Crisis in Japan - Page 154

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Worth tweeting, too, that TEPCO have not 'abandoned Fukushima', as suggested by various shocker headlines. 50 brave workers remain on site. 16 seconds ago TimeOutTokyo TimeOutTokyo There has been no further report concerning the earlier earthquake alert. (12.40pm, March 16)

Who handles the t-shirt/store for Team Liquid? I was wondering if it was possible to set up a Team Liquid charity t-shirt, basically a modded version of the current TL shirt, and donate all proceeds to Japan? Of course, this idea can extend to future disasters as well. I think there would be a lot of users who would be interested in something like this, but that may just be hopeful thinking on my part.

(12.40pm, March 16) Thank you, I was going to mention this too. It should even be said that whenever you read on cnn or pretty much any western sensationalist news site that the workers have abandoned the site it almost always means that the non essential personnel have evacuated to a nearby slightly safer location due to temporary spike in radiation. They have done this multiple times because the radiation levels fluctuate and every time they temporarily move people away to wait for the levels to lower again the news sites type in huge letters "workers abandon plant".

After watching the video above, I am at a loss for words. How there are people like this doesn't surprise me, and I don't condone there way of thinking, but thanking god for killing 3000 people if not more? I'm sorry, but please step in front of moving traffic and rid yourself from society.

They have to deal with 3 disasters at once. Not only that, but 4 nuclear reactors that are in a very concerning state at the same time. No country has faced anything like that and the government&involved organisations must be under heavy strain. Other countries simply have more free resources right now. And more specialists, spare parts or tools that might be incredibly useful in that situation couldn't hurt even if they are not used and get sent home after a week. Nobody loses anything by playing safe and the last press conference suggested that they won't request anything until they really need it, which might be to late. I never said that they won't be able to handle it alone, but additional cooling equipment/generators, that might have been more powerful or better suited to get water directly from the ocean could've already been there and would've been incredibly useful when more reactors got in trouble or their efforts to get power trucks and stuff were not successful/took to long. Not to mention that additional specialists could've helped with certain tasks, because I don't see how the dropping water levels in #4 slipped. They either missed it, didn't inform anyone or had no resources left to cool there, because 1-3 had higher priority. All I'm saying is that it wouldn't have hurt to get help ready just in case or they could've repaired some important parts in time with the additional manpower/equipment and foreign media made it pretty clear that no direct requests/offers were accepted in the first few days. edit: (BBC) "03:49 Japan says it is ready to ask the US military for help in battling the crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant, the AFP news agency reports. " Like I said could've done that days ago.. ![]()

The cooling equipment was brought to the scene but apparently the plug/switch (whatever critically was needed) was flooded. Not to mention, the backup generators were up and running, got flooded, and so all electric components became useless. I read this a couple of pages back in this thread.

Apparently no tsunami alert, but don't take my word for it I am getting it off japanese tv and I may miss stuff. Their aftershocks are around 6.0 magnitude I believe and they've been going on and will be going on for a while.

On their front page they have an article based around a GE engineer who claimed to have resigned 35 years ago because the reactors were unsafe. Hindsight is 20/20 and I'm glad that our engineer hero felt so strongly about the poor design, that he resigned... and then proceed to not say a single thing about it for the next 35 years until shit hits the fan and there was a golden opportunity to get some publicity and to take a shot at your former employer. people/news like this pisses me off to no end. people can shit on Japan later if they were doing a shitty job, but right now I'm positive they're doing everything they can to take care of this. Thank you rus_brain for keeping us updated on the news. It's a shame when I pretty much depend on TL/reddit to get the latest update on the news because the major new sources are so crappy.

I don't know if this was posted here. I have a weak point with animals. It saddens me to see that dog go sit next to the other one that's laying down. I wish we were more like animals at times. Instead of focusing on the "wow" factor of all this...

France is now urging its nationals in Tokyo to leave Japan or head to the south of the country, Reuters reports. It says Paris has asked the Air France carrier to provide planes for the evacuation. Is it just me or is France being the most fear-mongering about this whole thing? French media was also the ones making up stuff about radiation levels earlier, and deciding by themselves that it was a 6 out of 7 on that disaster scale.
