Yeah cook from recipe is useful, you still have to cook dishes 1 at a time though, another baffling decision. Like this morning I wanted to process 50 apples into food and there's no 'cook 10' option or something similar lol. The cooking system is just.. straight from a 2000s game xd
I knew about the interaction between Ultrahand and Recall. I've cheesed a fair amount of shrines/side quests this way. Like the guy who is stuck in a hole and you have to get his cart out. You can literally move the cart in the air with ultrahand, drop it again, climb out of the hole, Recall the cart, then move it outside the crater with ultrahand. I actually quite like that, no constant faffing with the hot air balloons and fans etc.
I'm enjoying all the reddit videos of people using rockets and flamethrowers and building the craziest shit though, props to the devs for that system.

The joycons do suck but can't help it when playing handheld. I think the Switch pro controller is great. Unfortunately, it started drifting on the pc over the past year or so maybe. From trying out a bunch of fixes and searching online, it seems the problem is software. Some update must have messed up something. It isn't drifting on the Switch. I messed up my old controller and bought a new one and it has the same issue. Drift on pc, no drift on Switch.

Some more thoughts as I continue my adventure.
+ Show Spoiler +First two more small frustrations that would be so easy to fix: - when sorting items while selling to a shop, there is no 'sort by price' option - when sorting weapons, there is no 'sort by attack value' option Like really, why implement sorting at all if the most obvious filters aren't present lol.
Did the first dungeon yesterday, wind temple. It is much closer to divine beasts than to the dungeons of old, but that was expected. 5 icons on your map as soon as you enter, 5 mini puzzles to solve to get to these locations. Extremely few enemies, and a super simple boss fight. Thematically quite cool, but way too easy. I teleported out to cook some food before the fight but could've spared myself the trouble lol.
A brief stop at Lookout Landing seems to point me towards the Goron area next, but first there's more shrines and drawings to find, and the underground storyline is continuing as well so the main quest is on hold for now.
I'm encountering surprisingly few Koroks on my journey. I read that there are probably 900 or even 1000 in this game, but I've only found 13 so far, and I'm pretty sure 10 of those are the 'take me to my buddy' rewards. Might have to load up a guide of korok seeds on the greay sky platform at some point to further expand my inventory.
Also encountered my first Frost Gleeok while exploring. Decided to dodge it for now, not sure how these mobs compare to Lynels but if they're even stronger then I'm not prepared xd

Nintendo announced Zelda has sold 10 million copies during the first weekend.
Some information from Reddit for context:
This makes it the second biggest Zelda game ever in terms of lifetime sales after BoTW. In just 1 weekend.
BotW sold 390k in Japan in the full month of March '17. TotK sold 2.24m in 3 day. We are looking at 10x increase in sales over the previous entry. That makes it the second biggest lifetime sales Zelda of all time after botw.
Ten Millions copies for one console (platform) in three days is fantastic.
The last few high profile AAA games
1. Resident Evil 4 Remake - sold 3 million in its first two days multi-platform PS5/XSX/PC) 2. God of War Ragnarok - sold 5 million in its first week PS platforms only 3. Elden Ring - sold 12 million worldwide in first 18 days (PS5/XSX/PC) 4. Pokémon scarlet/violet 10 million worldwide first 3 days as well.
Yeah the possibilities are endless. I really liked a battle helicopter.
Don’t know how many things you can stick together but I’ve stick together at least 15 trees and if they hadn’t fallen form a sky island I would have sticked even more

Boy was I wrong. I'm going to be in the extreme minority, but the annoyances found in the starting sky area were enough for me to put down this game. The game is just too damn slow and open and empty; needing to backtrack for 30+ minutes at a time because the area is an enormous circle was painful. I spent hours trying to figure out how to scale up the snowy area - most people I know ended up needing to look up some stuff in the starting sky area for guidance, like how to get to that shrine or how to cook or how to do other basic things that shouldn't be confusing at all (yet the game makes it unnecessarily confusing). I decided to build a contraption connecting some floating platforms and fans/batteries, continuing to leapfrog the connected platforms up higher and higher and flying over to the snow area... and then right as I got near the snow area, where the shrine was, the game arbitrarily disappeared all my platforms, killed me, and basically said "yeah no, you're not allowed to get here using that method". What happened to rewarding - or, at least, permitting - creative problem solving? That was the final straw for me. + Show Spoiler +I'm personally against using guides in the very early stages of a game. I was apparently supposed to climb this hidden wall, which I must have run past on ten different occasions:
I don't even know how or where to place TotK on the tier list. Maybe I'll watch a bunch of people play the game online - I had been avoiding spoilers, up until now - and if it's fun to watch, maybe I'll eventually try out the game again, and maybe it could eventually earn a spot in A tier or something. Damn, I'm really pissed and disappointed, especially given how much I loved BotW. I guess my expectations were way too high.
Diablo 4 is coming out in two weeks and I wasn't sure how I was possibly going to split my limited time between these two massive games, but TotK solved the problem for me. I'm absolutely just going to stick with Diablo 4; at least I really enjoyed playing the D4 beta for several weekends already.

So, I have read others also had trouble with that shrine. I personally didn’t. If you played BotW you should already know how to cook and that the peppers give cold resistance. There is a construct that also tells you that.
I never had to backtrack 30 minutes in the starting area either… for me it was pretty straight forward get to the temple of time, then to the left to the first shrine, then follow the path of the bridge you cross to get to the river that takes you to the next shrine and then follow the path shown by the construct that gives you the battery to get to the path that goes to the snow area through some mine carts and then through a cave.
When I got to the top part of that cave and to the open area of the I did get confused cause there was no direct path to the shrine and it was on the high ground. But I just made a ramp cutting like 5 trees and got into it. Then got ascend and went to the dead tree outside the shrine and followed the path to glide back to the temple of time.
I do think the starting area is more complex than botw. Mainly because since these are sky islands and there is space between them traversing them is a little more difficult than the great plateau and you have less alternatives. But while I do think (and said in previous posts) that the starting part of the game was better in botw, I think some people over complicate things for themselves in the starting area from what I’ve seen. I swear it wasn’t at all my experience.
Since D4 isn’t coming until two weeks I’d give Zelda more time. You might end up not liking it anyway or not liking it more than botw, but I’ve been playing it and the more I play the more I like it. At first it doesn’t look like there are that many new things, it’s more botw with different abilities but as you progress more and more things appear. There is so much stuff to do, so many new mechanics that go way beyond the new abilities. There’s many new meaningful side quest, the world evolves around you the more you play. The interactions with NPC and relationships grows specially on the main town, you can even do some quest with NPCs.
I won’t say the game is without flaws. In fact I’d say that I liked the first 5 hours of botw better they felt more “tight”. But even then as I kept playing I discovered there is so much to this world that goes way beyond the expanded map and new abilities.
I’m being vague to avoid spoilers but since you liked botw so much and you have two weeks until Diablo, I would give it another try. And a suggestion. When you get off the sky island make sure to go to the quest marker and complete the quest there, from there you can do whatever you want but you won’t want to skip that first reward as it will make things much easier than otherwise.

I would also recommend to give the game another game. I am so surprised to read of your frustrations. I think you just had very bad luck.
Creative problem solving is definitely the main thing in TotK

I feel you dbp, I also got frustrated repeatedly on the great sky island.
However, the game gets a lot better once you jump down and start exploring the world, so I’d also recommend you to pick it up again and give it another shot.
And if you get stuck again, just look stuff up. I’m a dad now and my gaming time is limited, i gave it like 2 minutes before googling how to cook, and 5 minutes of trying to find the shrine before looking that up as well. And I agree, the hidden path behind the waterfall is bs
I also spent time backtracking cause i needed an axe to chop trees and make a raft, couldnt find one. The 2-3 i had collected prior had of course already shattered. Got quite frustrated trying to find another axe and then learned you can fuse any weapon with a Stone (not rock, has to be stone) to make an axe.
But again, game gets a lot more fun once you’re off that island

Thanks everyone for the feedback and suggestions

If I have a gap week in playing a game I start to forget all the stuff I just learned. That’s why I gotta play games that have pick up and go mechanics and don’t punish you for not playing constantly. It’s why I had to stop playing BoTW. The fighting mechanics get pretty complex at a certain point and you start to forget all of them when you can’t play.

Ah my problem is a bit different. I can still play every day, but only like 1-2 hours max. So I no longer have the time nor the patience to figure things out by myself if it takes too long. Don't want to spend the entire gaming session just doing 1 thing. Like yesterday I faced my first Lynel in this game, died a bunch of times naturally. After 5 deaths I just said 'fuck it, I'll be back later, time to do some shrines'. In the past I would've continued until that thing died Marked it on my map though. I'll be BACK.

I had a bad time on the starting island too, and one of the big reasons was paths to the snow shrine that were dead ends. In general this game doesn’t feel super playtested or polished, which is weird considering that’s exactly what you expect from a developer making a second game in the same game worked on the same engine with 6 years of development time. There’s been two or three shrines or puzzles that I got stuck on a wrong approach for half an hour or so because the game wasn’t communicating very well. Very frustrating for sure.
That said, I absolutely think it’s worth pushing through, with guides if necessary. This game is incredible, and I don’t just mean that as a synonym for “good.” Even when I’m not sure it’s good it’s still just taking my breath away. They’ve made some truly wild decisions with this game I really can’t believe. I *think* at the end of the day I’m still gonna think this is a great game, but either way I think I’ve gotta see it through.

I still have plenty of time to play but my memory is not what it used to be. I play my Switch next to a laptop and have notepad on the second monitor when playing pc games. I have txt files for almost all my games. Worst is something like Civ where I have marks all over that says things like move unit here or build city here.

My 2 cents regarding TotK: The biggest flaw comes from the fact that they once again used the BotW map of Hyrule (and copied many other elements of the overworld as well). I get why they did it (saves a lot of time and resources) and revisiting known places and seeing how they changed and evolved has its charm, but this comes at the cost of exploring and traveling the map. This was BotW greatest strength and a big part why it was so fun to play, and this factor is now greatly diminished. Sure, this sky islands are new and cool, but there are only so many of them, and the underground just doesn't compare either. So many places on the map just feel empty and boring or repetitive, because you already know what they look like, or because the interesting stuff even got removed (consider the top of Satori mountain as an extreme example of this). Admittely, the caves help with this, but they are not enough on their own. BotW already had the problem of being a little to empty at times and TotK suffers quite a bit from it. Which is a shame, because in almost all other aspects, TotK is a strict improvement: the basic ablilities are more interesting and more fun, the weapon and item systems are better and more rewarding, there are many good qualitiy of life changes, the shrines are better, the towers are better, the enemies are more varied and more rewarding to fight, the side quests and main quests are much more polished and greatly improved compared to BotW and, of course, the dungeons are vastly superior. It really feels that they listend to some of the biggiest criticism that people had with BotW and they managed to improve in these aspects by a significant margin. It is a very good game imo, but I feel that it misses a bit of the magic that BotW had. If they had managed to make a completly new (good) map, the game would have been almost perfect. TLDR: I really hope they make a third game in this engine that combines the strength of the BotW overworld/map and the many improvements that TotK brought
Regarding the Great Sky Island discussion in this thread: I thought it was a perfectly fine and adequate tutorial section, albeit it was not as good as the Great Plateau (and the whole set up was a bit to much like its predecessor to my liking)

I've realised why I encounter fewer Koroks/boss mobs etc in TOTK compared to BOTW. It's because I'm constantly flying towards my objective. Need to go somewhere? Locate the nearest tower and fly towards it. Label all shrines that I see from above along the way and fly to those later. I'm never travelling across the land anymore, or using a horse XD Will make an effort to go over land more often I guess.
60 shrines done, I've seen screenshots of people with a crazy amount of hearts though so I'm starting to think there's more than 120 in this one. 6 towers/regions left to discover and then I can finally resume the main quest.
I'm struggling more with the combat in this game than in BOTW. The lack of Stasis of course meanse that you can't 'cheese' Lynels or other mobs, you have to beat them proper. This in turn means that you use up a lot more shield durability. When facing my first Lynel I had only 4 shields and legit had to back off cause they all broke lol. Weapon durability is an issue for me as well. I'm using like 3-4 30+ power weapons to beat a Lynel while he drops only 1 spear. Seems like too many mobs drop shit equipment still, I'll have to beat up some more mobs to spawn blue/black versions and get better equipment.
But the main issue is how clunky it all feels. There's like a little bit of lag when trying to shield while having a bow equipped etc. Swapping weapons all has this tiny delay that just doesn't feel smooth. Bit of a problem when you face a mob that one-shots you with half of the attacks. I guess I'll have to start using more Zonai stuff like flamethrowers, beams, rockets, ...
Despite a multitude of small frustrations still loving this game though. Any free moment in the day is TOTK time. Can't stop thinking about it.
