Hence, Overwatch looks to play like a Team Fortress game with modern graphics and many more classes, and lots of those classes relate to other games. Soldier 76, the generic FPS guy. Pharah, Tribes style projectiles+air combat. Junkrat, the Demoman. Like any of the melee combat FPS games? There are melee people too! And, of course, you toss Blizzard making cool characters and a spiffy art style on top of that gameplay. Want to play a cowboy? A ninja? A turret? Of course it is a hyped game. Also: f5

Still a chance, just saying. I'd wait until tomorrow before being sure whether or not.

It's way less stressful and it's more fun to cooperate strategically than 1v1 refined skill. And a game's scene can't grow if it doesnt reach some sort of popularity. I'm looking at Quake Live's 1k 24-hour peak and 300 current peak. I wouldn't want to touch that market, either. That's doomed to failure. Its a team game, not 1v1, its a 5v5 team game. when are EU invites, are there even EU invites help.

To say nothing of the total lack of self-control Valve has had with adding cosmetics in TF2. Compare and contrast with the rather more restrained way they've added DOTA2 cosmetics, being careful to typically try to stick with hero-specific styles. And they're pure cosmetics, not game-influencing items. Hmm, I don't agree that the 'unlock' weapons have been bad for the game, I think they have generally been well thought-through and interesting variations to their stock counterparts while serving specific and useful purposes (some of them, like the PHLOG though, can be very overpowered vs low level opponents). Cosmetics have gone overboard though, but this will happen in Dota 2 eventually as well as reasonable ideas run out and the need becomes greater for more and more attention-grabbing items. We're already seeing signs of it with some of the Arcanas and Immortals (e.g Gyro's 50's spaceship). It's just inevitable with this free-to-play model. --- What annoys me with Overwatch is that people are, yet again, talking about it being not only an e-sports game but the "next big thing" for the FPS genre before it's even released (how many times haven't we heard this nonsense before). Browsing through a few gameplay videos so far it looks a lot like Call of Duty. I wonder what the movement and such is like - does it use a proprietary game engine?

It most likely is the next big thing in the FPS genre. What does the FPS genre on PC have to look forward to? Not much. It has Blizzard's name behind it, and their reputation is behind the game, it has some interesting properties to it, that's where all the hype is. It' uses a proprietary game engine that I don't think has a name.

Since they are totally subjective and have no defined consensus on what everyone would accept, they are impossible to meet. Thus is the problem with any discussion on the topic, no one knows what the fuck anyone is talking about. Just like when people throw around phrases like "Skill based FPS" like that is a real thing.

How is ""the next Esport FPS" subjective? That would not take much at all. Quake died out ages ago. Anything can be a successor.

Maybe this skill based FPS will become a thing, when Valve makes one. TF 3 or Half Life 3 Death Match (HL 3 confirmed). Till then, I dont see that getting thing.

So are CoD and Halo. Though some folks will argue tooth and nail against those last two. Which only furthers my point that its a pretty useless term that people throw around, but don't really agree on. Like "Skill based FPS".

How would you define a Quake successor, a successor thats that exact game style or the successor as the premier FPS title? The latter has been done over and over.
