I said with the advent of Belly Drum he became even more widely used.
But along with Machamp he was a pretty huge Physical Sweeper in RBY.

We aren't training our pokemon professionally here... we are doing it with fun and hilarity in mind. Let's keep in that spirit.

and?
you said no fire type has ever been a staple in competitive play. In GS bellyzard was OU and charizard was still BL in RBY
interesting fact though: typhlosion and charizard have the exact same stats, just different move pools

ha, my bad. When I said that, I meant RBY, and Salac Berry wasn't available in GSC so you end up with a 50% Charizard that is open to a good Rock Slide.

Persian, Sandslash, Tauros, and Machamp are all better than Charizard as physical sweepers, because they didn't have that fatal weakness (though Machamp's psychic was a bit annoying).
Tauros can STAB Hyper Beam, Body Slam or pull off a Blizzard/Earthquake. Machamp can just be a machamp and own shit up. Persian can STAB Hyper Beam, and Slash, or Bubblebeam that Rhydon/Golem, OR Thunderbolt that Gengar for Paralysis. Sandslash can Swords Dance, Earthquake (STAB LOL), and Rock Slide your charizard. Charizard can pull off a decent Earthquake, and it just ends there.

I forgot about Sandslash. I am aware that a fairly decent amount of successful teams did thrown in Charizard as both a mixed and physical sweeper. In R/B/Y, but mostly in G/S/C

Well it's definitely NOT a staple by definition. Staple defines pokemon like Lapras, and Alakazam in RBY.

Uhh it's pokemon, why not go the traditional route. Go with pokemon yellow and pikachu!!!

We should clarify what our intentions for this round is. Do we actually want to build a tourney-level team or do we just want to crush trainers and gym leaders?
If we want the former, I don't have much input because I've really only played pokemon when I was too young to care about"tailoring my team to beat the metagame," but it seems that most people agree that charmander is not a good choice for this.
If we want the latter, I would have to go for charmander or bulbasaur (I usually get gyarados as my water type). Since this is blue version, I'm leaning toward charmander just because there is no growlithe and thus no early fire type pokemon that is decent. Charmander has ember, learns flamethrower relatively early, and completely owns the bug and grass gyms. Also, since Brock comes early (that's what she said!), I don't think he is easily beatable with charmander as long as you train a bit in the beginning. Misty can easily be beaten with a Pikachu caught in Viridian forest. Of course, it is important to keep in mind that training charmander on metapods and catching pikachu (pretty rare) is rather time consuming.

It's just for fun. We can discuss tournament stuff, but mostly this should be for fun.
So don't get angry at eachother because you guys didn't pick the best movesets, or the best teams.

then why is persian UU in everything but RYB? and why is sandslash UU in pretty much everything as well?

Yeah. People train hardcore teams of pokemon, and do ridiculous things because of hidden stats (EV's and IV's) and will breed pokemon for hours to get certain moves and the best stats.
Releasing and recatching pokemon to get the right hidden power.
And then they enter into a team where they do extreme link battles for badass prizes.
The loser is executed.

In the land of the rising sun, fierce kids and adults battle with pokemon. (now they do that on pkmn Battle revolution) Many entered, few won.

charmander is the cutest anyway...thats all that matters ^__^

Official Game Related Post, or something like that Remember, I'll be doing section 1 around midnight, so start discussing which pokemon if any should I catch?
Pidgey, Rattat, neither, both?
What levels should I train to until I go on to Viridian City?

Because machamp and tauros are just too good at what they do. In the quote, he mentioned Charizard as a good sweeper for RBY, and RBY is completely different from any other pokemon game because of it's "special" stat.
Sandslash and Persian suffer the same fate as Rhydon and Hypno. They are good, but not good enough to top the others.
Neither nor pidgey and rattata. Pidgey just sucks, and raticate is a 1 trick pony. Go get a nidoran and spearow.

6 Leers can make beating brock easy with charmander.
