Honestly, it's more comparable to a Shootmania (or something) player looking at the guys surrounding him, thinking his game is much bigger than it is, and claiming that they should be spoken of in the same breath as Quake without knowing the history of Quake.
Even with the game being as old as it is, it's competitive history is tiny compared to the 'the traditional fighting game community'. It's your classic strong headed young guy trying to get respect from the old guard and flailing about when they don't want to freely give it.
Smash Bros has the advantage of having the young youtube generation behind it though. Read into that however you will.

I am sure if sc2 had only 1 huge tournament a year with every top player is playing we would see some epic numbers.Sc2 tournaments are too over saturated for viewers. Think like this.IF you had to see mvp play one time a year you would %100 watch it.But nowadays you can see top players playing against eachother too often which kills the hype.
