I decided to finally replace my shitty flat laptop style keyboard with something more durable and sturdy. Never had a mechanical keyboard before either, so gonna see what's what.
Impulse buy, but hey for $20 can you really go wrong?

That's basically it. They have higher quality keys with better tactile feedback than the usual membrane based keyboards you would find for $5 in a local electronics store.

Unlike most keyboards which can be bought at barracks, these are only available once you have built a factory with attached tech lab. It is here that you can research durability and tactile feel.
I've tried using my friends expensive mechanical keyboard for SC and it is TERRIBLE. Its not bad for typing but you have to press the keys much further and harder which isnt what you want for a game like SC.
What kind of switches does the DT-35 use? >currently on Unicomp IBM Model M remake, but it's not really portable (PS/2) so I am looking for a portable backup (either ABS M1 or DT-35)

plastic membranes
anyway, thanks a lot OP! I said in another thread that I'd buy a mechanical keyboard if I found one for $20 Just ordered for ~$21.50 !
I have this keyboard.. it is very sturdy and nice to use ^.^ feels like the keys will never ever break :O
But for gaming use like sc.. well.. keys do take a bit longer to press and are a bit firmer to push down than a cheapo keyboard but its really nice ^.^

That's what I did with the extra Salmosas when they were 13.37 on Woot, sold one, gave away the other, using the 3rd.

How much harder? I'd think people press hard enough when they are agitated and excited such as when playing SC.
for some reason the constant loud clicking noises sounded really annoying. I'll stick with my G15 till I can order the samsung one
If you don't like the noises then mech keyboards aren't for you. Pretty much every design features loud clicking noises (although the switch type determines how loud it is and what sound it makes).
As for the clicking further, you already have to bottom out your keys whenever you use a regular membrane keyboard so that statement is false. Pressing harder is true though, these things are similar in actuation force to buckling springs. This particular model uses black alps copy switches btw

It depends on the type of switches he has. He probably has black cherry switches.
However, it shouldn't require you to push the key down farther to make the keystroke register. Mechanical keyboards shouldn't even have to be depressed 1/2 way to make the keystroke. That doesn't make sense at all.

Hm... For 30 bucks, I may check this out.
My friend has one - he really likes it. Kind of sounds like a jackhammer though.

Black cherries don't require toooo much strength, I think 60 grams of force. I think Husky might be talking about really old school switches.
Btw, the black alps the M1 uses are tactile no click, so it is not as noisy as cherry blues.
Thanks for the heads up on this, just ordered it. Had been looking for a new keyboard for a while and this one didn't look too bad but I didn't want to drop the money for its regular price, so this was a nice surprise.
I think mechanical keyboards are good for FPS, because i remember seeing that a lot of CS progamers use the mechanical steelseries keyboard. I can imagine its good for RTS as well.
i have this keyboard and it's awesome. it's the same thing as steelseries 7g/6g except it's a bit louder... this is a great keyboard if the people around you won't mind the noise PPPP
Is this keyboard any louder than a usual mechanical? Some of the reviews say it's too loud but they might not be gamers or used to any mechanical keyboard in general.I saw a vid and it sounded fine but I'd like to hear from a gamer that has it already.
The keyboard is slightly loader than a normal keyboard but I actuallly like the sound of it. :D For anyone on the fence about this: I bought this keyboard for about $60 after tax/shipping about two months ago. It was worth every penny. At $20, they're practically giving these away for free.
And its hard to explain how a mechanical keyboard is better because a big part of it is the feel. You have to try it for yourself. Almost everyone I know who has tried a mechanical say they prefer it to a normal keyboard.
isn't that a good thing? I hate accidently hitting the capslock key when I try to hit 'a'. It happens like once every month, but it pisses me off so much T_T
Time to go cry for me. I bought this for 50$ a couple months ago on Newegg, not only that, it was DOA so I had to ship it back at my own cost to get it replaced.
I just got it delivered to me in under 40 hours since i placed the order and it is phenomenal. People who said that the resistance will be higher then regular keyboards and unsuitable for RTS are way off. It is actually way more responsive then most regular keyboards i have had in my hands. Awesome keyboard, thansk Sadist><

Hey do you guys use your keyboard with the flippers (the things that raise the back of the keyboard up) or without???
I also just got my package and am typing on it currently. Overall, it's a very nice keyboard and seems to have a perfect layout.
You guys should have seen the condition of the NewEgg package when it arrived. The tape was completely torn off. The box was crushed to about 1/2 it's normal size. The keyboard box was sticking out of the top! It looked like somebody had kicked the package all the way to my front door.
To be honest, I'm surprised this thing is even working right now. I guess this says something about its extreme durability?

My package arrived in perfect condition. I like the keyboard. Keys are good, layout is good, no BS, and the size itself is compact (no overly big edges on the sides). I like it a lot. The lights only seem overly bright if your face is parallel to them, if you have the feet up on to angle it then it is not bad.
Yeah, the lights aren't as bad as the reviews would have led me to believe, but they definitely are blinding from head on. Great keyboard so far, can't wait for the stupid SC2 beta patch to come out already so I can get to playing~
Mine arrived yesterday, and after getting rid of some keys (window key fucks up your shit), I got to work on some BW. The precise action on the keys is very reassuring, and the massively loud clicking makes me feel super gosu. But I've noticed some problems when I'm macroing. For example:
(Warning, I didn't take the time to proofread this. I just blurted it out and posted it. Bad formatting and opinions ahoy!) + Show Spoiler +
I play zerg and I like to mass ling (kwanro <3 (also, remember that one MSL right before Oversky joined ACE when he mass linged Bisu to death? God that is one of my favorite games ever)), so when I'm hovering over my hatcheries and mashing SZ I tend to get some fucked up inputs. It's like the keyboard doesn't acknowledge that I pressed S BEFORE Z. So I go back to micro my army, go back to my main base, and find three larva at every hatch (FML).
This is me making a conscious effort to press S before Z, while still doing it as fast as I can (pressing the space bar with my right hand to simulate clicking a different hatch with my mouse): sz sz zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs sz zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs sz zs s z zs s zzs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs s zzs zs sz zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs zs
SZ = success! Lings on the way! ZS's = fail, gg no re.
I can slow it down and get the correct input, but what's the point of having practiced my macro if I can use it?
Though thank god it doesn't ever fuck up drone production. I'd gg if I lost a game because I failed at droning at the right point of time: sd sd sd sd sd sd sd sd sd sd sd sd sd sd sd sd (pass)

In conclusion, if you're a cheesy zerg player who likes to all-in with lings, don't use this keyboard.
TLDR version, the post I've quoted from earlier in the thread is 100% accurate in my case, and my missing lings prove it!
Great post, I opened up a tab while reading your post to look for the game you mentioned but then found out you saved me the trouble. :p Hopefully the "sz" problem doesn't come up too often though.

Pliers. And elbow grease.
I tried it once and it seemed impossible, so I stopped trying until I looked into if it was possible or not. It is. You just can't be afraid to break anything.

you're supposed to press them almost instantaneously but consciously press s before z. clearly using two hands shows you aren't doing it right

I didn't realize the problem stated was from mashing a set of keys simultaneously and expecting them to come out in the order wanted, can't exactly call that a precise way to make Zerglings. In that case, yes it comes out zs on my keyboard. I'll disagree on the doing it right part though, seems like a user error.
actually it's interesting you should mention this because on my keyboard (just an ordinary laptop keyboard) when i hit s and z simultaneously, it comes out as sz. but when i hit s and h, or s and d, or s and m, it comes out as ds/hs/ms. it only comes out in the right order for zerglings, so apparently it is a keyboard issue

I don't think you're quite understanding the point. There is a distinct separation in the time we press S and the time we press Z, the issue is that it's so close together the keyboard fucks up and reverses the input.

That's because your point of reference is a membrane-based keyboard. If you've tried mechanical keys that make a click sound when they actuate you'll be able to tell the difference. (Try cherry mx blue switches).

hey i have blue switches ^_^ quite nice indeed. at least i think theyre blue...might be gold actually.
I've been using the same Cherry G80 - 3000 and it is absolutely amazing. Heavily recommend to anyone who's as anal as me about having the perfect keyboard and freaks out if they play on a different one.
I come from the high-speed Tetris scene, and play at upwards of 8+ keys/second. I experimented with an oldschool mechanical keyboard, and it just didn't do the trick. I can play faster with "softer" keys, simply because you don't need to press them as hard. Maybe 5 years ago these were the best, but nowadays you can find extremely responsive and gaming-grade keyboards easily online.

You do know that different "oldschool mechanical" keyboards use different switches right? You're using the wrong switches for playing tetris.
I have not found any membrane based keyboard that requires less force than my board with cherry MX browns (45 grams). There are switches that are even lighter than this.
Nowadays, it is much cheaper to make keyboards based on membrane switches and people have forgotten what a good keyboard feels like. "Gaming-grade" keyboards (with the exception of the SteelSeries 7G with linear black cherries) are all marketed with gimmicky stuff like back lighting and macro buttons and mechanical keyboards (which were standard decades ago) are now made as niche products. It's a shame, really.
Bump, I was a total idiot and didn't pick this up months ago (well I didn't really have money then but anyway..) so does anyone know a place that sells this right now? I checked ebay, amazon, and newegg and no sites have it. Google gives me tons of sites with reviews and links to the newegg listing for it.
I have been looking for this keyboard as well. On newegg it used to just say "out of stock," but now there's an actual price. Maybe a sign that it is going to become available soon? Someone who is a newegg frequent flier can confirm this?
For the people complaining about the "clicking" sound from mechanical keyboards I recommend getting one with Cherry MX Brown switches. They have no click but still have the tactile touch for the good "feel".
I have an MX Brown Filco at home. Having to use this rubbish Logitech membrane keyboard while I am overseas makes me realise how great mechanical keyboards really are and I miss mine dearly
So I've been using mine for 2.5 months now, and I can say that I definitely got to like it more than my previous i-rocks scissor switch (laptop type) keyboard. It had really shitty switches that were prone to breaking and getting worn from normal use, and replacing scissor switches from spare keys is really annoying and difficult.
No complaints about ABS M1 so far, and the clicking noise in an empty room is actually pretty rhythmic and not annoying at all, it helps me get work done

EDIT: oh this is an old thread I guess..strange thing to have been bumped...
It's a good thing you read the exhaustive number of pages and websites that have been posted before offering this tasty tidbit of keyboard knowledge...
I currently have $7 LITEON keyboard which I purchased from Newegg based on the reviews, but just yesterday ordered a FILCO Majestouch Majestouch Tactile Touch NKRO Keyboard (brown cherry switch). The main reason why I'm switching is cause of the lack of N Key rollover. I believe my keyboard only picks up 4 max simultaneous key presses which is an issue for me when playing FPS's.
Frequently Asked Questions What is a mechanical switch keyboard? Most keyboards that either come with a computer for free these days or are purchased for next to nothing at the local computer mart use inexpensive "rubber dome" or "membrane" contacts under the keys that have a mushy feel, lack tactile feedback, and must be fully depressed in order to be detected. The result can be an uncomfortable and tiring typing experience. Mechanical keyboards on the other hand utilize an individual mechanical switch underneath each key that provides consistent actuation. Such switches are usually only used for industrial applications due to their price. The benefit of these mechanical switches is comfort, increased typing speeds, and lifetime. Mechanical switches are rated for millions of key presses. In its lifetime a high quality mechanical switch based keyboard will provide a reliable and pleasurable typing experience for a long time to come, outliving several cheaper keyboards.
I can imagine, if you compare keyboards to pianos; mechanical keyboards are fully weighed keys and membrane keyboards are your plastic springs keyboards.
I wish this thread was never bumped, it's only another reminded on what I missed out on. Two of my friends bought the ABS M1 and I'm both happy (nice keyboard to type on) and sad (I didn't buy one) when I use their keyboards.
The only problem I have with this keyboard is that sometimes the space key starts to squeak a bit and it gets a little annoying. Other than that, this keyboard is an absolute joy to type on.

Flash uses DT-35 fighting~~~
Having a DT-35 of my own to use is the only thing that keeps me from crying at night after missing out on the newegg deal
I just read this, and I was curious what some of the people who bought the ABS M1 think of its performance in terms of starcraft, on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the best. Also curious if anyone has used other mechanical keyboards as well, and how the M1 compares to those.
I can only use mechanical keyboards i lose where my hand is on a gummy keyboard. lol I buy mine for $10 at a local computer store in a bin, to be honest i can't recognize any difference between a $10 keyboard and a $100 keyboard except the $100 keyboard has a bunch of useless features
