Browsing through a few gameplay videos so far it looks a lot like Call of Duty. I wonder what the movement and such is like - does it use a proprietary game engine?
The whole aspect of heroes that you can change during the game to counter the opponents team composition which add a lot of strategic depth to the game. I think this game follows all of the solid design-principles one can think of. I definitely think this game can be really succesful (as in next big thing).

The issue with an Esports FPS is imo not the 'skill' needed for a game. the #1 thing is watchability. If a game is fun to watch, if interesting things happen that (almost) anyone can understand it can become a successful esport.
The problem with a lot of FPS games is that this audience fun is missing.

ill be the first to say that COD's format of Headquarters/w/e they play is hella confusing compared to the structured play that is CSGO, but maybe that is because I don't play COD and I do play CSGO. CSGO is slower and therefore feels easier to follow. if Overwatch is as fast paced as in the videos, with multiple characters it could become quite hard to spectate.

COD should just play Hardcore Search and Destroy. It's basically counter-strike with faster movement and less aiming.

Wow, more views than Leagues in twitch...it has done what Heroes could not do forever in just one day lol

Yeah, I agree with Kipsate. CS:GO feels super intense to watch. And I think that's super easy for your average viewer to understand.
I think Overwatch has more of a frantic action as opposed to slow and deliberate, both which have appeal

Your right, but what you need to remember here is that you only look at the viewer/player-rating. And that's only one part of the "succesful esport equation" (the other one is the playerbase).
From my experience, the viewer-to-player ratio is not as volatile as alot of people think. Yes, CS:GO gets a ton of viewers but it also has the largest playerbase in the west (or at least it's very close to LOL).
As an example, MOBA's still have tons of viewers even though they can be quite confusing to watch.
What also matters is that there is a proper esport-structure where we don't see a new tournament every week. Rather Blizzard needs to take action and set up an infastructure so viewers get interested in watching their teams play for the story.
Hence unless the viewing experience is absolutely awfull, I think the most important factor - by far - is whether the game will have a lot of players playing it. And that is determined by
1. Accessibility (F2P and low learning curve) 2. Whether core gameplay is fun) 3. Skill-cap (does it feel rewarding to further improve your skillset?)
I think Overwatch looks like an incredibly fun game, and - from what I gathered - the feedback from alpha testers have been really postive as well
Hence my prediction is that the game likely will have a really large playerbase which will battle that of CS:GO/DOTA (other super popular games).

Is this just the beta or is this intended?

At release Day allmost every game can hit high.
And Blizzards "Betas" are more "get streamers and community figures on board" and let the hype train get off the board. People like to watch what they cant have themselfs and its a genious marketing strategy to even call it Beta. How large will be the numbers, when the Beta is open? The same as Starcrafts streamer numbers? The same as Heroes numbers? That will be important

Anyway about Overwatch.. one thing i really like so far is the "best play" sequence at the end of each match, really nice idea.

I have a Primeval Warrior badge. Which is to say I played TF2 from Day 1 onwards having preordered and played a little beta. Virtually everyone I played with from back then no longer plays, largely because of the absurd drop system dropping game-effecting items. None of us asked for that nonsense and the argument of "they're sidegrades!" is laughable. Its an inherently imbalanced system in what was once a remarkably well-balanced and thoughtfully designed game.
Its been great for Valve because it means they were able to make TF2 free to play and start raking in the money from microtransactions; but it left a lot of people who paid for the game as it was completely in the cold, because its completely changed.
Anyway...still twiddling thumbs hoping for beta invite. If they're really not giving out EU ones until this evening I guess I'll go kill some time with something else for a bit whilst I wait and see.
|
EU is live now but invite waves are probably still happening. I'll hold out until tomorrow morning and cry myself into a corner if I don't have it by then.
|
My facebook is blowing up with people and their beta invites and all I can do is sit on the sidelines in jealousy ;_;

The numbers are more like how Hearthstone was than other Blizzard games, right now it has close to 200k people watching.
If on the long run this game can keep numbers close to what HS achieved I think it can be called a success.

I think its going to be vastly more popular then HOTS because OW was hyped and marketed a lot better then HOTS and it feels a lot more new and fresh compared to HOTS which was basically a Dota/LoL clone with an atrocious engine. Yes it does give a TF2 feel but not everyone has played TF2 whereas most people have played LoL/Dota before playing HOTS.

Also the "games like TF2" market is totally vacant at this point for a AAA publisher standpoint.

I don't know how you could call Heroes a Dota/Lol clone.
But anyway, I'm 100% sure overwatch will be more succesful than heroes because there is no game competing with it, and it looks fun and was hyped by being the first new Blizzard Franchise in like 19 years.
Has the buisness model been announced yet?

Yeh I think the idea tha this may end up like HOTS is 0%! I can't remember a single person looking at HOTS and saying "WOW I really wanna play that game, that looks awesome - can't wait till I get my beta key". On the other hand, it's exactly the opposite for Overwatch. Everyone and their mother wants to try it out.
On top of that, the game also comes at the right time since there is no other real fast-paced FPS teamgame that has a strong position on the market. That's also different from Heroes which is a closer competittor to Dota/LOL than what OW is to CS.

No business model has been announced yet.
We know that skins are going to involved at some point with character progression. So take from that what you will.

Is this the same as the lotv beta where you go to the battlenet launcher and find it there? Or do you have to go through the website to see if you have a key
