I know that there are a few of these already, but I looked through what a search for "shoes" turned up and a lot of the threads seem to be pretty old, a few weeks at least, and most of them dealt with sports shoes and such. Moreover, most of the threads were predominantly populated with images of shoes that I feel sure were posted as jokes, like the black shoes that have toes. If they aren't, I certainly am not wearing them.
Where there were shoes that looked reasonable, they were sports shoes and there wasn't really any discussion of brands or models more than "these are really comfortable", and I would like a bit more of a comparison sort of affair than a random buy.
I'm asking here because I have absolutely no clue as to fashion or brands, but am sort of tired of wearing sports shoes that are three or four difference colors and plated with vinyl in relentless diagonals, or ones that are solid black or white. I was planning on buying Converses, not Chuck Taylors, because I recognize the brand and most of their shoes looks fairly nice and minimalist in design. But, like I said, I don't know anything about this, and thought I would ask the cool people at TL before I went out and bought something.
There's also the fact that most of the shoes that I've looked at and found tolerable are skate shoes, which have a few design aspects I am not a huge fan of and will never make use of, like the soles or vamp. A part of me is wondering if there's any company out there that makes tasteful, stylish shoes designed completely for casual wear. I do like patterned prints in moderation, if that's a factor.
Cost isn't really an issue, but sub-$100 would be nice. If the shoes are nice and will last a while, I wouldn't be adverse to spending more, however.
tl;dr - I don't know anything but want new shoes. I don't want sports shoes. I'm not adverse to skate shoes, but I'm wondering if there's sitting shoes or something. Pretty is important.

well i would suggest wearing running shoes.
no you do not have to be a runner to wear running shoes -__-
running shoe's are excellent because they have cushioning(depending on what brand and style they are)
Good arch support, but if you want a shoe with good arch support you pretty much gotta know what shoes have the right category for your feet such as motion control(flat foot), stability(Low Arches) and Neutral(High arches). Getting the right arch on your feet is key for comfort.
Also they are lightweight.

Embrace the inner hipster in yourself and buy some chuck taylors.

Well, the reason i didn't want shoes like the Gazelles is because I think that the stripes look really ugly, and that the solid color everywhere else is uninteresting. I mean, it's stupid, but if I have the option of getting shoes that have a design I like and shoes that have a design I don't like, then I naturally want to try to find shoes with a design I like.
My point was never that I want to be a runner to wear running shoes, it's just that I think they're sort of ugly, like above. I spent a lot of time wearing running/tennis shoes, and I know they're comfortable. I mean, there's lots of benefits, sure, but my question is whether there's a shoe that's more specialized for what I want to do (walk around, look cool), and I'd like to get familiar with what's available.
No, I will not wear flip-flops.

OG vans are sick. Black, gray, white, blue... you can't go wrong.
IMHO much better than chuck taylors.

What look are you trying for? Typical college kid? Skater? Something more sophisticated?

i feel ya man, running shoes are always ugly but check out some nikes running shoes. They are mostly known for styles. Nikes running shoes gives both fashion and comfort lol. Like the Shox's and the Air Pegasus
But any other brand like mizuno's, asics, brooks and even sauconys alot of people dodge them without really trying them cause they are ugly and not fashionable. Running shoes are not really ment to be a fashion statement, its gonna get ugly after 300 miles anyways lol.
Alot of people go for nike running shoes for style tho.

Onitsuka Tiger Ultimate 81 ... pick whatever color you like. Not too hipster to be annoying and I have yet to see someone with the exact same shoe and color as mine (I own the brown/yellow/white). It's nice enough to be worn with nice clothes and as well as for casual wear. Don't expect to do too much running with them though. Best of all they are very comfortable (this is coming from someone who has somewhat wide feet).
Edit: They are fairly cheap.
If you're looking for sneakers for activity then I'd recommend a pair of New Balance.

Somewhere between typical college kid and sophisticated, as far away from skater as possible.
Thanks again to everyone. There are a lot of really neat choices; I didn't expect to get nearly this many responses, and didn't expect to get nearly as many different brands.
