Couriers.
They're great; they can bring a little bit of the fountain to you, so you don't have to go to town. The big problem is that they cost money, and you have to go to town to buy them if you didn't off the bat, which makes it questionable.
Obviously useful to have at least one person buy a courier and share with team.
Less obviously useful when the team has noobs who might get the courier killed. Also annoying and detrimental are teammates who use shared couriers when they don't need to. It takes upwards 2 minutes for a courier to go to a lane, then come back to town. This means that the teammate who used it to deliver 2 circlets and a wraith band recipe (twice in a row, sometimes - I've seen it happen) is denying his teammate the tangoes he needs to hold his lane.

As Heen said, I'm not on his team, but I'll play for the scrim.
I'm 20, and I don't see why it matters. I don't think you're saying it matters, but some people obviously do. I really don't care if another player is 5 or 50, as long as he can communicate and coordinate with the team, and not do all the shit I'm bitching about in this thread. The ones who blame shit talking on the "13-year-olds" are just as bad; they're ignoring the real issue and hiding behind age. And I'm convinced that although older players tend to talk less shit (I'm talking 30s and 40s here), "correlation does not equate to causation" applies here. Which is also something that is irritating in dota when ignored: "I did this new item build and I did good with it 2 games! Therefore, it's better than anything I used before and you r noob for saying it sucks." You've seen it before.

What's wrong is I have too much free time without access to real dota, so I instead spam you guys.
Should have said this earlier: I'm not pretending this bitching spree is a guide, or somehow otherwise useful for dota players. It's only for entertainment, mine and readers'. I guess I was kind of using it as flamebait, so we could have another discussion on dota theory, but no one's bitten so far.

I was just purely curious how old you were.
You sound very much like a teammate of mine. Have you tried playing for any leagues? Such as TIHL or IHCS. They are very skilled and have games running at all hours. You should try out if you have the time and you would have constant access to good games, granted you get to a decent rating.
Even tda's are okay to play now and then, the general tda pool has gotten much better.
I believe nobody has taken a stance against you because nothing you've said so far is outright wrong/risky enough. ^^
|
They're coming up with something similar to IHCS for Koreans I think.
I'm not sure how good the system will be, but it should be a plus at least.
As it is right now, there are plenty of players out there that have potential but are having a hard time finding good games. There are plenty of IH games which are, on average, higher level but they can really be pathetic at times, especially when it comes to picks because everyone wants to carry.
About bad heroes, a lot of it depends on your gameplan and team picks. Most people who've been following the pro scene probably noticed but a lot of heroes are starting to make appearances in high level games. Recently there was a lineup of 4 melee in an asian tourney finals: pudge bounty darkseer bristleback potm. Ranged is an inherent advantage but what roles hero play is more important +_+

I've spent a couple hours putting together a script for dota players. It sucks, but it works. It's too long to post the code here, so PM me if you want it. I can send you the source (AutoHotKey script), or the binary if you're too lazy to DL and compile it yourself (or if you trust me... I don't know whats dumber).
Feature list: Alt+. will turn on automatic saving of your replays. It will simply rename LastReplay.w3g to the current time in YYYYMMDDHHmmSS.w3g. But only if your war3 folder is in d:\program files\warcraft iii. You'll have to change the code to reflect your warcraft 3 folder if you want this to work.
Alt+c will start spamming "/refreshbnet" every two seconds. This is useful for ListChecker hosts. This will stop spamming if you tab out, or if you start typing, and restart when you finish typing or tab back in. Alt+c to stop it altogether.
Alt+` will start key remapping. It will map the key q to the key Numpad 8, which would be item slot 2 in Warcraft. Temporarily stops key remapping while you're typing.
Alt+1 will stop key remapping.
While ingame, will automatically remap the windows keys to do nothing.
The only thing here that can't be done by hand is the remapping of q to 8. I don't care if you think it's unfair. I see it as no different from programmable keyboards and mice, except that I'm doing the coding instead of using the code made by some hardware company.

i need something to change hotkeys for items. who the fuck uses numpad?? should be F1 F2 F3 F4, etc
|
I played for about 5 hours this afternoon.
Or tried to.
Rather, in 5 hours, I "played" approximately 20 games. In a span of 3 hours, remarkably, I played two games that lasted more than five minutes.
Fucking pubs.

the thing u need is a program called warkeys. it has key remapping feature and some more useful stuff for high lvl play in dota

I'm hoping bottleabuser will make a better app but for those who can't find easy programs for hotkeys:
http://blog.naver.com/sun_shine987?Redirect=Log&logNo=140045237230
download the zip file on the top right hand. unzip. run the exe.
the item slots are pretty self explanatory as to what they're representing. To assign new hotkey, click item slot --> press whatever hotkey you want it to be.
Finally left button at bottom will activate it, and you can try pressing the new hotkeys to make sure it's wroking.
1st checkbox = disable windows key during game 2nd checkbox = click town automatically when tp'ing (DOES NOT WORK FOT DOTA, this app was made for the korean dota ripoff Chaos)

I've tried it, and I don't like the one that Heen linked to because:
The key you remap from will always remap to the numpad key, even out of game and when you're trying to type.
Mine detects when you're trying to type and lets you type (I've been looking retarded saying "888" instead of "ㅂㅂㅂ" (which equates to "bbb" or back)). Maybe I'll make a GUI. Then it'll be worth giving to people.

Since BD's rambling...
Well my only REAL pet peeve in DotA is when people don't respond. I can take people objecting to my requests/suggestions, I can take people snapping back at me (like Ryugie, I'll get irritated for about a minute, but I'll get over it), but I hate it when people just ignore me, because it's a team game, like it or not, and when I'm trying to do my best it's not a fun experience when people act as if you're not there. Demoralizing and frustrating.
Anyways, I'm sure people've noticed I'm a relatively mood-swinging person. And thus, the way I feel at any given moment tends to affect how I play games. That's kind of why a lot of times I get extremely frustrated and mull around in a circle, sometimes dying, as I try to get a handle on what to do over the course of the game. A couple friends described me as an intellectual gamer, as I tend to break down the basic rules of a game, lay out a plan, and then execute the plan as the game goes, tweaking it here and there. This approach works with games I've got a good handle on (Guild Wars, various board games, etc.) but it falls apart with games I'm not as familiar with. That would be the case for DotA.
A prime example of this is last night, when I played Necrolyte, went to bottom and ran smack-dab into a Viper, with a Spiritbreaker (Ryugie) with me. Partly because of my relatively inexperience playing against Viper (I don't solo-mid often, which is where Viper is, and so I've gotten maybe three games of experience vs it, and never really without a lead stun ala CK), I was playing behind the game. But I was also gameplanning while it went. My assumption was that there was no way I could keep up with his harass with Death Pulse (especially at such low level), and there was now way I could logistically prevent him from killing me if I step away from the tower too far, in a 1v1. This is probably a fair assumption. If I'm not mistaken, his base movement speed is higher than mine, anyways, which means if he decides to push forward against me, there's very little I can do, and at best I'm going to constantly be out of experience range. This is what happened:
I've got a deck of 3 cards in front of me. Or I assumed I had three cards. Maybe I had less, I never bothered to ask, although Testie seemed to agree with my assessment of the situation. I have Death Pulse, I have Greater Bash, and I have Charge of Darkness. Thus, what I figured would happen is, I float around near the creep, denying as best I can and firing back every time he went to harass me (because running away is futile, given there's no way I can outrun him, and letting him take constant potshots is counterproductive, as it'll force *both* SB and I to have to fountain, as me running back to fountain means he has to sit back at the tower out of exp range anyways). I figured, when the Viper does that, I throw a wand strike back, and SB hits Viper. If the Viper turns around to hit the SB, that's fine, Pulse healing multiple people is more efficient than healing one person taking heavy damage anyways, and the Viper certainly cannot kite the SB while tanking an angry Necrolyte for very long. Plus, Charge = at least a 0.5 second stun, which means a few free extra hits anyways.
Of course, what actually happened was every time Viper went to harass me, Ryugie ran. Then I would, obviouly, die, as I can't Pulse myself enough and I certainly can't outrun him. A few times I even jumped out of exp range, kept running, but since he's faster, he caught me anyways. Then after I die, Ryugie jumps out, and dies too. GG.
Already frustrated by the lack of success/teamwork here (as it felt like I was dying pointlessly), I tried to figure out what to do. Should I just stack up Flasks and tank the fucker? Should I just bull forward and try to get in range so I can Pulse him while tanking thus? But of course, Ryugie being Ryugie, he starts berating me over what I perceived as a positional failure on his part. So, pissed, not wanting to double-feed Viper and not particularly wanting to deal with a raging man, I went to jungle in the other team's lane, kept dying, and was disinterested for the next 10 minutes as I randomly died for no reason other than, well, disinterest. Of course after that, as we weren't particularly losing (and I had stopped my three-death streak), we coordinated a few pushes, I farmed quickly, and rolled them easy. And I just ignored Ryugie's complaining all the while :<
My point here is two-fold. First, I'm fine with people telling me what to do. A couple days ago, I had a colossal failure laning against Viper, with Cats, as Lion, as I didn't really understand what I was supposed to do. Cats told me, I tried, I failed, he was patient, I landed a few lucky ones, end story. I'm not going to magically understand and perfect a strategy in 10 minutes, especially when it requires positioning and an intimate knowledge of attack range (Impale range vs Poison range....... beats the hell outta me, dawg, I almost never use Impale heroes and I certainly never really cared about the casting range of it until then). But snapping at me is useless and, particularly for me (and I'm sure a few others), it's counterproductive because it just frustrates us and really affects the game. I play the game for fun, for the competition, etc. but certainly not for extra stress :<
The second part has to do with the disinterest. I know more than a few people are annoyed at how 'negative' I am. A lot of this has to do with the game-planning. I hate marathons through dark tunnels without an end in sight. I'm not masochistic like that, and I'm the type who prefers to have a whole day planned out before-hand. Yes, this means I am, to an extent, a control-freak-ish type of personality. In regard to DotA, it means when I feel like the game's out of control for the purpose (winning), I feel like there is no longer really a point in playing. But this goes back to my lack of experience/knowledge. I CAN BE WRONG. I have been wrong in the past, and I will continue to be wrong for the foreseeable future. But I am also right, at least 70% of the time. As newbie as I am, I do have a general feel for gameflow.
It's why I specifically ask people if there's any chance in the game. If people say yes, I'd prefer to be able to ask how to do it (vent comes in handy), but if the how doesn't come back I'm perfectly content to try to figure it out myself. But, if no one responds in a "losing" game, I stop caring. Completely. I mean what's the point, if the game's already flowing the wrong way, and people can't be bothered to try to lay out a strategy, there's no way the game's going to change momentum, right?
I have two examples in particular where I got proven wrong, but I played my heart out because two people explained to me what the strategy was, however crude. First is the epic adfa triple quad-kill ES game that Cats and Testie won (with Luna and Jugg). About half-way through I asked, frankly, what chance we had, and Cats/Testie said if they farmed they could win it. Fine with me. I sat around in base with my 0-12 VS, watched them farm, defended, tried to stay alive, and voila. Second was where we had four gank characters (I think like, Tinker, CM, Lina and Lion or something weird like that) against Testie's Nevermore, where it felt like Nevermore was gaining momentum on farming (by which point there's little we can do against a BKB/Hood Nvm). But like, BD or someone said, we'll gank them and push, and we executed and won.
There're a few other games that didn't end so well, but I tried like hell because someone came up with a crude "if ___ farms and we don't feed" or "if we gank ___ we can counter-push" or whatnot strategy. It's that simple, it explains to four other people what the plan is, and it raises morale, at least for me. I mean even last night, there was a game that Zelniq was absolutely crushed morale-wise, where I was doing shit as Lina and Adfa was PL, and Adfa said "we can win it" so I kept trying (and failing but that's a different problem, one more along the lines of "don't play Lina ever again"). Simple! Talk! Gawd.

i just watched the replay
1. a viper in his fullest ability dominates the lane; you have to have already realized this by now (even though this viper was noob). how else do you think cats gets kills? ans: by playing viper 2. charge of darkness at such an early stage of the game is null and void because he can outrun it. you can't depend on greater bash (17%) to stop viper from raping you. 3. likewise, death pulse is useless that early because you can't spam and thus ineffective 4. my early kill was my underestimating him after watching his terrible viper control 5. i was always between you and him even while i focused on creeping, but 6. you went out of your way to attack viper 7. i'm not gonna suicide myself because of someone's idiocy
soln: stop getting so close to him, play it safe, and wait until we're higher level; it was obviously not my fault
