Edit: Also, if you need tips, there's a lot of decent stuff out there. I'm a fan of HeirofCarthage myself... long term TW player who's pretty good at explaining what he's doing so you can see thought process of someone who kinda gets it.

Game has a lot of counters so you get crushed until you are able to get good at building to counter likely enemy compositions (and ideally have flexibility if they do something strange). I'm also watching HoC's videos. Other good players would include LegendOfTotalWar and ThePrussianPrince.

The DLC prices truly are laughable though. Like what the fuck level.

Also is it linked to steam? Basically, you pay 12$, get the one game, then get a few more games at the start of the next month (You have no idea which these "few more games" are). You can keep all of them, no matter what else happens. At this point, you can either keep subscribing and get the next months games, or stop subscribing, keep what you already have, and not get any new ones. It is like a half-mystery box of games every month.

Its hard to find for me. https://www.youtube.com/user/HeirofCarthage Heir of Carthage is not super great himself, but he does videos of higher level players and other folks. He isn’t a bad place to get started and find other streamers. Because of the way armies can match up due to build, you see a lot of higher level players doing themed fights. It just lets them to more interesting things than fight on a flat plain.

Click on new campaign, first thing that pops up is a window with three campaigns, only one of which i can play without paying. Click on that one, another window where half of the factions are locked behind a paywall. Good job making a paying customer feel fucked over. I bought your game, i want to play it, not buy more shit. I am already annoyed before i even start the game, and feel like i should better just have pirated it instead of buying. I am fine with games having DLC, just don't shove them in my face in the part of the game that i have bought. Place them tastefully outside of the game, and add the menus once i actually buy that shit, instead of making me feel like i just paid for the opportunity to give you more money.

Though if you just got the game the five (or 6?) free campaigns are all excellent and will keep you busy for a good long time. Like everyone, I recommend Dwarfs to get used to the game. Empire campaign gets cooler with each new content addition... it's challenging as hell but a great experience if you want to feel like you're the bulwark of civilization, surrounded on all sides. Vampires are great if you're into magic... their non-hero/monster units are kinda dull. Greenskins are hilarious; though the strategic side is very similar to Dwarves (nearly the same start position), they have a polar opposite playstyle. In terms of paid DLC Wood Elves is where it's at. They're a very fun faction. Beastmen are a take or leave, depending on how much you're into being a guerrilla terrorist goat-man. The Karak8Peaks DLC is cool as a really different strategic experience, though it doesn't change the tactical experience much. The free updates are great too... Bretonnia is awesome, and the various new heroes and start positions are great. There's also a really vibrant mod community.

But if I want to actually learn about the mechanics, and get a general understanding of how it works where do I go? Beyond "play dwarves" I don't really know what to do.

Reminds me of the way DLC was pushed in Dragon Age: Origins. I make a habit of pirating games like this.
