Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

But why aren't they using offshore supply boats/tugboats or fire boats for that purpose, when the plant seems to be right by the seaside? These boats have enourmous capacity for blowing water, and many of them are ABC-resistant as well. ![]() On March 16 2011 16:55 ThumperSD wrote: Werent the people outside of Ukraine ok after Chernobyle? I dont see why people in the US is worrying as this, even in a worst case scenario, is far less fatal than Chernobyle... I live in the Westcoast and im certainly not worried Dude, Chernobyl had a very clear impact on the whole of europe. Take a look at this article, how meat farmers in BRITAIN was still affected by Chernobyl to pretty much this day. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/dec/29/sheep-farmers-chernobyl-meat-restricted Note that I am not saying that the current crisis will or will not lead to a chernobyl scenario, just wanted to shed some light on the issue on how fallout has a huge impact.

The Westcoast is only likely to be affected if there is a huge fire starting which blows up radioactive smoke high up into the atmosphere or another hydrogen explosion with a breached containment. The main problem of a widespread nuclear accident arent the ppl working at the npp and dieing or suffering from acute radiation sickness but the millions of ppl that are exposed to increased radiation over long periods of time which leads to an increased rate of leukemia or cancer. Those will never show up in any official statistics of such an accident and thats why ppl for instance in germany are overreacting currently like a "burnt child" remembering tchernobyl. + Show Spoiler + Before i get accused of pulling those figures out of my a** I'll post a link to a piece written by a Berkeley professor for the 10th year anniversary of tchernobyl - and the figures have worsened since then not even considering the huge difference of density of settlement between Japan/Ukraine http://www.ratical.org/radiation/CNR/Chernys10th.html

If you check out 37°25′22.7″N 141°01′58.5″E on Google Earth/maps, you can see an additional problem. The buildings are in fact 300 - 400m away from the sea. I don't know how far those jet nozzle things go exactly, but I doubt they span 300m's. Is the wind still blowing towards the sea? One of the additional reason they might be going with helicopters is because that way they limit exposure?

Since none isn't really working there and they are pretty much watching the istuation from "safe distance" if i read/heard right. Thats why they are trying use helicopters and trucks to cool pool and reactors and whatnot. User was warned for this post

There's no reason to reach that conclusion based on the information available. Edit: Thanks for the information, Ropid! (see post below) Edit to add: Grettin, that goes for your comment, too. Your gut feeling that radiation levels have risen since yesterday isn't something that needs to appear in this thread. The situation in Japan is very bad, it doesn't need your help to make it sound worse. Where is your "safe distance" quote from? Based on reports from Kyodo, NY Times and tagesschau.de, my understanding is that there are between 50 and 70 workers on site at Fukushima Daiichi, and that they are using a system of rapid rotation to allow work to be done in highly radioactive areas without exposing any one worker to a higher dose than absolutely necessary.

18:25 16 March: http://english.kyodonews.jp/news/2011/03/78597.html URGENT: SDF choppers unable to drop water on nuke reactor due to radiation TOKYO, March 16, Kyodo The Self-Defense Forces will not conduct a planned operation Wednesday to drop water from helicopters on the troubled No. 3 reactor of the Fukushima nuclear power plant because of the high radiation level around the plant, Defense Ministry officials said. The Ground Self-Defense Force helicopters were on standby to drop water on the reactor as it is feared the reactor may have released radioactive steam due to damage to its containment vessel. ==Kyodo

High radiation levels prevented a helicopter from flying to the site to drop water into the No. 3 reactor -- whose roof was damaged by an earlier explosion and where steam was seen rising earlier in the day -- to try to cool its fuel rods. From Reuters. To me it seems like the roof was blown away, and the radiation levels directly on top are too high for the helicopter crew to get near enough to pour water into the reactor. This is indeed bad news, since it hints at the fuel being close to or directly exposed to the atmosphere.

In a race against time, the reactor’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, said it had been able to double the number of workers at the plant to 100 from 50 as a result of falling radiations levels. It was not immediately clear when the additional workers returned to the plant.
