Crisis in Japan - Page 58

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

To my understanding they are cooling the reactors with water. Doing that creates slightly radioactive steam. The radioactive steam pressure is rising. Worst case scenario they vent it into the air, hence a radioactive leak.

I just saw an interview with a japanese nuclear scientist explaining all this stuff. The number one reactor is having over pressurization and they are venting the pressure via an airshaft or sth. To reduce radioactive material leaking they installed filters in the airshaft. Apparently the radiation levels around the faclity are twice as much as normal and still rising...

What about the cooling itself? NHK is saying the water's gone from 30 degrees to 100+. Aside from the pressure, they're saying they're not able to cool the reactor right now. Sorry if this is a stupid question; I'm really confused about the whole reactor thing.

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information and random events popping up. 30 minutes ago facility scientists were saying everything is fine, and now suddenly there are multiple problems popping up and a second facility starting to malfunction. All news outlets report the US delivered coolant hours ago, but the US is denying that. It's hard to figure out where this is going right now.

Also, doesn't thedeadhaji live in Japan? I haven't seen him post since hearing about the earthquake, I hope he's okay. He already said he is ok...

Also 1000x greater inside the control room is far far far different than 1000x greater in the surrounding evacuation area. Only 8x greater at the main gate of the facility is a huge drop-off.

2310: More from the Tokyo Electric Power Company: It says the ability to control pressure in some of the reactors at Fukushima-Daini has been lost. Pressure is stable inside the reactors, but rising in the containment vessels, a company spokesman says. just wondering what do the 2310 and whatever numbers actually _mean_ ?

Matsushima is commonly regarded as one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, mostly because of a whole bunch of picturesque islands. I hope the people who live there are alright, but it seems unlikely that they remain unscathed.
