First is Earth to our sun, second is self-explanatory. Pretty mind blowing, imo at least.

gogogadgetflow: Nice!! I recognized the Herndon Monument climb immediately. The Mrs. and I have walked the campus a few times already on our visits to Annapolis, it's absolutely amazing. What do you do there btw?

Also, it would be cool if people could read the thread before posting because there are a ton of re-posts in here.

+ Show Spoiler +A view of Halifax, Canada after the largest accidental explosion known to man. A munitions supply ship collided with another ship and after burning for some time, the munitions ship exploded. The explosion vaporized dozens of boats in the area, killed almost the entire Halifax Fire Department and cause a tsunami 60 feet tall. Quoted from the picture source: "Within hours relief supplies and aid arrived from many sources including the naval vessels in the harbor. At ten PM, the same day as the explosion, Boston sent a relief train contained doctors, nurses and medical supplies. That train fought its way 700 miles through the same blizzard that ravaged Halifax. The train arrived in Halifax at three AM December 8th, only forty-two hours after the explosion.
Many of the casualties of the explosion were residents who were watching the burning ship through the windows of their homes. When the explosion occurred, the blast of air blew the window glass into their homes, killing and/or blinding many watching the excitement through their windows. The records show thirty-eight cases of total and permanent blindness. There were many more cases of less severe eye injury. Just as the 1942 Boston Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire led to large improvements in techniques of treating burn injuries, the Halifax Explosion led to large improvements in techniques of treating eye injuries.
As a thank you to the City of Boston for its rapid response, the City of Halifax sent Boston a Christmas tree in 1918. In 1971, the City of Halifax began a practice of sending a Christmas tree annually to Boston; partially as a thank you for the rapid relief that Halifax received in 1917 when it needed help, and, partially, to encourage commerce between the two cities. Halifax, now a municipal region, continues that practice to this day. Halifax selects the Christmas tree with great care. Boston stands the Halifax Christmas tree in Boston Common with great ceremony." Also, this was the largest man made explosion before Hiroshima

That .gif is always cool. It's a little confusing to me now though, in one of my classes I've been taught the largest theoretical size a star can be is ~1000x the mass of our sun, whereas the last star in that .gif is probably a million (billion?) times the size of our sun.
Hmm checked and it's 2600 solar radii, which translates into 2600x the size of our sun.

Spoilering it since I realized its a repost. + Show Spoiler +![[image loading]](http://blstb.msn.com/i/53/71F4DCDBCBD438A9C61B1ED1B32D54.jpg) Derek Redmond, Olympic runner, tore his hamstring in the middle of a race in the 1992j Barcelona Olympics. Struggling to finish, his dad jumps onto the track and helps him walk to the finish line. Real inspiring stuff imo, too much depressing shit on this thread. There was a really inspirational commercial about this with Morgan Freeman narrating, I'll post the link if I remember later.

Found this quote regarding the situation, couldn't find any news articles:
This photo by Kirsten Bole was seen in Pet Product News (Sept. issue) by his mother, who had not heard from him in two years and believed he was dead. The editor of Pet Product News called me after she received a very emotional call from the distraught mother. The mother and I have been in communication since. I am happy to report that he has been located and called his mother. His story is personal. But every homeless person on our streets has a distressing explanation as to how they spiraled into homelessness. Read more: http://www.digitaljournal.com/blog/1599#ixzz1DvNq23nI
