here's a question, im throwing it in this thread because i dont know where else to put it

have any rpgs came out for PC that are turn based, but not "position" or "grid based", in the last few years? Preferably something with diversity in how you build your characters/party

You know... like ff7
Played Dragon Quest 11 a bit but it felt just way too generic and lackluster, but maybe i am impatient

Really depends on what you're looking for in everything else about the game, because there's a shit-ton of turn-based RPGs on Steam (especially if you're willing to delve into indie games and even RPGMaker games...).

If you're looking for the usual JRPG experience, I'm pretty sure Lost Sphear and I Am Setsuna got Steam releases. Persona might've been console exclusive, can't remember. Tales series is constantly chugging out games, though their battle system strays into actiony/positional (but still entirely ATB).
Average means I'm better than half of you.

I've played a couple of the tales games, the combat isn't really what I am looking for. I played a Persona game that I liked a long time ago, didn't know that series was still going.

The most important factor for me other than a simple turned base combat is being able to create diverse/unique party and/or character "builds".

Looking at Lost Sphear, the images look a bit like chrono trigger. It's not a grid based game right? It looks pretty.
I am Setsuna looks cool and I am definitely going to check it out. Thanks

Legend of heroes - Trails in the Sky is an amazing series (and on steam). It's very reminiscent of old FF games, and considered one of the best JRPGs out there. Trails of Cold Steel is alright too, but not as good as the first series imo (it does have updated gfx tho).

Also Steam has most of the FF games at this point so you can always revisit those for some nostalgia. Should note the steam ports have issues, but those are fixed with some good mods.

A lot of the atelier series is on steam now, even if some of the ports aren't great (Atelier Sophie is a legitimately great port and pretty good game, even if its direct sequels are iffier). It's a turnbased jrpg series with generally simple combat mechanics, but very complex crafting systems. The stories tend towards being simple slice of life stories, though, so they're more character based than traditional jrpgs, and the earlier/most recently ported (remastered) DX entries have time management as a large component. Not my favorite JRPG series, but it is the one that most recently came to steam (Atelier 11-19 are on it now, with 20 coming out soon).

The trails series is a combination of the generic turn-based and tactical grid-based, leaning far more towards the turn-based, but it is a bit deceptive at first in not seeming like it (especially if you start with Trails in the Sky, as the combat feels very slow with only two characters). I'd say it's my favorite jrpg series that's got actual PC releases, though the combat is a little different.

Idea factory has their games on steam, though I think they're subpar at game design (Fairy Fencer F is alright, but I dislike the Neptunia series).

Persona 5 is great, but unless you want to emulate it, is ps3/ps4 only (though yes, it is playable on PC). Atlus ported a game to steam recently, so it will likely eventually come, but it's almost certainly years away.

I'm pretty sure the "grid-based" thing you're talking about is SRPGs/tactical rpgs, like Fire Emblem or Disgaea, right?

Most pc turn based combat games have movement (thus positioning) as part of them. Pillars of Eternity 2 (havn't tried its turn based mode, only its real time with pause). Divinity Original Sin 1/2 and so on are great turn based games but use movement as part of the combat. They aren't grid based but a lot of other ones are.

Most tend to go full real time or semi turn based though. Semi with long cool downs on abilities and sometimes a global clock so you can't rotate spells or movements combined due to needing to stand still to channel and other movement stopping mechanics.

dragon quest 3 is probably my favorite game of all time
but it's also a game that I played when I was a little kid, so that gives it an unfair advantage

Well there was an event held for retailers in Scottsdale by Square, Activision, & Konami. Everyone that went signed an NDA but they did get some swag...

Up in the air if FFVII Remake was shown. But Square did show something. We just don't know what.

Best PC game with turn-based combat is Disciples 2, period.

Nearly had a heart attack when the notification popped up, but alas... Kind of odd they put this out and not on the anniversary of the release.
