I know that there are a few of these already, but I looked through what a search for "shoes" turned up and a lot of the threads seem to be pretty old, a few weeks at least, and most of them dealt with sports shoes and such. Moreover, most of the threads were predominantly populated with images of shoes that I feel sure were posted as jokes, like the black shoes that have toes. If they aren't, I certainly am not wearing them.
Where there were shoes that looked reasonable, they were sports shoes and there wasn't really any discussion of brands or models more than "these are really comfortable", and I would like a bit more of a comparison sort of affair than a random buy.
I'm asking here because I have absolutely no clue as to fashion or brands, but am sort of tired of wearing sports shoes that are three or four difference colors and plated with vinyl in relentless diagonals, or ones that are solid black or white. I was planning on buying Converses, not Chuck Taylors, because I recognize the brand and most of their shoes looks fairly nice and minimalist in design. But, like I said, I don't know anything about this, and thought I would ask the cool people at TL before I went out and bought something.
There's also the fact that most of the shoes that I've looked at and found tolerable are skate shoes, which have a few design aspects I am not a huge fan of and will never make use of, like the soles or vamp. A part of me is wondering if there's any company out there that makes tasteful, stylish shoes designed completely for casual wear. I do like patterned prints in moderation, if that's a factor.
Cost isn't really an issue, but sub-$100 would be nice. If the shoes are nice and will last a while, I wouldn't be adverse to spending more, however.
tl;dr - I don't know anything but want new shoes. I don't want sports shoes. I'm not adverse to skate shoes, but I'm wondering if there's sitting shoes or something. Pretty is important.

well i would suggest wearing running shoes.
no you do not have to be a runner to wear running shoes -__-
running shoe's are excellent because they have cushioning(depending on what brand and style they are)
Good arch support, but if you want a shoe with good arch support you pretty much gotta know what shoes have the right category for your feet such as motion control(flat foot), stability(Low Arches) and Neutral(High arches). Getting the right arch on your feet is key for comfort.
Also they are lightweight.

Embrace the inner hipster in yourself and buy some chuck taylors.

Well, the reason i didn't want shoes like the Gazelles is because I think that the stripes look really ugly, and that the solid color everywhere else is uninteresting. I mean, it's stupid, but if I have the option of getting shoes that have a design I like and shoes that have a design I don't like, then I naturally want to try to find shoes with a design I like.
My point was never that I want to be a runner to wear running shoes, it's just that I think they're sort of ugly, like above. I spent a lot of time wearing running/tennis shoes, and I know they're comfortable. I mean, there's lots of benefits, sure, but my question is whether there's a shoe that's more specialized for what I want to do (walk around, look cool), and I'd like to get familiar with what's available.
No, I will not wear flip-flops.

OG vans are sick. Black, gray, white, blue... you can't go wrong.
IMHO much better than chuck taylors.

What look are you trying for? Typical college kid? Skater? Something more sophisticated?

i feel ya man, running shoes are always ugly but check out some nikes running shoes. They are mostly known for styles. Nikes running shoes gives both fashion and comfort lol. Like the Shox's and the Air Pegasus
But any other brand like mizuno's, asics, brooks and even sauconys alot of people dodge them without really trying them cause they are ugly and not fashionable. Running shoes are not really ment to be a fashion statement, its gonna get ugly after 300 miles anyways lol.
Alot of people go for nike running shoes for style tho.

Onitsuka Tiger Ultimate 81 ... pick whatever color you like. Not too hipster to be annoying and I have yet to see someone with the exact same shoe and color as mine (I own the brown/yellow/white). It's nice enough to be worn with nice clothes and as well as for casual wear. Don't expect to do too much running with them though. Best of all they are very comfortable (this is coming from someone who has somewhat wide feet).
Edit: They are fairly cheap.
If you're looking for sneakers for activity then I'd recommend a pair of New Balance.

I live in Canada so I'm not too sure about US prices, but I'd like to comment about Onitsuka Tiger shoes. I used to be able to spot Onitsuka Tigers in West Edmonton Mall for around ~$50 and picked up a few since they were pretty much alternatives to Converses, in that they look good with virtually any casual wear and are cheap.
I'm in Ontario now and I've been noticing that stores such as Town Shoes are starting to carry them for >$100 which is saddening for me. I found some cheaper versions in younger/skate focused shops for ~$40, but the quality was quite horrid in comparison to those I picked up at West Ed. Does anyone know reliable online retailers that carry these shoes at reasonable prices? Or perhaps shops in south western Ontario, including TO?

You can't really go wrong with vans no matter how hard you try unless you get checkered slipons or something, but IMO they look like flippers in general, but not to the point of making them look ridiculous.
There's a lot of shoes out there that are much much better, but I haven't really been keeping up with men's fashion trends so I can't namedrop many. Some (<- key word) Supra shoes look pretty nice on guys with biggish feet.
On another note, stay far away from chucks.. And converse in general.. they look like clown shoes on men

Check out Ecco shoes. They are the only brand that you'll ever need. They make everything from hiking shoes, to sport shoes, to casual shoes, to formal shoes. You'll find the look that you want. They're incredibly durable (out of the 15-20 pairs that I have owned, only one has ever fallen apart) and comfortable, especially if you have wider feet. Also, once you know your size in Ecco shoes, you can very easily shop online to get the best deals on what you want. The only drawback to Ecco's is that they are on the pricier side, costing between $100 and $200 (retail) for most of their products. However, because of their quality and durability, I think they're worth it. I swear by Ecco's and have been wearing them almost exclusively for the past ten years.

Sperry Topsiders, I've had this pair for 3 years going strong, I fucking love them.

I picked these up a while ago. They offered 13's at the time, so that's the size I picked up. Most comfortable shoes I have ever owned thus far. I usually forget I'm even wearing them, and wear them from 9 in the morning to midnight without ever really noticing.
So yeah, go for the Adidas. The next pair I'll get are probably the Gazelles.

These shoes are unparalled in discomfort. Highly recommended.

Some nice sneakers are...
Puma Suedes - pretty versatile sneakers, comfy.
Onitsuka Tigers - see above
Adidas - lots of good casual sneakers, I recommend Stan Smiths, Campus, Superstars, Nizzas
If you want more semi formal shoes...
Converse Jack Purcell - many great low top models, semi formal look.
Sperry Topsiders or Sebago Docksides - boat shoes, timeless staple of Ivy League fashion. Docksides are generally more expensive but better fits imo.
Sperry
Sebago
Common Projects - amazing aesthetic and quality, bit pricey tho. Many models to choose from.
Spring Courts - decent
Pro Keds - pretty good quality

Check out Skechers, Ralph Lauren, Steve Madden, ECCO, GBX will have a nice pair now and then... Timberland has some nice casuals, Diesel has a couple of okay styles, same with Cole Haan, GUESS? has some good shoes now and then. Check out sites like zappos and 6pm.com (which is like zappos for way less money).
I like to wear dress shoes that aren't extremely, personally. For that I like Aldo, Stacy Adams, Kenneth Cole, and even some Steve Madden shoes. It can dress up a pair of jeans and a button down shirt or whatever, or dress down business casual clothes, while still maintaining a proper look.
Pumas are nice, super comfortable, but let's be honest with each other for a moment.. running shoes look like ass with jeans... Pumas look terrible with jeans in general, imo. They're amazing with shorts, but to me, most Pumas don't look good with jeans. Then again, that's because of the style of clothing I wear overall, I think, but I've talked with quite a few people that agree with that (since Pumas are primarily sport shoes).
In the end, the clothes you wear decide what style your shoes are. Shoes are a piece of the puzzle, and they're one of the final pieces. You don't plan your clothes around your shoes, you plan your shoes around your clothes. So, if you're looking for something to wear with jeans and a t-shirt (unless you're also going to throw in a vest or a blazer), then skate shoes are nice (I'd go DVS over any other brand. They hold up for-fucking-ever man), some Pumas are good (specifically Basket, Speeder, Replicat, Driftcat, and Roma... I also love the TX-301, Voltaic which are only good with shorts, look terrible with jeans imo, and their Ducatti line)... you can go with almost anything really, probably some "urban" style would be best, because they have flat soles, which look a million times better in jeans to me.
If you're going to go with canvas shoes... buy PF Flyers.. they're guaranteed to make your run faster and jump higher, can't go wrong with that! I think that's a pretty good list to start with though.

What's the general opinion on Payless shoes? (i.e. airwalk shoes)
|
My brother had a pair of Onitsuka Tigers and he had them for about two and a half years, i'm planning to get some when i need new shoes
|
On May 23 2010 12:04 GrayArea wrote: What's the general opinion on Payless shoes? (i.e. airwalk shoes)
Airwalks are like any other skate shoe, imo, but way cheaper. If that's all you can afford, go for it... but honestly, women notice dude (well, the type I go after). If you're not worried about that, then continue to go there. I haven't had a pair of airwalks in like 10 years probably, so I have no idea what the quality is like anymore, but I remember that back in the day they held up really well. I wouldn't personally shop there for every day shoes, but buying higher-end clothing/shoes is my thing. Some people spend a lot on electronics and cars and such... I like clothes and shoes. Whatever. Also, while a lot of people don't believe it... you pay less because they really aren't as high quality as the other places. I'm not 100% sure that applies to Airwalks (they were good at one time), but in general, I've found that Payless shoes, Wal-Mart, Target, etc, don't hold up as well as name brand shoes. Seriously, though, for like $20 more you can get a pair from Famous Footwear or something and they're better shoes overall.
On May 23 2010 12:11 Scaramanga wrote: My brother had a pair of Onitsuka Tigers and he had them for about two and a half years, i'm planning to get some when i need new shoes
ASICS make great shoes all around... it's hard to go wrong with those. I can't say I'd recommend wearing them for that long, though. The insoles break down pretty heavily after 6 solid months of wear, and are shot by a year with almost any shoe.

Well, instead of changing the shoes, maybe you should change your jeans
But actually, to be fair, low cut slim sneakers look great with tapered jeans (think of all the times you see low top chucks + skinny jeans), and the more traditional low top Puma sneakers (see Suedes, Clydes, etc.) have pretty atypical sneaker models. However, the models you mentioned are not traditional sneakers, they are race sport shoes, which are more rounded and thus do not look great with jeans (or anything else imo ). Also, if your Pumas are too low, you should check out some of Puma's hightops (First Round, Post Up).

What are the top pair?!?! They are incredibly hot the top pair is puma, and its just a logo for like Lamborghini or something, if u visit their page (puma) and look for like their "racing" shoes or something u'll find ones like that.. puma has some pretty sick looking shoes (i got 3 pairz) and they have a pair called like goodyear racing or something, they're all leather and really sleek looking.. in fact heres that top pair, but in a diff. color, I think these are pretty awesome too:
Curt, hi, it's Anto lol.
Those look baller as fuck, I think i'm gonna order that exact pair asap.

Sorry that I'm a... week late on this?
I just wanted to thank everyone that posted in this thread. It was a really big help. In the end, I decided to get Sperry Topsiders for whatever-wear, and Onitsuka Tigers for athletic things, since I really couldn't decide between the two and they were fairly cheap. I suppose that we can always count on Teamliquid for people to know everything about the strangest subjects?

Wow, didn't realize so many people liked those faggy flat bottom shoes that rappers wear. They are all ugly as hell.

Wow dude... class act with the "faggy" comment.
I really like "Macbeth's". The are not very well known, but they are no slave labor, no child labor, environmentally friendly, vegan shoes.
The company was started by Tom DeLonge from Blink 182/Angels and Airwaves, and so they are also very "pretty".

90% of the shoes in this thread look like something a hyper 10 year old might like, or something an angsty 15 year old might wear. If you're looking for something fashionable try using lookbook; just be warned that every single person that posts there is a total hipster. So just focus on the shoes and not whatever trendy scarf they're wearing or how deep their v/u-neck shirts are.

Puma Roma PF US Ext. Sexiest shoes alive - I bought them with some Adidas Classics and I totally neglected the classics. (Speaking about them... I need to get me a replacement pair - Puma you have a lifelong customer *back and forth shaking fist and googoo eyes*)

these are awesome, very light. my only complaint is they have a stiff and raised heel, so i don't wear them anymore. i also liked classic vans or vans slip ons.
i have weird feet though, so now i wear either asics tai chis or vivo barefoots

I got the blue canvas one. Leather seemed too fancy for me and I didn't really want on in plaid.

You lot make me feel so old, lol.
If you want minimal, it's all about brown or black leather. Plus, if you're good to them, they'll last forever. Personally, I wear three-hole docs for just about everything aside from severe weather or specialist purpose footwear.

Work with jeans and shorts or slacks, comfortable skate shoe design with a bit of class.
Or, you can always go with the solid choice of Converse All-Stars or some Vans.

Puma Frankenclydes
come in all different color variations
The FC's are usually priced 40-60$ and are bit beefier than the Suedes. But they have the same kind of look. Suedes are almost always on sale for like 20-40$ (but usually the non common colors).
tbh, I've had both shoes and I really can't see much of a difference between them. Anyone knowledgeable on it?

The air cushioned sole is sooo good for walking.
