i also have a 48 dragonite QQ not a big deal, those are great for powering up gyms I was beating the crap out of a 195 caterpie with my 120cp snorlax earlier today what does prestige have to do with pokemon strength? sorry i dont really know what determines how much prestige a fight gains/loses
If you're training up your own faction's gym by battling against it, defeating a Pokemon who has a higher CP than yours will yield you 500 more prestige than normal, allowing you to level it up faster.

It will automatically give you +500 points even if you kill the first pokemon and run. If you manage to kill two in a row you get +1000. Also the lower cp of your pokemon compared to theirs, the larger it gets.. up to a maximum 1000 for each defeated.
Read this, it explains it better with math: https://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/gyms#allied
Edit: I'm actually not sure what happens if there's a gym with like a 10cp rattata and then a 1000 vaporean, can you use a 900 cp exeggutor to blow past the rattata and kill the vaporean, do you still get +500?

You will get +-650 prestige, +100 from Rattata and 550 from Vaporeon.

Why do people care about scyther/aerodactyl/electrabuzz/magmar? they all suck, just need one for pokedex Because they are cool and rare pokemons? If we only cared about Dragonite/Snorlax/Lapras the game would suck hard seeing as there are so few of them, especially if you are not cheating by using scanners, and the gym system is quite poorly implemented so it's not worth that much anyways.

There are scyther, electabuzz, magmar nests around if you are lucky. Aerodactyl are in the same place as Hitmonlee/chan, Lickytung. Rare pokemons without a nest.
I gave up the gyms weeks back after getting sniped too many times from spoofers. Just aimming to complete my dex now. Bloody Chansey is so rare argh

Scyther doesn't suck anyways. They shred apart Exeggutors if you get Fury Cutter + Bug Buzz and are good against Hypnos. Both which can be really useful for training gyms.

I've actually had increased success with gyms, averaging about 50 coins a day which is awesome for finally getting some rares from eggs and high IVs for pokemon I'm looking to evolve.

There were magmar nests near Paris before but it doesn't seem to be the case anymore. There is a guaranteed Elektek near Eiffel tower tho so I'll go grab one.
I find training gyms more fun because you can actually use virtually every pokémon no matter its tier or CP, whereas when attacking gyms you can often just take the pre chosen 6 pokémons, you can't really use low CP ones... Plus spoofers can be really annoying when you attack ennemy gyms and can't put many mons to defend.

Training is also frustrating because of some of its limitations though. It goes both ways really.
You have to train against the weakest pokemon so a lot of gyms are really inflexible about how you can approach & train it (Hypnos for example are pretty annoying because there's only a few strong options against them, that or someone puts like a Lapras in the bottom rung and training takes forever). Especially since being even 1 CP too high will gut the prestige you generate.
Also a good phone connection & game responsiveness are mandatory. Any sort of lag or delay make it really difficult to dodge special attacks.
Some training levels also take awhile and you still run a risk of someone sniping the spot you open up or someone else comes and start battling the gym (at which point your only option is to let them finish then take over the gym again).
I typically just go for 10/day which is a bit sad, but I don't really have the time or patience to bother taking more. I also don't strictly need anything really; I'm at like 120 in the Pokedex and the only lines I'm still missing are Tangela and Hitmonlee so while Eggs are helpful, the 5k and 10k eggs will give me something I don't need more often than not now.

Is the buddy system update a gradual rollout one? 'Cause I haven't gotten it yet.

Gradual is one thing... but rolling it out this slowly is kind of ridiculous.

I've been having problems with logging in, you guys encountered the same problem?

I only ever have problems when I'm at the edge of some sort of service (like switch from wifi to 4G as I log in).

I really thought that it was on a country-by-country basis
