Hey guys, I just picked up EVE a week ago, haven't been able to play a lot yet, however, just have a question ^^ As an economics major, I'm pretty curious about the virtual economy of EVE. I just had a quick question. Does EVE have inflation? If not, how is it counteracted? (as far as I understand, missions would provide money injects into the economy.) I guess loss of equipment\ships would take money out, but just wondering if there's any explicit mechanics. Thank you!

A LOT of ships die. You lose ships a lot. Also, there's used up ammunition, taxes, broker fees. But really lost ships are a LOT of lost money.

Yeah, EVE definitely does have inflation. Recently, Factional Warfare has inflated the economy a lot, because it made everyone very, very rich for not much effort.

Loss of ships doesn't take money out, nor can it. Missions etc pay in isk whereas mining gives minerals. If the missioner then buys a ship off of the miner then the miner now has the isk and the missioner has the ship. If the missioner then goes into lowsec and welps it then the miner still has the isk and the missioner now has a high proportion of the mineral value of the ship in insurance payout. Inflation is countered by repair costs, skillbook costs, market fees, LP store conversions and seeded items. It's pretty high though.

You are really, really bad at thinking. You should allow others to do it for you. Lost ships are a huge isk faucet.

;_; I hadn't considered the fact that lost ships actually increase inflation by destroying objects while not destroying the associated isk. Same goes for ammunition, actually, or any money that isn't paid to CCP. Thanks for the constructive criticism though will do my best to continue learning with that help.

What he said, although I think LP store conversions may rival that. There is an awful lot of LP being generated.

You're missing the biggest isk faucet aspect: insurance

Also FW was not inflationary I'd bet, due to the sinks in conversion probably? outweighing mission isk rewards (didn't do fw myself so i can't say for sure)

No it was pretty inflationary, unless it was something else making PLEX's jump about 100m in a pretty short space of time ^^

That was one segment of the economy.

Plex were arguably underpriced before.

FW ate a LOT of isk, it did not generate much.

As Galdo said it. FW moved isk from player to player, while not generating much isk because the mission payouts are mainly LP, and LP store itself is a huge isk sink. What I think is really affecting the plex prices is the ease of afk mining now with the buffed barges. Check up on the barge every 15-20 minutes, earn 'decent' isk for next to no effort. Scales very well with additional pilots, especially if you mine ice that never depletes.

Oh of course, yeah I understand that now. I clearly need to brush up on my basic economics XD

If you do that, and take a look at the market, you should quickly understand how you can quite easily make billions with minimal effort without doing any kind of pve.....

Thanks for the indepth answer guys. I definately looked at the issue in a wrong way. I'll try and aggregate the information and develop my view further, and hopefully get a greater understanding of things.
