Warning, very graphic!

[image loading]This is a photograph of the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith. It inspired Abel Meeropol to write "Strange Fruit."
+ Show Spoiler [lyrics] +
Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black body swinging in the Southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant South,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh!

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the tree to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop

Here's a performance of "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday

Capa's famous picture of the fallen soldier from the Spanish Civil War.

I won't deny that's a very powerful picture. And I picked up photography and studied old pictures to improve my framing when I was younger.

But the picture turned out to be faked. Capa even admitted to it. (as in it's posed not photoshopped) Nonetheless without knowing it's background. It's still a really good picture actually for it's impact.

So many thought provoking images in this thread.

It's a sinkhole (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinkhole) - it petrifies me to think that the terra firma beneath you that you feel safe on may just be a thin crust covering a hole big enough for my whole estate to fall into. Not nice.

It's not racism, racism is againt races (skin, nationality etc) Isnt this called something else when refering to different beliefs against eachother? Misleading to call it racism.

But true, this thread is strictly speaking should only posess pictures that express 1000 words, and not the opposite. Even pictures that says very little and are funny, those belong in the laugh threads.
Neither should they need a text explaining the picture, which so many pictures need. Lots of misunderstandings here, though cant really expect more.

i actually did not want to say "racism". i wanted it to say "you" but kept my composure.
but i still think it qualifies as racism. but probably xenophobia would have been a better word.

amazing thread btw., thanks for all the stories.

That .gif is always cool. It's a little confusing to me now though, in one of my classes I've been taught the largest theoretical size a star can be is ~1000x the mass of our sun, whereas the last star in that .gif is probably a million (billion?) times the size of our sun.

Hmm checked and it's 2600 solar radii, which translates into 2600x the size of our sun.

Mass and size are not the same thing. Hence a white dwarf star can be as massive as the sun but relatively the same size as Earth

That's the most retarded and worthless simplification ever.
Islam is, in contrast to Christianity which demands spreading of the word, tolerant of other religions. Islam was the first "world" religion to publicly tolerate other religions.

Is it americas fault we have so many religious idiots who know nothing of history or religion?

Lol??
Try showing your freedom of religion over in some predominantly Muslim country. Or better put, and much more telling. Try publicly converting from an Muslim to "X" religion in a predominantly Muslim country, and tell me how tolerant they are.
Then come back to the US or Europe, and publicly convert from a Christian to a Muslim. See which of the two you survive.
I know this because a good friend of mine converted to Christianity from Islam, and his family threatened to kill him if he didn't renounce it and go back. And this was even over in America.......over in the Middle East, he probably would be dead or on the run.

If you know anything about the Koran, you would know that it is very tolerant. People that are intolerant or refuse change are what you call extremists. If they threatened to kill him, they are extremists. pure and simple and do not reflect the religion. Interesting fact you should keep in mind, in Islam, you go to heaven whether you are Muslim, Christian or Jewish.
When you live in a society that isnt open to change (which the Koran promotes changes BTW) it is inevitable that people will have a different mentality.
Don't call a religion intolerant based hear say or what you see on FOX
