This whole "we sink your ships and kill your people for food" strategy of NK must be punished. It's the most messed up thing to attack and other people while demanding food/money.

The only reason NK has survived this far was basically by acting like a big baby throwing a tantrum every couple of months/years and the international community has been supporting this kind of behavior by giving money/aid to them. Just cut off everything and let them starve themselves out and hope the population will rebel against the government.

I fear this might be some kind of demonstration from the new NK leader, which would confirm that he is even more stupid and sadistic than his predecessors.

Seriously, the situation there is sooo fucked up and it seems like everyone is ok with the needling from NK if it avoids a fist fight.

NK needs to just surrender to the south. It will never happen without a war though. So people will die no matter what. Better that the people die in a war than to just be killed by a bully that you try to "ignore".

That would definitely be the worst case scenario O.o, I think SK and NK would have done better if they had signed a treaty of some sort before tensions were at this level, but I have no idea what they will do now with all these events going on -.-

Let's keep it real: If we don't do anything and just wait it might take ages to get China and Russia to exert some pressure to stop NKorea and a lot more people might die until that happens, if they will act at all.
But cases like this and the situation of the majority of people in NK show how little the leaders of NK care about others, and if we do anything that seriously signals them war than we are in for a lot of death, destruction and suffering as well.

I don't know what to do about this, but I hope anything that's gonna be done is done so with great consideration and care.

I'm going to bed now and hope that the world (read: South Korea) will still be there tomorrow.

It is an interesting thing and also a great tragedy. I need to know how this gets resolved.

That is the point, they aren't going to just surrender, especially if you do nothing at all. Die doing nothing vs die doing something.

but you are advocating war? what the hell man. other people suggested unification via assloads of money. concessions in relief and aid are better than a huge retaliation that starts world war 3

And that has been working wonders, hasn't it? Throw money at the problem and it goes away, right? That is the solution?

At school, did giving the bully your lunch money stop him from asking for it again later?

There is alot of patriotism and nationalism in the hearts of North Koreans (as it should of course, all of us love our own turf), so its pretty ignorant to just say that its just the government that is bad.

In my opinion the most effective course of action is the continued isolation of NK, as well as continued sanctions by the UN.

Its a messy situation, sucks that the philosophy of these people leading NK are centuries behind the western world.

This is actually the best way to guarantee a war. North Korea is in a position where they can't surrender because then they will be subject to what ever demands the South makes. They've basically been pushed into a corner, abandoned by their once allies to their own devices and now they're desperately trying to get out of this situation without giving in, and really you cant blame them, surrendering in a war isnt just "oh cool wars over lets go home and make tea and crumpets" it destroys nations, you think North Korea is a pretty poor place now for living standards? Wait untill their economy is destroyed, they're banned from having any form of millitary. Its not something any government could accept, to condemn its people to even further poverty. I'm not advocating what North Korea is doing, but you need to look at things from their perspective, this is a war that they've been fighting for decades now, and something they've invested everything into, they cant just let it go after so many deaths on their side in an attempt to win. At this point trying to "starve" them out would guarantee an all out war with the entire nation backing them.

NK is really starting to push their limits here. If it was a country that didn't have nukes the situation would be completely different. You can't really punish the whole nation and all its innocents because of military casualties on SKs part; I have no idea how SK is going to deal with this; it's be going on forever now. This time it's different though, because unlike the sinking of the SK ship months ago, now they are probably just going to say "so what are you going to do about it?".
If you watch Godzilla backwards it's about a benevolent lizard who helps rebuild a city and then moonwalks into the ocean.

I'd love to know what Nkorea inside source is giving you your informations on how much the people of Nkorea would back up his government if it wasnt for fear of it.

Usually, humans do no like to starve to death while having relatives tortured/kidnapped/killed and not able to move freely.
But eh they are crazy asians fanatics, and they do lots of flowery shows in honor of their leader,so they must be pretty patriotic!

Guess wh'os ignorant.

Remember that most of those 20 million are starving, and that there are hundreds of thousands of political prisoners in internment camps.
