liberally. If you tell people that their problem is actually a special case of a classic problem of the topology of non-Riemannian hyperspheres , that has been solved by Lagrange via advanced methods of using manifolds in set-theory in 1913 (Lagrange-Theorem), and you are confident enough, a lot of people will probably believe that you know stuff about maths. (All of that was complete nonsense) If it is physics, just add "quantum" to stuff. People tend to get intimidated by that. Unless you say stuff like "Prayer as a scientific way of applied quantum mechanics" or "Quantum Mechanics proves that you have a soul", in that case you just look like a complete idiot. But apparently some people even believe those nutters, so i guess go for it anyways.

To be a expert in a research field, you first do ~5 years undergrad studies, ~3 years of PhD, and then a fair few more years before you can really call yourself an expert. All full time. And that is when you are constantly supervised and taught by other experts. Sitting alone and reading forums, trying to figure out what is reliable and what isn't from other random posters? You probably wont get there in a lifetime. You can of course learn SOMETHING, but probably not to a level where people should trust your call for important decisions. I think very few people would be impressed by something like "I know what I'm doing, trust me, I've been reading this on the internet", and mostly for good reasons. So many sources that will give you misleading information. Programming is potentially an exception in your list though, as that is very much learning by doing. Also not certain about politics, as even professional politicians are not to be trusted with important decisions. ![]()

I'd say just look for PC on the side of buildings and have a go.

Also, if there is a question in that post, I'm pretty sure you don't provide enough context for anyone to answer. Can you try to reformulate so that 1) there is a clear question. 2) there is context for us to understand the question. Context could be things like: a) Who sent you this message? b) Are you talking about the teamliquid forums? c) What did you do to trigger the "appropriate actions" to start with. d) What kind of response where you hoping for? e) Why do you think you didn't get the desired response? That kind of things. Right now it just looks like a lazy copy-paste, but I'm sure you can do better! Best of luck! - The Stupid Questions Thread.

Blizzard Forum Staff b) Are you talking about the teamliquid forums? StarCraft 2 Forums c) What did you do to trigger the "appropriate actions" to start with. dunno, they never told me, they appealed the ban previously because they found no record of trolling history back in April d) What kind of response where you hoping for? People have been having similiar experiences with Blizzard Activision and they've flocked to team liquid because of the shit quality they've been getting from Blizzards development team in the way they handle things. e) Why do you think you didn't get the desired response? the same kind of outrage that sparked the WoW Vanilla shutdown a few weeks ago

Is this just a whine about bnet forum moderation? What kind of response are you hoping for here in this thread? I'm very confused.

Initial question according to his first thread was : has anyone else had trouble with Blizzards Forum? As for answers ... I guess there are a few trolls that have also been banned over the years. Best advice is: stop trolling on the forums ? We could review your post history on the blizzard forum and tell you if it seems banworthy. Answer is probably yes considering the thread in april where you asked basically the same question. If you are looking for some comforting words from other banned accounts ... there are probably enough people on TL for you to find one or two.
