I'm from the South too. Actually listen to yourself say the words in a sentence. "First, we'll go out. Then we'll come home." "Tom is a better pilot than Tim." Southerners tend to say 'then' with 1.5 syllables as is common with many Southern vowel sounds. Something like thee-un. Depending on where you are in the South, people will say 'than' much closer to 1 syllable or like thay-un. The pronunciations are still different unless you are living with mountain people. At this rate, you'll never get that degree in linguistics! | ||
