I was just wondering if that is a common thing or if I am doing something differently.

all the games ive opted for domination or science im usually not getting big culture boosting techs or buildings and therefore have never run into the problem of having an unwanted culture victory. you must either be playing on a low enough difficulty where you can do anything and be so ahead of the opponents that it doesnt matter, or your path to your chosen victory condition is too inefficient.

Anyway it's not terribly important and disabling culture victory is an easy fix, if not the ideal one.

Personal ranking of best/worst Civs: Best: Netherlands Spain Pericles / Greece Worst: Brasil Vietnam Arabia Vietnam was by far the worst, took me forever to bring myself to go through a full game with them. It's not even that they are super weak, but the district planning is so incredibly annoying that it takes out all the fun. Somewhat similar with Brasil, plus the useless unique unit. I love building around rivers so Netherlands always felt great. All my Netherland games I became super overpowered quickly. Similar with Spain if you have an early second continent, it's kind of silly. And Pericles + Himiko is also kind of silly.

were the victory conditions the "recommended" choice for the civ you played or did you do whatever was available? (eg science/domination on a "culture" civ)

I worked with a game config of a random leader pool where I deselected all leaders which I had won with from. All victory conditions, continents, standard, Emperor. I add from Corporations, Heroes, Society, Apocalypse game modes here and there to have some variety.

theres a few things you have to get used to though, and i think how you receive this things will depend on person to person. personally i still get annoyed as hell when im less than 10 turns into the game and i find that theres horsemen coming at me because my first warrior scouted in the wrong direction. also the loyalty system making early game domination more tedious is probably a negative for players who really like domination victories.

I looked at Steam DB and these would be my recommended bundles. I wouldn't recommend base Civ 6 without the expansions, especially if you are coming from Civ 5 with its expansions. Civ 6 Platinum - $15 - includes both expansions and all DLCs except the recent New Frontier pass ones Civ 6 Anthology - $30 - includes both expansions and all DLCs including the recent New Frontier pass ones The New Frontier pass DLCs include game modes that are meant to spice up the gameplay for veterans. Many are not historical and you should probably turn off most if not all of them all if you are playing for the first time.

Why would Germans be pissed off though, I think it's great they mix in some less obvious leaders. It's kind of boring would we always get the Panzer and Uboat Germany in every Civ.

I just read up on Ludwig II a bit. Such a strange choice, even though they have him as part of the great builder pack. He's not so much a great builder but more of somebody who built a lot of stuff because he had no real job after the unification of Germany.

Up first are Abraham Lincoln (representing the United States), Queen Nzinga Mbande (Kongo), and Sultan Saladin (Arabia), all arriving as part of the diplomacy focused Great Negotiations Pack on 21st November. 2K is yet to provide launch dates for the Leader Pass' five remaining DLC releases, but all are due before the end of March 2023. Expect the second DLC - the Great Commanders Pack - to feature Tokugawa (Japan), Nader Shah (Persia), and Suleiman the Magnificent (Ottoman Empire), while pack three, Rulers of China Pack, adds Yongle, Qin Shi Huang the Unifier, and Wu Zetian. It's worth noting some additional DLC stipulations here: Nader Shah is only available to players that own the Persia & Macedon Scenario Pack, and Suleiman the Magnificent is dependent on owning Civilization 6's Gathering Storm expansion. Pack four - titled Rulers of the Sahara Pack - features Ramses (Egypt), Ptolemaic Cleopatra (Egypt), and King Sundiata Keita (Mali), and the focus switches to Great Builders for pack five, with appearances from Theodora (Byzantines), Sejong (Korea), and Ludwig II (Germany). Again, there are additional DLC requirements here: King Sundiata Keita is tied to Gathering Storm, Theodora requires the New Frontier Pass and Byzantium & Gaul Pack, and players will need the Rise & Fall expansion to make use of Sejong. Rounding out the Leader Pass' six DLC releases, presumably in March next year, is the Ruler of England Pack, featuring Elizabeth I (England), Varangian Harald Hardrada (Norway), and Victoria - Age of Steam (England). Maybe with Civ 7 approaching, I'll figure out the time to sit down with Civ 6 and really get past the UI clutter and nuisances and see how good of a game it is under the surface.
