both the games AND how much downtime is involved. the time between games can kill a lot of the hype.

A lot of FGC majors are pretty hype. Nowhere near this, but then no one else can gather thousands of competitors.

Generations are a period of time based on culture events. Time much bigger than the 4 years. Would you prefer I use the term Generation Z instead? It's the same thing really. Generation Z was at most around 5 in 2001, so no, it's not the correct term either.

I don't remember JoinDota ever releasing a number anyway according to valve TI2 had 567k http://blog.dota2.com/2012/09/the-2012-international/ I remember seeing the number myself in a player. It was the first Dota 2 tournament, the official unveiling of the game and had a massive prize pool. Are you talking about TI1? Iirc the opening rounds did have 1.5 million+ watching. The opening rounds definitely did not have 1.5 million concurrent watching.
That was across all languages. English only had 300k iirc. Vaguely I found this old post: https://www.facebook.com/joinDOTA/posts/247700551931398 but it was a hot topic back then since people were comparing numbers to LoL (because they never not compare).

135k viewers watched Smash. Something tells me AE and Marvel can't top that but Smash has tons of history. It's like if a big OGN Broodwar tourney came back with every single legend in their prime. It's just that one moment in a trillion.

If the new Smash is a good competitive game, it will be purely by accident given Nintendo's stance. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they purposely try to "sabotage" it as a competitive game.

nintendo almost didnt even give permission for this game to be streamed. shows u how much they really care about the community that supports their game

That was so entertaining! What's the community site for SSBM? Does it have a TL.net equivalent? Watching Armada play Peach was so cool.

When we talk about in-game downtime it's absolutely no contest.

don't know how likely it is that a mod will be played at an official event, tho.

The foundations of your argument is faulty.
There is no generational difference between the SSF/MvC3 competitors and the SSBM ones.

Hopefully, HOPEFULLY, numbers like the ones that just showed up to watch Melee can convince them otherwise.
If not? They accidentally got it right with Melee, perhaps that title will just be immortal.

It's probably the most dynamic esport title
i'm not sure of the history but i think quake live was what killed it, unfortunately. theres some great videos out there where a pro (i think rapha?) talks through a replay of entire match and explains his decision making process. really great insight into map control, timing the buffs, and reading the opponent.

TBH the competitive community represents less than 1% of the people buying SSB

Thy gave in like 4 hours later. It seems like it was a knee jerk reaction to not stream it, but better heads prevailed.
