doesn't have to be the exact same ATB system they used 21 years ago

lots of great RPGs are still turn based combat

whether it's FFXV style or kingdom hearts/dissidia style... didn't like either of them and won't play a game that uses those combat system styles

I don't think there are a lot of super successful turn based RPGs, is the issue. Most of them struggle to put up numbers Final Fantasy did 20+ years ago, let alone be actual blockbluster hits, which is what FF wants. Action oriented RPGs outsell turn based by an insane ratio.

I think thats why Square has delegated turn based stuff to Dragon Quest + low budget IPs.

But when did we last have a turn based RPG with graphics of FF15?

turn based rpgs dont sell because their graphics are not for the mass market

Persona 5 is turnbased and hit 2.2 million in two years, FF15 hit 7.7 million. P5's graphics are very good but not in the same way (less realistic), and Square clearly has a huge marketing budget that Atlus can't match. DQ11 has sold 3 million copies so far.

Turn based RPGs don't sell because they're niche. Niche games don't have the luxury for those amazing graphics. That's why most of them like died during the PS3 era, it was way too expensive to make them for the ps3, so handhelds got all of them.

What I want to say is that if a big FF title would turn out to be turn based I seriously doubt it would sell less just because of its combat system.

I think it would sell well, but it would polarize a lot of the main stream audience. Like if you worked at a Gamestop, and you were talking RPGs, you'd probably convince more randoms to buy it if its "action-based" or "action-packed" versus , "return to its roots" "classic turn based", if that makes sense.

And I think the numbers support this. Action RPGs have grown and grown in sales whereas turn based ones? Stagnant to say the least. That's why Square has made strides to make their games way more action focused since XI-XII.

Edit: But I digress, I think the story and characters is what sells an FF game. Combat, not so much. if combat mattered, I think the fanbase would be begging for a brand new game that copies FF7's combat altogether rather than a remake of VII.

Deleted tweet, but Variety is reporting that Sony is skipping E3, first time in 23 years.

Yep, this pretty much confirms either E3 is doomed. Going the way of the Dodo sadly. They never should have barred gamers from the event.

FF7R is on the PS5 and Pro with the PS5 either late 2019 for release in 2020 in Summer.

Still don't think it'll arrive until '21, but I agree they should skip E3. I've also heard talk about them spinning PS out from Sony as well. Will be an interesting next couple of years for PS.

Merry New year! Hopefully, hopefully this is the year we get some new info. KH3 is out this month and maybe, just maybe it is time for FF VII to get some limelight.

A game that took too long and was actually amazing? (I don't know...most games fall within the 3-4 year dev cycle.)

Diablo III
Team Fortress 2
StarCraft II
Shenmue

Are probably good examples with long development times.

There was this little game called The Witcher 3, too...

The problem is that Squeenix are terrible at action RPGs. XV's the closest they've come to having an actual good combat system since they started down this road. On the other hand they're really good at turn based. Octopath Traveller did really well, significantly above expectation.

Random battles need to go, but turn based battles are fine. It's just for some reason people arbitrarily decided they were old.

It's like the industry deciding that single player games are done and nobody wants them.

What people don't want are shit combat systems. A good turn based combat system is vastly preferable to a bad action based combat system, and this attempt to appeal to an audience they don't even have has driven the franchise halfway into the ground.
I'm not bad at Starcraft; I just think winning's rude.

Cloud and his big sword look so silly in the video clips. It worked in the anime style of the original but not like this. Kind of weird because ff8 had giant sword wielding protagonist who was more realistic looking yet it looked awesome. Think if I'm gonna spend time replaying ff7 I'd much rather go back to the original than what I saw in the video.

Tomorrow is the 31st; the anniversary of VII's release date. KH3 is out so no more of that pre-release news in that area. Maybe we'll get a tease if the gaming gods have any compassion.

http://www.hd.square-enix.com/eng/news/pdf/19q3Outline.pdf

Square Enix just posted their investor briefing. They are set to make announcements before E3. They are also expecting to earn around 40-50 billion yen in Q3 of this year. That is around $400 million dollars. So either is is more KH add-ons, Lara Croft. Most likely it is the Avengers game they have been working on.

But... It could be you know what.

here's a question, im throwing it in this thread because i dont know where else to put it

have any rpgs came out for PC that are turn based, but not "position" or "grid based", in the last few years? Preferably something with diversity in how you build your characters/party

You know... like ff7
Played Dragon Quest 11 a bit but it felt just way too generic and lackluster, but maybe i am impatient
