Unless we embark in a unreasonably dangerous area, the only immediate danger the first couple of years is dying from thirst and starvation. The first one is easilly countered by having a river nearby, and the second should be handleable somewhat through automated vermin-hunting if neccessary. We don't need a set-up underground farming complex to get the basics working. Plant gatherers, hunters and part-time brewers are plenty to keep the cogs running.

Even though our hairy little midgets won't be too happy. But that's not a problem, is it?

To an extent, but unless you embark in a super dangerous or barren area you can usually do pretty well in general.

But whats the fun of embarking in an area with no metal for weapons and few trees if we plan to make this thing last any more than few years

Well, one doesn't need access to a full steel industry on-site to have a functional fort. Galena, sphalerite and native silver works well for some solid blunt weapons, and a layer of copper will at least keep you somewhat safe against wildlife and non-elite attackers. Anything else can be imported. We don't even need iron or bituminous coal / lignite at the embark site. As long as we have access to some flux and a forest for charcoal, we can get iron through goblinite and imports, and work our way to some proper gear over time.

Plus, a shoddily armed and armored military just means more fun for all, doesn't it?

Anyhow, since the 34.01 release, Toady's been steadily been adding bugfix-patches. I'm not sure how updated addons such as stonesense, DwarfTherapist or DFhack are, so either we'll have to wait for the mods to be updated, skip the mods and go barefeeted into the wet wilds of Dwarfdom, or use an older version.

The new version bring in a lot of cool and useful stuff, and I think the most important one, dwarf therapist, is up to date so we can try the new versions. Or just go for good old 31.25

I'd think a vizualizer like stonesense and/or a graphics tileset would be nice for the yearly summaries. I imagine at least the most popular ones should be updated with the new tiles for the minecart system, but honestly, I've been far too busy with work and Crusader Kings II the last few days to check.

im playing the latest version but didnt try out the minecart either. I dont really care what version we'll use, if some people want to play with the Lazy Noob Pack we can take that. But there is also the Masterwork Pack. Its very similar to the LNP but got more features and works for the latest version of DF. Personally I didnt try it out but it looks neat

I am up for the newest version, afaik tilesets are client-sided but it's best to convert the savefile back to ASCII when uploading it, right? I'd prefer a harder embark than the usual ones (jungle untamed wilds like Boatmurdered for example or haunted forest, maybe badlands?) for more FUN, rules I have no idea and I think reporting the story should be up to the person taking the turn, but it should have pics and a map pic in the last part of it or something.
