Hi guys, I know this is a selfish request, but I am hoping that you guys can help a longtime forum geezer out.
Could you please post famous / popular / your favorite gyroscope-based games for the iPhone, iPad, or Android Phone?
(My understanding is that a gyroscope-based game will involve rotational movement of the handheld for input, rather than just touch or linear motion)
Okay. Now I will try to explain what is going on. I apologize if the backstory seems a bit sparse or vague - there are a lot of things I can't talk about due to the nature and timing of my work.
Backstory - I currently work in a technology company that provides the Motion solutions to these handheld devices (such as smartphones, tablets, and gaming devices). We're actually one of the leaders in the field - competition is pretty fierce though.
Anyways, there are some major things going on in the company, and one of the things that came up was to be aware of what applications (i.e. gyroscope-enabled games) for these handheld devices were the most popular or most widely recognized (or just the best - hence your favorites!). The VP asked me today to do a market survey to find out this information - I agreed, and also mentioned that I'd ask my "colleagues" on a website I visit to help us out as well; after all, who better to ask about such a topic than the young, connected gaming crowd?
Your input will be used by our team to deliver ---------------------- (okay sorry I can't say this part - confidential >_<). I do want to emphasize that this is actually important for us, and if I'm unable to get some help here, I am 100% committed to digging for the information out of the apple and android marketplaces myself. The task even has a hard deadline of Friday that I am not allowed to miss.
Reward?? - Unfortunately I can't offer much in return (other than a promise that I intend on doing something decent for my 40,000th post - whenever that happens...)
But Maybe - What I actually can offer, is to (at the very least) talk to you about working in this industry if you're interested in motion-enabled solutions for consumer electronics. There are some pretty nice interface solutions in the pipeline that any of us would be able to appreciate (that I can't talk about unfortunately >_<)
Thank you for your help. I can't express in words how much this will help us

(Mods, I hope you'll let me ask for help during a period of a few days even though this might possibly infringe on forum rules)
edit: I'll be happy to talk about the industry in this thread, though I surely won't be able to answer everything.

>Firepaw any raching game is a good point! (time to scrawl through the app store tomorrow...) (and doodle jump sounds really familiar)
Thanks for the input!

Swivel (my favorite, very smart puzzle game),
Angry Birds (really famous indeed, which I spent months just to accomplish all 3 stars :D),
Tiny Wings (really popular right now and having much fun playing it). I don't buy games that much so I just buy some when I'm bored

Edit: Oh gyroscope, sorry nvm

Angry birds? i dunno i have it on iphone. pretty fun
|
How does a leading company in the field not know what the top games on these smarhphones are?
|
I wish I could help you out here with some good ipod touch/iphone apps, but my Ipod most likely doesn't have many "Gyroscope" like games (other than a few racers)
Actually, I do remember "Jelly Car" to be pretty fun, so you might want to check that out.

Abduction on android is a great example of a game utilizing the gyroscope to its fullest. And there's ofcourse the racing/karting games.
There's other stuff then games too, for example most virtual/augmented reality apps (layar for one) utilize the gyroscope.

I don't know swivel, but how do angry birds and tiny wings use gyroscope? Do you know what gyroscope is?

To be honest, any time a game has the option of both gyroscope and touch controls (for instance, Doodle Jump and BIT.TRIP BEAT BLITZ), I find myself inevitably preferring the touch-based controls. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever really enjoyed a game that only employs the gyroscope. The touch-based controls offer significantly higher accuracy and don't rely on the weird "acceleration" that gyroscopes use, where the further you tilt the faster you go, and thus the closer you get to your target the less you should tilt, and so when things get fast it's almost impossible to be precise. Gyroscope controls are also significantly harder to use on the go, when you end up in all sorts of funny positions trying to get the damn phone level, and then of course you hit a bump in the road and lose everything.
I don't know if that's the sort of answer you were looking for, but it's honest.

The company's original focus is on hardware. As the industry matures, it's become increasingly necessary to provide complete solutions. We talk to the Apples and Samsungs of the world, but the actual applications that run on these devices is two or more steps removed from where we are.
In a nutshell, our day-to-day expertise is more low-level, while these mobile apps are the highest level of abstraction on the device
I hope this answers your question.

Thanks for the thorough response! Def going to look for such augmented reality apps like the ones you mentioned.

No worries. I actually totally agree (despite being in such a company) - I was never particularly fond of Motion input for very competitive gaming - as you say, the input is way too finicky. In fact, I don't own a single motion-enabled game LOL.
I think it's natural for the more competitive and serious types (regarding gaming) to prefer more precise controls (reminds me of preferring a mouse and keyboard over a xbox controller for FPS games - though this is more of a complexity issue than a precision one)
On the other hand, the casual player (who might not even describe themselves as a "gamer") might prefer the more intuitive controls over the precise but sometimes convoluted method of input.

Most certainly Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2.
Hey haji, instead of your insider information about your rather mysterious company, how about instead you enlighten us in either:
A) How the fuck you got 30,000 (and inspired Kona ^^) ? B) Why did you decide to ban yourself? C) If you banned yourself how can you still post? D) Who was it that decided to make your post-count go backwards? E) What's your CAMBRIDGE Story? Oh, do tell
Any (or preferably all) answers would be considered suitable payment
(it's actually kinda funny, whenever I'm tired with my friends I say "Sleep is for the week, and I am week." But no-one gets it :[ )

Love Cube Runner I spent weeks playing it haha, Can't remember anything else but will edit/post more when i remember! good luck sir!

It's the probably the best type of game to utelize the gyroscopic sensor.

I know a friend of mine who's been playing Air Penguin quite a bit (iPod Touch 4th gen)... it's actually really hard LOL xD

Haha sure. It's been a while since I actively interacted with the community here so I'll be happy to answer questions. I'll do that when I get home though
For now, I'll direct you to my "ask me anything" blog entry. http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=154099

tilt to live on the iphone/ipod touch is one of the most addictive games for me atm
this game definitely has that try again factor to it.

I actually really like taxiball on the Iphone/touch. It's like if you mixed marble madness/supermonkey ball with crazy taxi.

Alright, here we go.
A) A lot of live reporting into the wee hours of the night during my college years. Also, my studies usually meant I was on the computer 10 hours a day, so there was a lot of intermittent posting going on (probably averaged like 40-50 posts a day even without live reporting - I was reading nearly every single thread on TL back in 2006-2007, when things were still quite tame around here wrt traffic)
B) Stress and being overworked, both as admin and as a gradstudent.
C) I was unbanned by the staff after a few days.
D) Sonuvbob's magic!
E) Not really sure what aspect of life @ Cambridge you're interested in hearing about. Let's just saw I was focused more on rowing than my studies there (though I still managed to finish 3rd in my program iirc)
