Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true. |
There is little point speculating from images when we don't know these things, for all we know the emergency generators are not located anywhere near the reactor buildings.
|
it rolled right through that plant, look at the destruction right by the water. If you look at the before and after pictures of the plant, you can see the plant was hit
|
Ok, I don't want to come of as a conspiracy theorist or anything Just didn't think the plant looked like it was hit

Look at a side view photo, the trees are on a hill, 10m higher. And the buildings have blocked the energy from the tsunami wave.

i was under the impression this whole time that the quake made the reactors go into auto shutdown. but then the tsunami came along and since it was 7.5-8 meters high (the tsunami walls at the plant are 6.5 meters) it caused so much damage it took out the emergency power and cooling systems. can anyone confirm/add/correct?

As far as I know, the power plants themselves were not really damaged even by the tsunami, they were probably designed to handle that too without serious damage, at the very least without damage to such crucial internal systems as cooling. But whether the cooling systems were damaged or not does not really matter if the generators go out because the cooling systems need electricity to run. The emergency generators are the only thing I have heard confirmed were damaged by the tsunami, hence no power to run the actual cooling system, intact or not.

The second problem was, the generators where running while they got hit by the wave and that caused all the electic controlling components get destroyed too. Thats why the mobile generators could not plugged into the system immediately.

Just saw this today. Apparently he's explained in the comments section that he didn't mean that it was 'divine punishment', but rather he was expressing his views on the randomness of nature. At the end of the day though this is an extremely inappropriate poem to be posting at this time. It's like if someone you knew got hit by a car, and at their funeral you read about a poem about car crash statistics.

Does anyone know why they wouldn't build Tsunami barriers for a facility like this? I remember watching video of barriers like these all along the coastal towns. It would'nt even need to be a wall. Easy physics for a plant as crucial as this one could be just a wedge, and am pretty sure that would't cost THAT much, just enough to dissapate the force of the tsunami.
eg.
OOOO
X____X _X__X_ ___X___
O - PLANT X - BARRIER
But hey, I'm obviously no expert... forgive the underlines and ignore them, wouldnt allow me to format it with blank spaces

They did, it's 7.5 Meters tall. The wave was 9.5 meters tall. Clearly you don't read the thread...
also does anyone have a live feed of the NHK conference? I can't find one, ustream NHK is just playing recorded stuff. Apparently TEPCO is getting hammered by the media

Please stop insinuating, that a huge tsunami wave steamrolling whole landscapes could run into a nuclear plant producing 4.5 GW electrical energy without any serious damage...

Clearly not between 30-120. If possible questions like these should be accumulated in the OP.
Also, looking at the picture of after, that barrier seems to be gone.

We got pretty much hourly updates on the plant&radiation levels, but for the last days there was no information at all (aside from some obvious/less important stuff).
Seems to be pretty clear that since the first evacuation Tepco isn't capable of handling the situation anymore and without information or at least acknowledgement that they can't handle it, foreign experts can't help either, because they don't know what's going on.
