It’s all about Skill Inheritance. I wasn’t saying Setsuna is /the best unit/ or anything, I’m just saying that off of the top of my head, I’d probably say she’s the best neutral unit right now, the only other I could see a solid argument for is Kagero. The build in specific that I was alluding to is usually called Quadsuna, and revolves around stacking speed with brave bow+ so that she attacks 4x before she can be counter attacked.
The Skill Inheritance build for Quadsuna is:
Brave Bow+/Reciprocal Aid/Moonbow/Life and Death 3/Desperation 3/Threaten Speed 3
Rec. Aid helps setup the Desperation 3. Some people prefer Luna over Moonbow, but I think Moonbow is a lot more consistently useful. Threaten Speed is the most synergistic with her own kit, but you may want something else dependant on the rest of your team. Prefer +ATK IVs and -DEF/RES. -SPD is unusable.
Well, now I'm a little bit sad I fed my Setsuna to Nowi to give her bowbreaker 3... but considering that I now beat every bow user in Arena easily, I still think it was probably worth it.
That's a neat build though if you have the 5* characters to spare for Brave Bow+. A little too much work for my taste considering there are heroes who do that much for less. But still, cool to see what you can do with the skill inheritance feature.

I don't see the draw of Tiki either, other than her being a young dragon means she offers a good stat total to your team without the drawback of slow move speed. Red Dragons seem like one of the least useful archetypes to me unless you need someone to kill Hector (weak vs sword lords with Falchion & weak vs blues which are very powerful/common already). But once they change the arena matching formula it shouldn't matter too much.
Plus you need to build your arena team around a 3 hero core where you can swap in a 4th to get the arena bonus. That or you need a flexible enough line-up where you can swap any hero out. Like in my case I have a core of Cordelia/Hinoka/Julia that can already win most arenas on their own (my Julia is a bit weak actually which is a problem, she has no SIs yet) and leaves me a 4th slot for whatever will give me bonus points.

Why do some random heroes like Robin get a cool summoning animation? You'd think they'd save that for good heroes or 5 stars?

He was a focus hero in the beginning, I think

All of the week 1 focus heroes (8 of them??) have cool animations when you draw them.

i think i've hit a brick wall in my arena runs, my dual takumi/nowi/s. chrom gets eaten up mainly by hector-based teams. i've been experimenting replacing one of the takumi's with nino but she doesn't provide enough firepower to successfully sweep hector without dying.
any ideas? i was thinking evolving my 4* tharja to 5* but she's just as glassy. i also got a roy 5* but he's just shit all round.

Btw, Cricketer, do you know how promoted class XP gain works in SoV? In Gaiden IIRC each class just has a fixed multiplier, but from FE1-3 enemies have fixed XP values and none of the complicated XP formulas modern FE has. SD/NM significantly changed XP calculations from FE1/3 and I assume SoV did the same but I haven't seen any info about SoV's XP mechanics.

I usually deal with Hector by killing everyone else on the team first (relatively easy since Hector only has 1 movement), then letting him attack Selena. Most sword users will work fine as long as you don't attack with them. Before I pulled 5* Selena I used Marth, who takes more damage and kills him slower but will still get the job done. Selena actually just blows him up and takes no damage, so she counters him outright. Anyway, once his hp is low enough you can finish him with a mage.

I have seen some dancer teams run olivia with nino, also a nino without fury or with the iv -hp or -def, get killed by hector so the solution was to give ruby sword or triadept to olivia (i havnt tested it atm as i dont run into hectors that often more thrajas and julias) but apparently she can deal with hector after u chip away at the other units. (Desparation nino also shreds a ton of units)
Nino/tharja(definition of glass cannons) have to be run in specific teams that compliment them, like nino can go with azura or olivia but tharja has to stick with azure just so ur dancer isnt screwing you on colour advantage. SI is definitely needed for them to be arena viable.

I haven't seen any actual data, but if promotions drastically decrease your xp multiplier factor I haven't really noticed. I will say that I did promote everyone as soon as I could and overall that seemed to work fine. I really don't want to deal with chapter 6 right now so I'll do another run and do some experimenting, see what I can figure out.

As with the original Gaiden, I see no real reason not to promote as soon as possible.
Gaiden was actually a really good game to increase growths for because the promotion mechanics mean even moderate variations in growths don't actually matter until you reach tier 3 classes. Promoted class bases are just so much higher than their preceding iterations that it's almost impossible to surpass them in reasonable time anyway, even with the higher growths. The growth increases seem to be primarily for grinding postgame save files and that's fine.

My core is Nowi/Ninian/YTiki, Nowi is SI'd to dumpster all red units, including Falchions, so that's a non-issue, Tiki primarily is there to deal with Hector/Julia/Nino while also being fairly tanky because of Ninian's C-buff.
Basically I have two different builds that I'm considering for Tiki, one which would specialize her a bit more to deal with those green mages better, and another that would just be a generalist build.
And yeah, I'm probably going to change my team heavily when they remove BST from the Arena scoring calculations, but until then I'm probably going to use her. saved up 50 orbs and 34k feathers so I should be fine to adapt to those changes when they come

I didn't check IVs at level 1 and now I'm in the 20s. Is there any way to know before I get to 40? Since the stat increases along the way are random but all converge at the final level I guess not?

If the hero is 4* or less you can go to the unlock potential screen and get what their level 1 stats would be at the next star level.
Otherwise sometimes you can find out mid-30s or so because you know that heroes only gain 1 of any stat per level up. So at some point before 40 certain stats will be too low to reach a certain IV level or they will be above a level.
If the hero is 5* it really doesn't matter that much in terms of time spent leveling them up, like it's good to have a nice stable of level 40 5* heroes for quests, arena bonuses, and challenge maps anyways. Worst case they have bad IVs and you use them for challenge maps.

For nino build (+spd, -hp), I went with ardent sacrifice, fury, and desperation. As long as she's in desperation range, hector just melts. The one exception was the guy who put green tomebreaker on his hector...
Actually, nino with this build seems to melt everything. Running quick riposte nowi, ninian, nino, and X has made arena an absolute joke. Curious how the matchmaking rework will change things.

is Shadows of Valentia going to have support conversations/marriages/children like Awakening and Fates?

Each character gets 2 or 3 C B A supports that are unlocked on the battle field by fighting whilst in proximity to the supporting party once support unlocked you get hit rate and crit bonuses if support is within 2-3 spaces away. No pairup, no marrige (except for story marriges) and no children.
