Got an avenger defense mission. First turn in, I double moved my phantom fully towards the beacon thingy to scout it out. On the alien turn, their movement discovered her triggering two pods of troops, one of which had a berserker, and removing her concealment. With a flashbang grenade and a mimic, I somehow avoided all damage even with a sectoid and MEC reinforcement triggering one turn later.

I was somehow perfect throughout the entire mission until the second to last turn. I ran back one of my last remaining troops behind a tree in full cover. A stun lancer who reinforced on the opposite side of the map got a lucky shot through full cover and gravely wounded her. At least it wasn't a crit...

On swords vs shotguns: the way I see it, the two fill very different roles.

Earlygame, swords are intended to be run and gun before you hit lieutenant. Sometimes you have an especially annoying enemy in high cover. That's when slash starts to look a lot more attractive. It still carries a fair amount of risk because of potential activations, but it definitely has its niche.

In the midgame, shotguns are better general use weapons. If run and gun comes into play, it seems like there's no real incentive to use the sword. Damage-wise, the sword really suffers because of lack of mods.

In the endgame, the sword needs to be built around reaper and possibly untouchable to be relevant. It plays the same role as a sniper with serial - cleanup.

Uggh screwed over my campaign by not stopping the Avatar project. Now I have a timer counting down without the next black site being revealed. The game doesn't let you mess around and not do main missions like Xcom EU did.

Psionics are so much fun and it's cool that you get to keep training at them for a long time. Downside is, you can really only effectively have 2 psionic troops that keep on training.

I thought the same happened to me, but then I got a site with -4 reduction on the countdown. Can't imagine losing now, despite doing whatever I wanted until the 20 days started to count down.

I think that the Blacksite mission can only happen once. However the aliens can construct multiple facilities that you can raid. Destroying facilities pushes back the Avatar progress

Also I read some article by Beaglerush where he mentioned that once you fill up your Avatar meter progress and are now into the timer, doing anything that would reduce the progress of the meter resets the timer instead.

So I haywire controlled a sectopod, then killed all the remaining aliens in the mission and it ended while the sectopod was still there. Apparently coz it was on my team temporarily, I didn't get to kill it


oh reddit tells me holding control while moving your troops lets you setup waypoints so you don't path through dumb areas! TIL.

So apparently its a bad idea to slash a muton. Would have liked to know that before i lost my high ranking ranger but I guess thats just XCOM.

no you have plenty of time to do everything else. just keep an eye on the avatar bar and stop the dark events that increases it.
i am on my second playthrough and i havent touched a story mission apart from the first one until i got t3 weapons and armor.

I didn't do any story missions before the bar filled up. At the minimum, you get 20 days for free (don't know how to calculate the "delay" though).

yeah... the point is to kinda do the alien bases before the meter fills up.

You don't have to do them asap, a base contributes progress but when it is destroyed the entire progress from that facility is removed (you can see little red squares under the base)

The biggest thing imo is to make sure you can access the base when you need it (region unlocked) and then you can leave it around for a while, once your bar starts getting a little high you clean up the base and repeat the process.
Several story missions also reduce progress so do some of those to further reduce the bar when needed.

Letting the bar actually fill puts you on a way way shorter timer to get things done then just controlling it.

Ok now I am annoyed... beat the game on Commander, end screen even says 0 soldiers lost (yes there was a lot of save scumming) but didn't get the 0 death achievement...

ooooh, i didnt know the progress gets removed when you kill the sites, i thought i had to kill them asap to slow the progress!


Also i laughed so hard, enemy has reinforcement on a roof, i use all my explosives, building collapses, they fall to their death....BUT i counted a previous dead enemy as body and 1 guy snuck away without me realizin...all my guys are without cover and then i realize my big mistake when the enemy has his turn and what does he do`?

runs straight into my samurai ranger sploooosh






and also wtf, i equip armor with 4 bonus HP, my soldier gets hot for 3 dmg and is wounded pfffffff

Yep, armor hp is no longer ablative like it was in Xcom 1.
Its the reason why people have so many more wounded this time.

Is it worth playing the old game (Xcom enemy unknown 2012) that is on steam sale atm? Or would you advice for me to start directly with Xcom2 ?

The campaign of Xcom enemy unknown is worth it story wise and does it have fun and challenging gameplay?
